Grasslands Brewery
It all started back in 2008 when Gabe Grass decided he wanted to try and make a beer that he wanted—exactly like he wanted. Like many, his first attempts weren’t completely drinkable, to say the least; however, a brewing kit he got for his birthday may have changed everything. Gabe started brewing more frequently, mixing different strains of yeast, and adding different malts and hops, and in due time, he had several products that were worth sharing—which is exactly what he plans on doing. Hopefully within a year, GrassLands Brewing Company will have the perfect location for production and an onsite taproom! He will offer tours of the brewery and tastings. For those of you who enjoy some grub while you’re sipping on some craft beers, he hopes to be able to invite Food Trucks to his location! When he opens up shop, he will produce and distribute 4 or 5 styles available year-round, plus experimental beers that will only be available onsite at the taproom. GrassLands’ flagship will be an Amber Rye, which offers sweet, spicy, and hoppy flavors all in one. Gabe hopes to be able to distribute his brews to both Tallahassee and surrounding markets, then to the state of Florida, and nationally. As a member of the North Florida Brewers League, Gabe continues to be inspired by fellow homebrewers and is constantly perfecting and replicating his recipes to get the unique taste he wants. Tallahassee is definitely a successful market for a craft beer brewery like GrassLands and it will be exciting to watch it grow and prosper!
We all know and love every aspect of this Tallahassee Banner. What would you add?
Except that it did. As of today, Facebook supports hashtags.

Daniel Crespo, a more than familiar name around the campus of FSU, is a DJ who started his career in Tallahassee. He made some of his first solo appearances in clubs that were THE places to be on a Thursday and Friday—Chubbys and 20/20, may they rest in peace. If you were a student circa 2009-today then you would have had the opportunity to watch him grow and create his brand of DJ Crespo. While spinning some of the most popular clubs in Tallahassee, he had the chance to DJ alongside HUGE names like Avicii, Tommy Trash, Steve Aoki and much more. Today, he DJs on main stages at out of this world music festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival, DAYGLOW, and Spring Weekend. His style blends the lines of genres and creates a “cant sit still” melody that is a certain crowd pleaser. He returns to Tallahassee when he can, and NEVER fails to put on a good show. Crespo is creating a recognizable brand heard around the nation, and it is truly incredible to know that he started in Tally. What are T-Pains qualifications for Tallahassee Hero? To the students of FSU, Crespo may be just that. We’d like to wish him nothing but a prosperous career and hope to see him back in Tallahassee, soon! You can check out some of his music here: https://soundcloud.com/crespothedj

Tallahassee Retains Creative Talent
Tallahassee may seem like a revolving door, at times. Students come here for four (or five) years to get their bachelors degrees, and then the vast majority of them move away for grad school or job opportunities. What about those who graduate from Florida State University and get full-time job offers? The advertising industry is hard to break into; even harder in a small town with few well-known agencies. Can you start a successful advertising career in an agency located in Tallahassee? This post will feature two communication students who graduated on May 4th, 2013 and have opted to stay in Tallahassee per full time job offers.
Michael Merali -- Assistant Account Manager at ThinkCreative.
Having discovered Advertising during my freshman year at Florida State, I quickly fell in love with account management, or the “business of advertising” as I like to call it. Through The Pod Advertising, where I spent the better part of my junior and senior year, I found myself at ThinkCreative, where I now work as an assistant account manager. When I’m not working, I find myself on the tennis court hitting around with close friends.

Lynzee Jablonka -- Community Manager at PeopleOps LLC.
During my time at FSU, I explored every aspect of advertising. Social Media quickly became my passion—I loved the fast paced and forever changing traits it offered. I had my first internship at The Zimmerman Agency. I worked as a junior content coordinator and fell in love. I moved on to Ron Sach’s communication, now known as Sach’s Media Group, and polished my abilities further. I now am a Community Manager at PeopleOps, and could not have asked for a better first choice. It may not be in a grand city, but I have the opportunity to work with immensely talented individuals who value the importance of culture, and encourage me to find my own blueprint-- a true startup atmosphere.

3 Things Needed to Cultivate a strong Startup Community..It's a mission statement
Tallahassee has been trying to inject a startup culture similar to Boulder, Austin, and of course Silicon Valley for several years now. Several organizations have tried and tried. The question is why hasn’t the culture taken hold? Here are a few “must have” ingredients needed and hopefully together we can make this happen.
Strong Computer Science department. Computer Science graduates from the Top 20 schools are among the most sought after demographic for companies of all sizes...they also are the highest percentage of degrees found among the elite startups globally. Why is this? Computer Science is the foundation around majority of software applications. With the barrier of entry to creating products with software decreasing by the year, this by far represents the greatest percentage of newly formed businesses. Tallahassee needs to make sure we invest not only in the CS department itself but also in marketing it to the rest of the world. If companies think they can find strong tech talent from our CS program, they will start companies and bring companies here.
Investment dollars AND mentorship. Most of the time, if a “mentor” that doesn’t have capital to actually invest in a startup is trying to help it...that mentor may not really have the chops the founders need. The reason behind the success of Y-Combinator and other major accelerators has little to do with the combination of advice from people who have successfully founded companies as well as can actually put their $$ where their mouth is.
Plug and play services. While this the least important, its still important. Founders in startup “Mecca's” like Austin can get cheap co-working office space with all the perks without signing a lease. If we really want to make Tally work for startups, Tally has to be willing to work for startups!

Based and founded right out of Tallahassee, PeerlySocial, hopes to take the social media world by storm. PeerlySocial is just like any other social media network in the sense of content sharing and conversing with your peers—only, more intimate. On PeerlySocial, you will have smaller social circles, much like hanging out at a cocktail party. That’s the environment that was intended when it was created. This modified sharing method enables users to share content with relevance and meaning. Security is a major feature of PeerlySocial.
Unlike other social media platforms, PeerlySocial absolutely will not sell the users information for ad sales i.e. the sponsored posts you see on the side of your newsfeed. PeerlySocial will be subscription based, and will cost only about $1-3 per month. Here’s the kicker, a portion of all the subscription proceeds will be donated to a charity here, in Tallahassee. The subscription fee is a way to opt out of pesky advertisements that clutter your newsfeed and invade your timeline. The site is planned to launch in late August or early September, and will be on a college campus near you!
