The Woodstock Music & Art Fair opened 48 years ago today, Aug. 15, 1969. Over 400,000 people attended including this couple pictured here. âI like this shot of a handsome young hippie couple,â photographer John Dominis told LIFE.com in a past interview. âThey seem so comfortable with each other. A very endearing image, I think.â (John DominisâThe LIFE Picture Collection/Getty Images) #Woodstock
Book collecting is an obsession, an occupation, a disease, an addiction, a fascination, an absurdity, a fate. It is not a hobby. Those who do it must do it.

Art is how we decorate space; music is how we decorate time.
Q: âPaul, how often have you taken LSD?â PAUL: (pause) âAbout four times.â Q: âAnd where did you get it from?â PAUL: âWell, you know, if I was to say where I got it from, you know, I mean⊠itâs illegal and everything⊠itâs silly to say that, you know. So Iâd rather not say that.â Q: âDonât you believe that this is a matter which you should have kept private?â PAUL: âMmm, but the thing is â I was asked a question by a newspaper, and the decision was whether to tell a lie or tell him the truth. I decided to tell him the truth⊠but I really didnât want to say anything, you know, because if I had my way I wouldnât have told anyone. Iâm not trying to spread the word about this. But the man from the newspaper is the man from the mass medium. Iâll keep it a personal thing if he does too you know⊠if he keeps it quiet. But he wanted to spread it so itâs his responsibility, you know, for spreading it not mine.â Q: âBut youâre a public figure and you said it in the first place and you must have known it would make the newspaper.â PAUL: âYeah, but to say it is only to tell the truth. Iâm telling the truth, you know. I donât know what everyoneâs so angry about.â Q: âDo you think that you have now encouraged your fans to take drugs?â PAUL: (clearly and calmly) âI donât think itâll make any difference. I donât think my fans are going to take drugs just because I did, you know. But the thing is â thatâs not the point anyway. I was asked whether I had or not. And from then on, the whole bit about how far itâs gonna go and how many people itâs going to encourage is up to the newspapers, and up to you on television. I mean, youâre spreading this now, at this moment. This is going into all the homes in Britain. And Iâd rather it didnât. But youâre asking me the question â You want me to be honest â Iâll be honest.â Q: âBut as a public figure, surely youâve got the responsibility toâŠâ PAUL: ââŠNo, itâs you whoâve got the responsibility. Youâve got the responsibility not to spread this NOW. You know, Iâm quite prepared to keep it as a very personal thing if you will too. If youâll shut up about it, I will.âÂ

The music industry went from trying to make recordings sound as good as a live performance, to trying to make live performances sound as good as a record.
