In defense of Wanda (and a debunking of the idiotic Mary Sue article that has gotten so many people bitching about something they never really read)

Every time people rely on a certain badly / deliberately out-of-context Mary Sue article to tell me Wanda from Sandman is problematic I have to wonder…

1. You are NOT supposed to agree with the transphobic characters. Do they not realize Thessaly is a TERF (And two thousand-year-old homicidal witch)? George is literally a Nightmare-monster, and Wanda’s parents were religious hicks. (those are the Transphobic characters.) Those sort of people (except maybe George) still exist in the real world.

2. Wanda was the only Trans character EVER depicted where you literally see their soul was always a woman. For many people that was a big deal.

Notice how you never see what’s under the dress. (That’s not our business.) The visual of her soul is not saying that she wasn’t a woman in life. But she is in the pretty, frilly dress she always wanted but couldn’t afford and had anxiety about buying. And she has the delicate features she always wanted but was too scared to get surgery to change.

3. Why do they blame Neil on how Wanda was drawn?! Neil was NOT the illustrator. Also it’s kind of disheartening that people would be angry that a woman is “too masculine looking” and “Too tall and the features are too manly.” And worse, there are those angry because Wanda didn’t medically transition (Not your business, bitches. She’s a woman). Some, right here on Tumblr, have argued that Wanda was “A man in a dress.” The moment you say something like that, I start to lose respect for your claim that you honestly believe the depiction is Transphobic. Because the moment you call a Trans woman a man in a dress (even a fiction one) just because she’s a little tall and has indelicate features, your argument becomes invalid. Not everyone is physically feminine. Wanda wanted delicate features but was afraid of surgery. Lots of cis women struggle with that too.

4. Wanda helped a lot of real people, including a transman friend of mine who cried because he saw Wanda go through exactly what he went through with his own parents and he no longer felt so alone. 5. Yes, Wanda dies. Guess what? LOTS of characters die in Sandman. The main character dies in Sandman. Children die in Sandman. An entire diner full of people die in Sandman. About 75% of all characters in Sandman die. At least Wanda died nobly saving someone else. You don’t get many heroic deaths in Sandman. Most of the human characters aren’t that nice.

6. Ever hear of Caitlin R. Kiernan? Author and transwoman. Novelist and comic book writer. Guess who took over writing The Sandman continuity when Neil Gaiman left it in the mid-90s? She wrote the first version of The Dreaming and The House of Mystery Volume 2. She wrote The Sandman presents comics for several years.

That’s right, he left his most well-known franchise in the hands of a trans author.

But yeah, sure, he’s transphobic…
