the biggest reason men refuse to recognize a lot of what they do to women as sexual harassment/assault is bc of their misogyny and wanting to maintain our power over women, 100%. this is from like 1947 but still, this has always been and still is a thing. men will diagnose men as gay for being straight and submissive. patriarchy defines heterosexuality in men as dominating women, and consider submitting to women to be a sign that one is or will become homosexual. male dominance and female submission is so inherent in the minds of these men that male submission could only be, deep down, to other men.

the very existence of hetgnc people is regularly denied and covered up because it directly challenges and disproves the gender hierarchy. we are ignored dismissed and buried because our reality is an absolute threat to the patriarchy. we cant even be a scapegoat; we are the finishing blow and that is why we re so feared and hated that theyre too afraid to even name us

this should not be difficult to understand but somehow most of the world cant comprehend it

i grew up in an era where any possibility that gender roles were more lax in the past was instantly shut down. men were the hunters, women were the gatherers, gender roles were NEVER subverted in other cultures, they were the same world wide

except they werent. i would dive as deep as i possibly could as a teenager and found whatever trace of evidence i could that this was wrong. ten years later, i would be proven correct- that archaelogists where assuming any skeleton buried with a spear was genetically male, until they developed a way to uncover the DNA and realized they'd been wrong almost half the time

the ancient romans didnt really have a distinction between heterosexual and homosexual, it was all about whether you followed male or female gender roles, both in dress and in bed. terms like cinaedus and malakoi have been debated and argued to mean homosexual, even tho theres evidence that cinaedi could be 'womanizers' and malakoi didn't directly translate to gay. these terms emphazized expression and roles over sexuality

our society, for hundreds of years, defined all forms of queerness under barely one or two terms. 100 years ago, there was no distinction between trans and homosexual. everyone had to share the label of deviant and received the same treatment

assuming being gnc is the same as being transgender or homosexual is the same; there can absolutely be overlap! but they are distinct terms and should not be used interchangeably. a trans woman can be straight but not accepted as such by wider gendernormative society. a gay or trans man can be masculine but not receive full male privilege if hes out. cis or het gnc people are not exempt from privilege, but we are not accepted by wider society as a whole and do not have the same experiences as gender conforming cishet people. i dont understand why so many believe we live in an equal society where gender roles do not dominate every aspect of existence, or that breaking them goes unpunished when its been demonized for over 2000 years

I would actually make the argument that the heart of the problem here is not either about fans, as the article claims, or production companies being exploitative cowards, as some of the comments are claiming. The heart of the problem is the increasingly eroding privacy we are seeing in the modern age.

There's some people in the comments saying "fandoms have always been like this" and others saying "No, it's worse than it was." And both are to some extent right. Fans (or at least a small percentage of fans, and the larger a fanbase gets the larger a group this will describe) have always been Like That; but they did not always have the level of access to creators and actors that they have now.

The notion that a performer needs to be constantly available to public scrutiny, that their personal information should by default be available to any rando with google, is pretty new. It used to be that actors would only be expected to engage with the public on limited, specific, and controlled occasions, usually with security provided. Now they're being asked to rawdog exposure to the mob 24/7 on their own.

(Also, production companies have always always always been exploitative cowards, just to get that straight; reading the biographies of literally any actress from golden Hollywood years makes that clear. It's just, again, more public now.)

There has also been a negative feedback loop as fandoms come to realize that the constant access they have to creatives increases their leverage and power. It did not use to be the case that this was so; fandoms pre-internet largely worked under the assumption that they didn't really have any meaningful way to contact or influence the publication houses. Even if they sent a letter or a campaign of letters, they wouldn't even know whether the letters were being received or read unless the publishing house chose to respond. So, without that expectation of access, the drama usually stayed internal. Nowadays, with constant immediate feedback from creators and publishers, fans are ever more incentivized to act out to try to push an agenda, get attention, or just vent whatever is going on in their lives onto a face contractually obliged to be friendly to them.
