That’s actually a really intetesting intpretation of it I hadn’t thought of. Most people seem to think Athena turned Medusa into a gorgon as punishment for defiling her temple, but thinking that she did so to protect her from being abused again is interesting and I like it!

Athena’s hands were tied. Yes, she was a powerful Goddess, but she was very much a woman in a “boys club”, and the true offending party (don’t think for a moment that Athena blamed Medusa for being raped in the temple, Athena knows better) held all the cards. There was nothing that Athena could do to punish the true criminal, and she was expected to punish Medusa by everyone else. What’s a Goddess to do when she cannot punish those who need to be punished and is expected to punish not only the truly innocent party, but her most beloved follower? Use that incredible brain power she had to protect Medusa at all costs, and of course the men would see it as punishment, to be have her beauty stripped from her and sent to live in the shadows. Medusa should have been KILLED for supposedly defiling the temple, whether she truly did or not, but she was given the gift of life, and the ability to protect herself and her daughters (who she bore thanks to Poseidon). This is why Medusa’s image was used to signify woman’s shelters and safe houses.

Medusa means “guardian; protectress”, and she was.

Looks more like Dionysos to me. There even is a thyrsos in the back.

Why is the fresco identified as Hermaphroditos? Am I missing something?

Hermaphroditus’ symbols included a lot of Dionysus’ symbols (Kylix, Wine, Thyrsus, etc…) because he was well known as a Bacchai (any entities that follow or are friends with Dionysus); all the Bacchai carry a Thyrsus. The reason they’re specifically his symbols, though, is because as an intersex person he was seen as a blend between male and female and outside of “acceptable society” and Dionysus was a god of blurring lines and living outside of acceptable society.

i think this may be my favorite review of the odyssey ever. like, homer’s odyssey is a marvel of oral tradition and one of the most important and influential poems from ancient greece and this dude just obliterates it with one simple sentence

The great thing about the Odyssey is that while the Iliad is about the deeds and despair of war– Hector and Andromache’s bittersweet farewell on the walls of Troy, Achilles longing to eat Hector’s flesh like a dog on the battlefield, Priam reminding Achilles of his own father and convincing him to return Hector’s body, Helen wondering if her brothers abandoned her out of hatred, not knowing they were killed– the Iliad is peaks and chasms, a landscape of extremes, but the Odyssey is gray. The Odyssey is the aftermath, when everything is covered in dust, when the price of famous and infamous deeds is revealed, when the hero simply wants to go home, and cannot. When the dead regret their choices in life. When you finally do return and find that nothing was static or caught out of time when you were gone, and few remember you. When you are one of a handful of survivors, the rest of your companions dead. When you’ve endured the worst horrors, yet in the end you are thwarted by mortal and immortal pettiness. When a man hailed as a hero becomes nothing more than a murderer of maids.
