Cool is coming
by Matthew Heiti
“Cool” is one of those elusive words, tough to pin down but ever ready in a hip-holster. It defies generation, language, class and creed. It’s personal. It’s open source. Cool is cutting edge, cool is retro, cool wanders and has found a home in the hypnotic capitals: the sweep of Paris, the sprawl of London, the boroughs of New York. Cool even spiders northwards to Montréal, Vancouver. Toronto. But not Sudbury.
I say this as a passionate lifetime lover of this city. I was born here, raised here, and even when I tromped about elsewhere, I knew I would be coming back home. Back to the black rock going green, to the deep water and warm faces, to the rough and tumble streets stitched inside my own heart.
But here, the closest I ever got to cool was lurking outside Top Hat Amusements on Elm Street, watching kids with Mohawks taking on pellets and mazes and alien spaceships.
We’ve always just been one step behind, a little out of touch. Our fashion, our food, our music arrived hand-me-down on the Budd car, terminally behind schedule. We swatted down buildings like they were paper and turned our backs on the downtown.
But sometimes the bottom has to fall out so you can put down new roots. Somewhere along the way, we stopped trying to be Toronto’s dirty little brother. We started embracing the things about being a “mining town” that used to embarrass us. But we won’t let a smokestack alone define us. We drink from our potholes, and they runneth over. We will go our own way.
Thanks to some truly talented and wonderful folks, Up Fest is coming. What is it? It’s music, it’s art, it’s a festival, it’s a happening, it’s one hell of a street party. It’s indefinable. Elusive, like some words. I’m not sure what it’s going to be. But I do know it’ll be cool. Like so much of what we’re growing in the core of our city right now. Festivals and dusk patios and weekend brunches and open-air markets and all night dance parties. I feel like that kid again, peering in from the street at all the fun. And I’m okay with that. Up here is a cool place to be.
So, to do a small part to spread the good word, I’m talking to some truly cool folks about music as part of a storytelling series called Saturday Morning re:Retro. You can check it out here.
