Now that fur is back in vogue, I've been thinking about splurging on a coat this winter. I'm not too keen on the idea of a real fur, but isn't fake...

I know there’s a lot of debate on the sustainability of real vs. faux fur, so I was looking for an in-depth analysis to figure out the answer. No offense but a lot of articles and studies about real and faux fur are funded by fur commissions and animal rights orgs so they’re not really reliable. Also people on Tumblr have this weird habit of comparing one entire industry of the thing they don’t like, to one single item of the thing they do like, which is nonsense.

However, I trust Slate to look at the issue and do good, researched, mathematical analysis, so here’s their take. If anyone can find an answer to sustainability questions, it’s the Green Lantern at Slate. For more detail, I found this Refinery29 article that’s also really good.

So which is better for the environment, real or faux fur? The conclusion of both: it depends, and also there is not enough information to fully determine which is worse per coat. Sorry, I know this answer is boring and won’t get reblogs, but for those of you to catch it here: there is no strong evidence of either argument.
