U is for Umbrella

Alphabest is a collaborative project organized by AEPDX, the local After Effect user group, which premiered at Design Week Portland 2016. Each artist was given complete creative control to create an animation fifteen seconds to one minute long based on any word that started with their randomly assigned letter from the English alphabet.

The stationary umbrellas and backgrounds are Noodler’s Ink on Arches 300 lb. watercolor paper, the animated umbrellas were drawn and painted on 3″x5″ notecards, the umbrella handles are sculpture wire, and everything was composited in Adobe After Effects CC.

This project was a blast, there are so many talented animators in Portland! I created the first segment with the ballet/break dancer, which was animated on 3″x5″ notecards using an iPad as a lightbox, then captured with my iPhone. Why? Because I was traveling abroad in Tokyo, Japan.

The Shores of Swan Lake, in the open call portion of the Recycled Rain Project 2014 (hanging in the Olympic Mills Building in Portland, Oregon until June 14th)! It's based on the Swan Maiden fairytale and Swan Lake. I hand carved 300lb Arches watercolor paper with exact knives, painted the pieces with Noodler's Ink, jointed the puppets with sculpture wire for stop motion animation, then mounted it all in a shadowbox.

I'm in the process of making a digitally animated version of this as well, but in the meantime see the animation attached the the QR code here!
