“Kids in 2000 will still be listening to The Beatles.”
— Brian Epstein, 1964 (via suelennon)
I was thinking today that In My Life is not just a John song for Paul, it is McLennon Proof
I think some people think, Okay, maybe John had a crush on Paul, but because of Paul’s “immovable heterosexuality,” he never acted on it. Never told Paul about it. Just suffered in silence. BUT then we have “In My Life,” which is NOT John suffering in silence, is it? No no no, it is John being quite loud and clear. In My Life is an ANSWER to a QUESTION that someone has asked him, and that question is: “Who do you love more? Who is more important to you?” And John ANSWERS that question with the most beautiful, profound, powerful lyrics. He answers it with a resounding “YOU it is YOU I love YOU MORE I love you MOST of all, the most of ANYONE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE.” It is meant to be the kind of answer that is completely unequivocal. It leaves no doubt.
Now, who asked him that question? Why, of course, it was the Paul that hardly anyone ever gets to see. Insecure!Paul. Needy!Paul. The Paul who doubted John’s love. The Paul who desperately wanted reassurance. Probably only John, and Linda, ever saw that Paul. But we, his fans, know that Paul from listening to his music. Scared!Paul never, ever comes out in interviews, never. But he writes and plays and sings these beautiful songs and so we know that Paul quite well, actually.
And what was making Paul insecure in 1965 in his relationship with John? I’m betting on a BIG FIGHT happening about Stu Sutcliffe, John’s only other male love interest (and possibly, lover). Paul believed that he and John could not be jealous of one another’s relationships with women. But Stu? Paul admits to having hated Stu, and he doesn’t admit to hating anyone. He doesn’t like the part of himself that gets jealous and angry. But there was some incident in which Paul let John know something like, “I think you loved Stu more than me. I think if he were here, you would love him more than you love me. Do you love him more than me? Will you always love him more than me?”
And John responds with the moving lyrics of In My Life. He says to Paul, I’ve known a lot of people, friends and lovers (Stu was possibly both), and yes, I loved them, I loved Stu, sure, I definitely did, just like I loved my mum and Mimi and Uncle George and like I love Cynthia and Julian, I have loved lots of different people, and I will treasure their memories, I remember all the places and people I have loved, BUT THERE IS NO ONE WHO COMPARES WITH YOU. IN MY LIFE, I LOVE YOU MORE.”
I think there is just no way John would make such an open declaration of his feelings for Paul if he were completely closeted and repressing his feelings for Paul. And moreover, the lyrics do not read like the musings of a broken-hearted man who is keeping his feelings inside. They read like the response of a man to a serious question that his beloved has asked him. It’s like we’re coming in to the room in the middle of a conversation when we listen to this song.
And come on, look at Paul in 1965 (above), who could compare to him? John got to see Paul’s immense beauty every day up close for YEARS and plus he knew literally better than anyone the staggering depths of Paul’s musical and vocal genius and compositional brilliance. And John knew Paul as a person, too, as a man. Paul’s generosity, kindness, wit, his loving heart, his warm friendship. John had all of that. Only John had all of that, only John had every piece of Paul. How could anyone have compared to Paul McCartney?? It wasn’t possible.
So John gives Needy!Paul what he needs. John loved many people but he loved Paul THE MOST. The lyrics shut down the question entirely.
The fact that, in Paul’s recollection, John gave him the lyrics on a sheet of paper and Paul wrote the music makes the song, imo, an even more fantastic love song. Because that makes the song not a one-way answer by John to Paul, but actually a whole conversation between them.

Reporter: How old is this dog?
Paul: Seven weeks, actually. Seven weeks, so it doesn’t really understand about the BBC yet.
(I had to cut out the music in between to upload it)
Reporter Do you even resent everybody else recording your songs?
Paul & John: No, no, ever.
Paul: It’s all good, good stuff, whatever anyone does with it. They always make it different and normally better than we did
Reporter: You seriously mean that?
Paul: Yes
John: I don’t agree on that point Paul, no one’s better than you.
Paul: John doesn’t agree!
John: No, it’s just the opposite, I think…
John..“ ..No one is better than you, Paul..”..:) !
Reblog if you were born before November 29th 2001 as that means you were alive at the same time as George Harrison and you should feel blessed as anyone after that was born in the current time when there's only two Beatles left. You're special.

“One might even find repair in the heartbreak songs “Two of Us,” “Oh! Darling,” and “The Long and Winding Road.” John had broken Paul’s heart, but, for a time, Paul still had John to make music with him about it.” - Powers Of Two: How Relationships Drive Creativity, by Joshua Wolf Shenk
“When I first met George, I was dating Mama Cass’s sister, and she was staying at Cass’s. We heard George was coming over to visit Cass, so we looked at each other and Cass said, “Stay away!” We said, “Yeah, as if, not bloody likely!” I remember George asking me, “Why don’t you come back and play banjo on this session I’m producing in December?” I said, “I don’t have a banjo.” He said, “Well, Paul has one, so we’ll borrow his and restring it and give it back to him strung right-handed (chuckles). Anyway, I got to play Paul’s five-string banjo strung right-handed.”
Peter plays on the Wonderwall soundtrack but his track isn’t on the album.
“Some people have been listening to the Beatles their whole lives; I didn’t discover them until I was 18 years old. As a result, I’m still very affected and moved by their music - maybe in a way that’s different from someone who grew up around it.”

A letter Paul sent home from Hamburg. (Friday 10.30 / Freitag halb elf)
In case it’s hard to read:
“Dear dad and Mike,
Well, it’s not going too badly but one disadvantage is that we never get up in time to buy things like writing paper etc!! (as you can see) We can play pretty long hours but if we ever feel like going out we can do so, because the majority of places stay open till about 7 or 8 in the morning.
I bought a cheap watch at a weekly market they have here. It’s quite good + keeps good time (costs about 22p).
Because we[’re] getting so late in the day, we don’t have much time to write. That’s why I’m writing now at 10.30 before I go to sleep.
________________ For Mike / Tony Sheridan who was on Oh Boy! + the Empire is in Hamburg + we’re quite good friends. He played with us the other night for a guest spot. The club’s big but the microphone at the place where Sheridan used to play (The Top Ten) is fabulous + ours is pretty useless. ________________
I’m getting pretty homesick + even more so now because recently we’ve heard that we may be kept on! + may be in Germany for years! We really can’t refuse if they give us the chance because the money is much better than at home.
Everything’s mad here. People never sleep. The food’s nutty and just like English food gone wrong. Potatoes with salad cream/creme, cold tomatoes, lettuce + that grand luxury dish - ‘pottes frites’ or something, i. e. chips. Sausages are miles long and are made with fish + meat. Ugh! Ah well, we can buy cornflakes, beefsteak, liver, mashed potatoes, onions etc at the local cafe now, so we’re eating well. We can get a glass of milk for 13 Pfennigs, i.e. 2 1/2d so that’s cheap enough. Anyway I’d rather be home.
Don’t be frightened to write. I won’t be annoyed if you do.
Love + Aufwiedersehen!
Paul”
“I felt so robbed and so emotional. It shocked me for months afterwards and you couldn’t talk to me about guns. Any mention of the word ‘gun’, 'rifle’, 'pistol’, 'shoot’, just shocked me, sent a wave of reverberation through me like a little echo of the pistol shot. You couldn’t even say, 'That’s a good shot,’ about a photograph, it just rang through. The very next day after he was killed there was a pheasant shoot in the woods. Linda went out and talked to them. It was a tough period.”
Where John once marched for peace, today Paul marched for John.
What a moment in history ❤️
do not tell me that Paul wasn’t feeding John ‘cause I won’t believe you.
They probably did that all the time too
The Beatles signing autographs in 1963
“‘[McCartney] seemed to require public affection more than his older partner, and even that reward could feel empty if it wasn’t supported by Lennon’s approval. Nobody else could ever have made him admit, ‘I have always quite enjoyed being second… you’re still up with number one. Number one still needs you as his companion.’ Everywhere else in his life, McCartney demanded first position. But subservience to Lennon gave him a sense of worthiness he that couldn’t find elsewhere.”
