I’ve seen so many people talk about how Morganthe’s “so similar to Malistaire” because she “turned evil” due to Malory’s death and… y’all that’s just so far from the truth.
Not once does she ever mention Malory as shadow queen. She doesn’t even talk about him as a child- after Avalon, we never hear her say a single thing about him. All Malistaire talked about was how he was going to revive Sylvia and so forth. Morganthe said nothing about Mallory, so idk were people are getting that from.
To further drive home that point, I don’t even think Morganthe wanted to remember Malory after Avalon. They were both living their best life, Morganthe under Ambrose’s studies, and Malory as King Artorius’s right hand man and Knight of the Silver Rose, then out of nowhere he comes up with a scheme to become king himself and involved Morgnathe in it. The wildest part is she didn’t even want to do what he asked of her! She outright said she didn’t want to hurt people, and she didn’t want him to die.
He ignored her plea and both of those things happens and she’s left in the ashes. Malory’s name was erased from history, perhaps she did so too with her memory, at least subconsciously to cope. I think that’s shy she never talks about him- she can’t forgive him.
If anything, she talks about Ambrose much more often, which makes sense of course, he was her mentor who cast her out after he blamed her for something she was not entirely at fault for- and the fact that Merle has a new student (us) that basically took her place is upsetting. It shows that she was replaceable, that she pretty much meant nothing to him (which isn’t the case, but that’’s how she reads the situation).
The real crazy thing though that I think A LOT of people look over is that when Morganthe was in Khrysalis with Taylor Coleridge, she was NOT actively seeking out shadow magic- she was ONLY interested in learning how to handle Astral magic.
All she wanted was to learn how to control Astral magic, and probably return to Ambrose and show hi he was wrong, she could control herself. But what did she get? Ambushed by Aracnha Magi and forced into “testings” to see if she could be “the one”.
And after that, we have no idea exactly how she came to be the shadow queen. Cob tells us “she was infused with a great rush of death magic” and she “refused to share what she had learned” from the shadow magi.
One thing is for certain though: she clearly did not become the shadow queen willingly.
One last thing I thing about a lot is Morganthe’s supposed death. For one, we didn’t strike her down. She was her own downfall- though a part of me thinks she intentionally fell, or perhaps was trying to fake her death (you think she’s stupid enough to just stand on the only glass panel in her castle? yea, as if). Also, her last line is very ominous:
She suddenly cut herself off in the middle of her sentence, like she’s talking to someone else. It’s weird.
And then of course Old Cob has this to say:
We’ve absorbed her “stolen” power- not the power she had to begin with as a normal wizard, but the power she gained to become shadow queen. We already have proof Morganthe did not willingly accept the Arachna’s idea of putting her through the “testing”, so why would she steal this power?
Cause she didn’t- I think they used the conversion tables to infuse her with a great rush of power (Cob tells us this himself in fact) so that Cob could saturate her with enough power so that she would become blind with rage- almost like a puppet to him.
Anyway Morganthe’s really misunderstood y’all like my theories aside, most of this is just canon information that people simply look over. She’s a good character y’all :’D
