Toni Morrison: Nobel Prize-winning author dies at 88

President Obama remembered Morrison on Tuesday as “a national treasure” who was “as good a storyteller, as captivating, in person as she was on the page”.

“Her writing was a beautiful, meaningful challenge to our conscience and our moral imagination,” he said. “What a gift to breathe the same air as her, if only for a while.”

The priest made a controversial statement today. He said, "if it was ISIS or Al-Quaeda who killed those people yesterday in Texas...we would go to to war but if it's normal people, we're not doing anything and the NRA is silent! We're not safe anymore in this country and we have to pray to God!" He's right but my question is how many thoughts and prayers do we need? Because apparently it's not working. Last week, 12 people were shot in Brooklyn. Yesterday 20 people were killed in El Paso, Texas and now there's a mass shooting in Ohio. Those responsible gun owners, where were you and how come you didn't come to protect the victims? I guess the good ol USA likes violence. It was created by violence, every country it invaded, ended in violence and now violence is eating its very core. Historic win for Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire after halting global cocoa sales until farmers get fair price

Only a day after its first and historic joint-decision to halt the sales of cocoa on the international market until fair prices are agreed on, the top producers of cocoa globally, have won big.

On Wednesday, Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire announced in a joint statement that they had won concessions from stakeholders in the cocoa industry including the acceptance of a $2,600-floor price for a tonne of cocoa.  

Over the years, buyers of the cash crop have always been the ones to determine the price for suppliers and this was one of the main items on the agenda of a two-day meeting of stakeholders, producers and consumers in the sector, held in Accra.

so i really like this show, overall. i’ve been a fan of Spike Lee for some time and his work is always very on-the-nose in a realistic and entertaining way. there’s an artistry and a sense of humor to his film that isn’t so common anymore. and then it’s almost always layered on top of a political, socially conscious undertone to everything. this show doesn’t step outside of that tradition. 

but i will say that the character Olu was a hot ass stale ass mess. he reminded me of Djimon Honsou’s character Joe in ‘Beauty Shop’ - a caricature; a hypersexual cliche of an African man. this cliche has been played out in a number of African American films and it just needs to stop. and i get that Olu was an artist, so eccentricity was expected. but dressed like a Wakandan extra who never takes actual offence to Nola’s insults, but is even more turned on by them? just stop. he’s like the African Pepe Le Pew. it’s like the caricature of the African American who’s always dressed in baggy clothes, speaks like he’s rapping and takes the position of the comic relief - they’re stale caricatures that lack depth, dimension, or nuance. and i’m bored. for Spike Lee to claim to be all pro-Black and to still be representing African men as this one-dimensional monolith is just sad. 

that said, the episode about Puerto Rico was amazing. he featured actual PR organizations that are actually taking donations and included some history about the situation and what’s going on now. that episode is the ideal of how to confront current, real situations within a fictional film/series setting…and with a political message. 

but let me also say, to the film directors/writers who don’t know much about Lukumi/Regla de Ocha/Ifa/Orisa (or any other ATRs)…THERE’S MORE TO OUR SPIRITUALITY THAN OSHUN. Oshun is an amazing orisha who deserves all the respect and visibility, but there are other Orisa. not every attractive woman is “la hija de Ochun”. that’s not how this works. it’s becoming a bit cliche to feature Ifa/Orisa in some capacity in a film/series, and yet none of the main characters (with the exception of Mars’ sister, i think) are actual priests/practitioners; Nola is open enough to take inspiration from some interpretation of the Orisa, but not actually interested enough to become serious about the spirituality. and that’s cool for some people, but i fear that these depictions result in a lot of people thinking that’s all there is to this spirituality - dancing at the ocean and wearing certain colors. it (this spirituality, my spirituality), just like “the African” Olu, is becoming a caricature of itself in some of these more recent films/series. we’ve moved on from “voodoo dolls”, which is progress, but the bar needs to push as close towards accuracy as it can be. and this film (or Queen Sugar’s Nova, or Luke Cage’s Bushmaster, etc.) ain’t it.

Claiming that no MoC could simultaneously in love with a white woman and "pro-his ethnicity" conflates the ideas of love and politics in a way that is unhelpful. While expressions of love can be political (any relationship that falls outside the boundaries of white cis-het normativity), love itself it not. Loving an individual of a different racial or ethnic background than your own does not undermine your own racial or ethnic identity or your politics surrounding them.

The fact of the matter is that 99.9 percent of men of color who are with white women, do so while hating women of color of their own ethnicity. Men of color who are with white women have spoken ill about the women in their own ethnicity, made fun of them, etc. That makes it IMPOSSIBLE to be pro-your ethnicitiy. If you are with a white woman and and one of the reasons is bcs you hated the women in your own race, then you cannot be pro-your ethnicity. 

loving an individual if a different ethnic group doesn’t undermine your racial identity, but if you hate the women of your own race while loving someone of a different ethnic group then it sets you apart from your own ethnic group and others you because you are choosing whiteness and white supremacy over women of color in your own community. in addition, you are giving white women leeway to be racist toward women of color.

you cannot be pro-your ethnicity if you are allowing this. if you hate women of color in your own ethnic group but love white women, then you cannot be pro your ethnicity..

March is Women’s History Month! To celebrate, we’re honoring the courage of those who insisted women have a voice at the ballot box.

First up is Ida B. Wells. Ida devoted her life to the cause of justice as a journalist and activist. She ensured Black women had a voice in the suffrage movement even when they were excluded from other organizations and activities. Ida also championed the right to vote for the entire Black community, helping found civil rights organizations including The National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs and the NAACP.
