#i posted about this once a few years ago but it's almost overwhelming to watch old movies#everyone in a blockbuster now is preternaturally beautiful#because they start with the most beautiful people on earth#and then put them on unsustainable diets#unsustainable training regimen#utterly impractical makeup#and then lavish post-production#by contrast even the most beautiful women in old movies#very often look like someone you could feasibly run into in a decent restaurant on a friday or saturday night#or even like... the grocery store#a man whose physical strength is literally part of the plot#will take off his shirt and he looks like some dude at the beach#these are the peak examples whose physicality is important to the story#let alone the droves of whatever looking guys and girls throughout the film#balding middle aged men in positions in which you would expect to find balding middle aged men#like police stations and offices#unremarkable looking middle aged women in the places you would reasonably expect to find them#it's honestly staggering#go watch a movie like the Peter Sellers Pink Panther or a 1960s James Bond movie and be astonished
