You know admittedly I didn't really understand (black) rap until I listened to Brotha Lynch Hung and started really breaking down the motivations behind the lyrics. How Lynch as a character is conflicted between his loyalties as a gang member and as human. How he wants to leave his dangerous neighbourhood but also feels guilt over that desire. His sadness over the loss of fellow friends either through prison or their literal deaths; how he is terrified that he is going to end up just like them. His constant need to dull the pain and fear with marijuana and alcohol just to get through the dark days. How society has metaphorically cannibalised his friends and family but he's aware that he is a part of that problem too. He postures as a "psycho" in order to justify his actions but he knows deep down that this isn't who he is or who he wants to be. He laments how he was raised without a God to keep him and his accountable but that he doesn't know any other way. Lynch is a tragic character that I really feel for, despite never sharing his experiences; I think that's the power of music though if you only give it a chance to effect you.

I guess my point here is that if you approach music more like one approaches a television show, it really makes the music more interesting.
