"It just sends chills up and down my spine when I think that we might have accomplished what most people would say was truly impossible -- finding a large mammal that exists on this earth that is totally unknown to science."
Scientists working off the western coast of Mexico say they have found a previously unknown species of whale.
Three beaked whales were spotted last month by a team of scientists working with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society near the San Benito Islands, some 300 miles from the US border, according to a press release published Tuesday.
The team had set out to try to find out what kind of whales were making an unidentified acoustic signal previously recorded in the area.
Beaked whale experts working alongside Sea Shepherd’s scientific department managed to take photographs and video recordings of the three whales, and also recorded their acoustic signals using an underwater microphone.

Head canon: Avatarverse does not use the same terms and concepts for queerness that Western viewers do.
A common assumption I’ve noticed when fans talk about sexual identities in Avatarverse that the people in that world would use the same terms and concepts familiar to Western viewers.
This is understandable. The Avatarverse is a Pan-Asian setting where everyone mysteriously speaks contemporary English vernacular. So, applying contemporary terminology for queer identities and queer experiences is somewhat expected.
That being said, if we dig deeper into the cultural inspirations for the Four Nations, there are other possibilities that are worth exploring. Consider the use of poetic euphemisms such as “the passion of the cut sleeve” or “the pleasure of the bitten peach.”
Hey guess what? I have resources! Mostly podcasts, weirdly enough. There’s a podcast that is quite good that focuses on queer history called Queer as Fact. They have actually covered many historical figures from outside Western history. If you like podcasts, here are some places to start:
Queer Love in Chinese History (focus on mlm relations in early Chinese history)
Wú Zǎo (19th century Chinese female poet and playwright)
Yoshiya Nobuko (early 20th century Japanese author, basically mother of the entire yuri genre)
Golden Orchid Societies (queer female Chinese relationships in the Pearl River Delta; also includes how to propose to your girlfriend with peanut candy)
Osh-Tisch (Indigenous North American, specifically Crow, Two-Spirit warrior and craftsperson)
We’wha (Indigenous North American, specifically Zuni, craftsperson and ambassador; laughs at settler gender binary)
If you want specifically LGBTQ and the Alaska Native community, there’s an episode of a podcast called Coffee and Quaq just for you! (The host, Alice Qannik Glenn, is an Alaska Native Iñupiaq)
