there's so much to be said about how the version of himself buck wants to be is the buck who exists in eddie's pov. he is full of whimsy, a lovable idiot. but he is also someone who can be trusted, a person who will step up for the people he loves. a fixer who is steady and reliable. eddie sees buck exactly how he wants to be seen
meanwhile, eddie is buck's pov is like the most beautiful creature on earth. he is bathed in golden light, and he is more radiant than the sun. in buck's pov, eddie is the coolest and bravest and funniest and kindest and the best dad. buck sees every good thing about eddie even when eddie doesn't always feel that way about himself

Delusional buddie thought of the day: Eddie fell first can still win when you consider the possible metaphor for their relationship that exists with the ambulance and the way Eddie is just waiting for Buck to catch up to him to go in and the way that Eddie only starts taking the grenade out once Buck says he's ready and that is one of the only instances they actually ask. Considering the possible consequences of going there when it comes to them, Eddie is not pulling the grenade unless Buck tells him to, so Buck is the one who needs to get there on his own while Eddie waits for the go ahead.
Okay, so, I was talking to @spaceshipkat, and I've been trying to figure out what's up with this. Why I keep getting stuck on the overlapping going on here. The way Eddie is waiting for news, where Buck was sitting with Theo.
Because while it's not all that insane that Eddie is chilling in the ambulance now he's a paramedic, I have been stuck on the fact that the 915 talk, where Buck tries to ask for help, happened in the ambulance.
So, talking to Kat, she mentioned 201, I remembered this post, and the ladder truck of life-changing events has gained a friend. The "ready?" ambulance.

Buddie exists because of an ambulance.
Eddie volunteers to go inside the ambulance to take the grenade out, Buck doesn't let him do it alone, together they actually make it out, even though they almost don't, because the ambulance explodes.
Eddie waits by the ambulance, he gives Buck the tools once he's ready to step in, and this is one of the few times on the job that Eddie actually asks Buck if he's ready.
And sure, when I'm only thinking about 201, I'm just creating a metaphor for the way that Eddie gives Buck the options and waits for him to choose. He never pushes Buck to do what he wants, he waits for Buck to offer. It's why the will reveal happens how it happens, he only asks for Buck to take in that role after Buck takes it willingly. Even the "you can have my back any day" is phrased in a way that gives Buck the option. So, Eddie is waiting to see if Buck is gonna go into this with him.

And before you say "they are at the station, of course the ambulance is there."
Nope. They have other vehicles. Honestly, the ladder truck and the engine show up a lot more.
So the ambulance popping up in these moments feels pointed. Especially because we are back to the 201 of it all, where there are actual things happening inside the ambulance, especially with the 915 talk, which was such an important step because Buck got it. He said he needed help. But he chickened out.
So, maybe, my joke about the 201 being the roadmap, and how the way things unfold for them to get into the ambulance and leave it connected shows the way they'll happen, might have some merit after all.

not only did s9 as a whole break records, but it also had singular episodes where both buck and eddie beat their personal episodic records. in the nsv crossover, buck beat his previous high of 15 in 811 with 18, and eddie hit 11, beating his previous four way tie of 5 in 303, 610, 808, and 907. then, the very next week in 913, eddie surpassed his new record again with 17—only 1 behind buck's all time high.
s9's combined buck and eddie totals are higher than s7 and s8 combined. separately, it is also higher than s4, s6, and s7 combined.
eddie was in the lead for the majority of s9, but it ultimately ended in a tie between buck and eddie. eddie has only ever finished ahead once before, in s4, with a score of 14 beating buck's 13. the last time they had an even split was in s6. this also happens to be the only other time they have tied. their counts were only 9 each (the s6 drought was real), for a combined total of 18. s9 ending with 45 each, or 90 combined, marks a 400% increase from the last tie.
overall, across all episodes and seasons combined, buck remains in the lead with 188 over eddie's 135.

it's actually insane work to have buck accuse eddie in mother's boy of just doing whatever he tells him when it's been established that. yeah. he does. it's evident especially in this season. it was buck's idea to scare hen with an alien mask and who was the one that jumped out of the ambulance to do it? eddie. eddie, who eats every experiment buck bakes without complaint OR hesitation. eddie, mr adament he will not be dating anytime soon, let buck drag him out on the prowl for a hookup with no intention of actually hooking up with anyone. we all know buck convinced him the black eye was not an excuse to skip out on the auction but to use it as an accessory. eddie went a different route than planned because buck suggested it. he does what buck tells him and more. he invited shannon back into christopher's life after his conversation with buck, he broke up with ana after buck made him see reason, he confessed to kim because buck convinced him to. he's the only other person (besides buck) who dressed in the 80's theme for chim's bachelor party because buck. said to. and it was a joint costume. he let himself be doused in perfume to attract and catch bees because why? buck. buck tells him to dad up and he fucking does. even when buck's not trying he's the reason (allegedly). buck's the reason eddie joined an illegal fighting ring, is the reason eddie changed his will, is the reason he forced himself into a relationship with marisol, is the reason he blew up his whole life, is the reason he stopped being friends with someone, is the reason he jumped off a bridge. god it really is the "eddie makes everything about buck" show isn't it?
