Heather Jackson Chapter 10: Earning it

While Heather is focusing on these vast numbers of miles ahead (see Chapter 9), the last thing she needs to think about is the placement of her GoPro and wondering “is it still attached?”

“Wattie, my husband, is really the photographer. He gets creative with mounts during practice but it’s pretty serious during a race. During training he’s practicing the “buddy system” and mounting cameras on my bike, but during a race we aren’t filming. Wattie and I do a drive through of the race and then plan ahead to see where he can meet me to hand off supplies between splits.”

How The Shot Was Captured: HERO4 Silver, Burst Mode, 30/3

Pro Tip: We used the Roll Ball Mount to securely fasten the Hero4 Silver to the frame of the bike. In order for the perspective to be a few inches away from the frame we then screwed on two extension pieces while keeping the orientation of the camera vertical.

What is the most important part of photography to you?

I think that the most important part of photography is the capturing the moment feeling. I use an analog camera, so I need to think about every shot I take, because of the limited number of photos. I take a photo of things that are interesting, sometimes a little unexpected, or just beautiful. My goal is to have a photo with a ‘soul’ in it, that can make you experience something. The second most important part is sharing your work. I post my photos to various accounts, such as Behance, DeviantArt, Tumblr and Instagram. I love seeing people react to my photos, leaving comments about them. It’s the best thing about Internet; everyone from everywhere in the world can see you work, and tell you how they feel about it.

Cafe Art, a United Kingdom-based social enterprise, distributed 100 single-use cameras to homeless people in London in July and asked them to take photos with the simple theme, “My London.“ Eighty cameras came back, with more than 2,500 pictures on them. The results were not only striking — but showed a perspective we rarely see.
