'One Million Moms' Says New Fox TV Series 'Lucifer' 'Mocks the Bible,' Starts Petition Urging for Show's Cancellation

The American Family Association's One Million Moms website has launched a petition calling for Fox to halt its plans to air a new television series called "Lucifer" in 2016, saying the program "mischaracterizes" Satan and "mocks the Bible."

Ah. It seems like only yesterday (but it was 1991) that the “Concerned Mothers of America” announced that they were boycotting SANDMAN because it contained Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans characters. It was Wanda that upset them most: the idea of a Trans Woman in a comic book… They told us they were organising a boycott of SANDMAN, which they would only stop if we wrote to the American Family Association and promised to reform.

I wonder if they noticed it didn’t work last time, either…

They’ve just launched a new petition agains Season Two. I feel weird about the fact I think of them as lucky, but I really do. Sandman took off after their boycott was announced, and Lucifer seems to have been astonishingly well received and is coming back for a second season. Never change, Concerned Mothers of America (it was a better name than 1 Million Moms, honestly, because we wouldn’t have noticed the vast disparity between your name and your 3,528 Twitter followers if you were still the CMA).

Now I was probably most definitely (way) too young to read Sandman when I first picked up Preludes & Nocturnes in all its glossy paperback glory. I was perhaps twelve or thirteen years old? Somehow I convinced my dad to buy it for me, and several of the other collections, showing him only the pretty artwork (and none of the graphic scenes I’d find later on).

To this day though I remember being absolutely amazed to read a story with Lesbian, Gay, Bi, and Trans characters that were just… so real. Flawed and human and it was really the first time I’d ever been presented with the idea that adults can be scared too, and mean, and screw up, and kind, and brave, and strong all at the same time. It was the first time I had ever read a story with multiple pantheons in action. There’s a line Death has where she says so casually that one doesn’t have to go to Egypt to talk to Ra, he’s the sun god or well “one of them anyways”. That actually made me want to go learn about different gods because I wondered well just how many sun gods are there? It was the first time I’d ever come across a depiction of Lucifer that wasn’t straight up Sunday School and I didn’t grow up in a particularly strict Christian household either. It was just a narrative I’d never been exposed to until Sandman introduced me to a “necessary evil” Lucifer who got tired of running Hell. It was also the first time I had ever seen Death depicted as a beautiful young woman, not as an evil skeleton coming to take everything I loved away.

Reading Sandman taught me that everyone is human, even the immensely powerful and ancient can still make mistakes and feel pangs of loneliness. It got me thinking seriously as a kid. I got this crazy idea in my head that just maybe people didn’t have to be like me in orientation, religion, gender identity, etc. to deserve my respect. Heck, they didn’t even need to be human. If I could learn to empathize with and accept unconditionally characters in a comic book, then I could learn to do the same for people in the real world too.

“Concerned Mothers of America”/”One Million Moms”, censoring these kinds of narratives on a national level is not an effective parenting strategy. If you’re truly concerned about your kids’ exposure to narratives you deem inappropriate, then take more than a passing interest in what they’re reading and watching. These narratives aren’t usually geared towards young children anyways. You’re the parent. You are the adult, however fallible, and it is your responsibility to raise your kids.

Just know that these stories may very well teach your kids how to accept and respect others someday, and that is not such a bad thing.

I don’t know a thing about Sandman but I’ve seen Lucifer (very good, I enjoyed it immensely) and I think it’s hilarious they think it “Mischaracterizes” Lucifer.  Honestly, it’s hilarious!  The show depicts the angel lucifer (and the devil IS an angel in catholic mythology; fallen, but an angel nonetheless) as a proud being (he fell due to pride, check) who reigned over hell because God sent him there (check number two) and who’s entire purpose since the fall is punishing the guilty.  Check number three.  

Furthermore, he’s depicted as gorgeous (and the actor isn’t bad looking in my opinion), and in commonly accepted myth Lucifer was considered to be the most beautiful of all angels.  He’s also shown to be an impeccable musician, and myth says he led the angelic choir.

Then again…the show very strongly implies Lucifer is not evil but is in fact a divinity like all angels who is performing a task given him by god (albeit unwillingly so).  Which….fits the facts of the mythology and is something I’ve always understood, but mainstream christianity paints the Fallen as utterly and irredeemably evil period no matter what, so…in a way I can see their point.
