So is it ok to be gay/lesbian/bi/etc, and Christian? Does the bible say it is a sin?
Sins are acts that separate us from God and keep us from loving our neighbors as ourselves. Being gay is not a sin. Bullying is a sin. Being hateful to other people is a sin. Putting yourself in the place of God to judge others is a sin. Being gay is not. [x]
My brother is a serious Christian. He carries a cross around his neck and has about 50 different bibles. He also believes in science and put his effort into proving to himself that the bible was true. He found solid evidence that a man named Jesus (with a carpenter father) did exist and do good. Now, since I came out as gay, he has still supported me 100%. I put the question to him, “if the bible says gays are wrong, why don’t you mind me?” He shook his head. “The Old Testament said something like that. Let me explain. At first, God believed humans could do everything he wanted so he set all these strict, and frankly impossible, laws and rules that we had to abide by. Well, that didn’t go mighty well. When God realised that human beings were naturally sinful creatures, he accepted that those commandments would not be easy for them to follow. So, he sent his son as the sacrifice for all the things that humans had done that God had previously said weren’t allowed. From then on, whenever a human broke one of his old rules, they were forgiven. God had given his son to bear the weight of the human sin. Jesus was sacrificed so you don’t have to follow the Old Testament anymore. So you’re allowed to be gay! Jesus never said being gay was wrong. He specifically said to love and care about everyone.” So dear Christians, if the biggest and most helpful and benevolent thing to take from the bible is Love Thy Neighbour, then why on earth do you think you’re an exception? By “following God’s rules” and treating good peaceful innocent humans with no respect or kindness, then you’re not doing a very good job.

As a closeted member of the lgbtq+ community, my first thought is: how many of those people died in the closet. Their family found out through a body bag delivered at their door. I can't let that happen. I am coming out for all of those people who never got to, in Orlando and in every other area of the world where lgbtq+ people feel that they cannot come out.
The day after Kalamazoo Pride, we mourn the deaths of 50 lgbtq+ brothers and sisters. I never want to hear again that lgbtq+ people in public bathrooms are a problem.
We have done this together and together we can undo this. If you haven’t before, take the time today:

I recently told my deeply religious father that one of his favorite actors is gay. To that he said, "I could've done without that information." That made me sad and reminded me of the old military policy of "don't ask, don't tell"

Language is powerful, and even those of us who don’t choose the bisexual label have a responsibility to ensure that the world is safe for those who do. One way to accomplish that goal is to practice saying the word ‘bisexual’. Say it again, ‘bisexual.’ Paint it on the walls; wear it on a t-shirt. Write it on toothpaste on your bathroom mirror; notice it as you stare at your beautiful self. Bisexual. Say it louder; say it in public; say it to someone who might not be comfortable hearing it. Let them begin to get over their discomfort. Begin to get over your own. Ask yourself: what is it about that word that is so frightening to people? How can we lower the fear content, undo the negative associations, create new meaning, open possibilities?
