The word itself seemed incomprehensible to the punctual blond from Twinleaf Town, but here he was: racing down unfamiliar streets while looking at his map every three steps. Honestly, a Gym located at the base of a giant tree shouldn’t have been so hard to find…so why was he so lost?
Barry was a man of many whims–and scratch-able itches. Just a few days earlier, he had returned to Kalos on a whim, and just this morning, he had begun to itch for some good ol’ fashioned Pokemon battling. Unfortunately, this particular locale–Laverre, to be exact–responded to his battle lust with serenity, tranquility, and the gentle kiss of a spring breeze. Forgetting his itch, Barry wandered around the beautiful city instead–it was pristine, almost to the point of creepiness.
Valerie was surprised to see a rather panicked looking boy had just run into her. Or did she run into him? The first thing she noticed was his hair. It was pretty all over, as if this boy hadn’t the time to groom himself before finding himself at the closed and locked doors of the Laverre City Gym.
In no time at all, he was now basically on his knees begging her to introduce him to the gym leader, to let him inside for a battle. “All the way from Sinnoh, hm...?“ Valerie said, looking down at him, and watching him begin to stand up again. What an odd child, she thought.
He introduced himself. “Ah, Barry,“ Valerie said, bowing to him. “Runner-up champion of Sinnoh, are you? That is...“ She raised a sleeved hand up to her mouth, to hide her pleased smile, “Most interesting!“ Valerie finished her sentence with a giggle. He would be surprised, and maybe embarrassed, when she told him.
“I will formally introduce myself, as well,“ Valerie said softly, raising her arms to her sides, giving her costume it’s signature fairy wing look. “My named is Valerie...“
“The Gym Leader here in Laverre City.“ She had a sinister look in her eyes when she said it. She then cleared her throat. “I would love to have a battle with you, dear Barry, but as it is past my Gyms hours, you must do something for me in return first.“ He seemed adamant on battling her right now, so she figured dragging him to the cafe would be fine.
“I am rather tired, it was a busy day. So I would like to go grab a nice cup of tea from the cafe not too far from here, if you don’t mind. Then, if you are still up for it,“ She smiled, “we can have a proper gym battle.“
Trained habit always made Will maintain a keen awareness of his surroundings, so he took immediate notice of the girl who entered the shop after him. His mask allowed him a small level of secrecy with regard to where he decided to look, so he couldn’t help but sneak an extra glance at her outfit.
Valerie found herself giving the man a rather delighted smile. It had been a while since she worked on clothes so beautiful that weren’t made by her own hands. Of course, she had the pleasure of mending Siebold’s outfits, but she had custom made those for him herself, so it wasn’t quite the same. Her eyes were nearly lit up.
Valerie sailed gracefully through the doors. “Will, I am quite glad. Come, I will show you to the Laverre City Gym, where I do most of my work.“ She motioned for him to follow, walking along the lovely dirt paths of her town. They were going towards a large castle like building, with an even larger tree behind it. It was always autumn in this town, as is time itself stopped here; the grass a bit yellow, but cute pink flowers still bloomed. The leaves on the massive tree were gorgeous red and orange colors, and large pretty mushrooms grew all around.
Valerie stopped in front of the large castle doors of her gym, pulling an elegant key form her sleeve. “Here we are, Mr. Will,“ she said, unlocking the doors, and allowing him to enter first. The girl in the gym bowed, greeting them. “Hello, Miss Valerie,“ they said, and Valerie waved to them, smiling, letting them know they could get back to their work.
She led Will up a long stretch of stairs, and into the east wing.
“This here is my workshop,“ Valerie said, opening the door to another room. It smelled of crafting materials, and the walls were covered in those materials. Threads, fabrics, leathers; a dream for anyone who had a passion for making clothing. Dabble certainly was modest, especially at the sight of this room.
She sat on a stool, motioning for him to take a seat as well.
“Now,“ she smiled, “How would you like me to begin with this repair?“
“Oh, my! How fascinating! Are you from…Sinnoh? I have been there a few times on my travels, but unfortunately, I can only understand Johtoan and Kalosian!“
Valerie finds herself wanting to know more about this boy from Sinnoh!

The latest challenger had fallen. Valerie reassured them to do some training, and then return, but as she watched them go, she knew in her heart that this trainer didn’t have the nerve to ever beat her, much less the entire League. It made her mood sink to think about it. There had been few people who could best her these days.
“Well, Presea, that is a wrap for today I suppose. I do not think that I can handle much more heartache.“ Valerie said to her Sylveon. They always fell to Presea the Sylveon, who mewls as Valerie pets her. “Time for you to rest, my dear,“ and she returned Presea to her pokeball.
Valerie was in a hurry, now. She wanted to get home, order some dinner, maybe read a book. There were a few things that needed to get done around the gym before hand though. First, the battlefield needed to be cleaned up, which Valerie preferred to assist with. Next, the breeding wing of her gym needed tidying and the pokemon needed to be returned to their balls for the night. After all, no one was here to keep an eye on them in the night. Once that was taken care of, Valerie saw to the fashion wing, and went over sales and popularity of items with one of her girls.
This sort of routine wasn’t something that necessarily happened everyday, but nonetheless, it could be very tiring. Valerie sighed and left the gym, closing the big castle doors with a majestic thud, and locked them behind her. She turned, putting the keys away, but found herself knocking into someone, quite hard too.
“Oh! Oh my. I am ever so sorry. It appears that I am clumsy today as well as tired.“
He gives a wave of his free hand when she says he shouldn’t have gotten her anything at all. It’s an absurd notion as he cares dearly for her. Getting her her favorite flowers wasn’t a big deal to him and he hoped she enjoyed them. She steps to the side to let him in and he follows in behind her, shifting the other bag in his hand.
Valerie watched intently as Siebold opened his gift, and smiled when she saw the smile on his face as well. He didn’t smile often, and when he did, you knew you must have done something fantastic. “Oh, I am so glad you like it. Not that I thought you wouldn’t, of course. We do have similar taste in these sorts of things,“ she giggled.
She joined him at the table, preparing her own cup of tea; cream and honey. Sweet and light, just the way she liked most of the things in her life. Valerie stirred her tea, watching Siebold with big, dark eyes as he spoke of his seemingly less than stellar time waiting for challengers and people appreciative of his art. Valerie took a sip of her tea, looking concerned.
“I do suppose I can relate,“ She began, “I get many battle requests here as well, but few can best me. It is rather disappointing sometimes. I wonder how many of the ones that did beat me were able to make their way to you, dear.“ Valerie mused, placing her tea cup gently on the saucer it matched. “I would love to have a word with those who do not appreciate your cooking!” She huffed, snorting very slightly. “Some of us would love to go have a meal prepared by master chef Siebold,” Valerie laughed.
“But I just do not quite have the time. I suppose I put a bit too much on my plate at once, with designing, modeling, and breeding, all on top of being the gym leader. But I am not complaining. I love Laverre City.“ She smiled, looking quite happy as she lifted her cup for another sip, and grabbed for a biscotti. Valerie took a delicate bite from it before setting it down, and eyeing the box of treat he brought for her.
“Lessons, Siebold? From you? I would be honored. I know my cooking skills are worse than abysmal, I wonder if even a tutorial from you could save them,“ Valerie giggled. She used to feel very upset about her inability to cook, but lately, she feels a little better about it. After all, one person can only be skilled at so many things at once, right? Valerie had her set of talents. She was okay leaving the cooking to Siebold.
“I would love that, if you ever have the time,“ She wasn’t sure it would even be worth it. But she would never pass up an opportunity to spend time with one of her best friends.
Frankly, Guzma’s knowledge of the other regions was pretty limited to the minor contact he had with those tourists he’d stolen from in the past; Gym leaders…. not so much. He followed a few here and there, all of them having a singularity in common (bugs) but Valerie was one he really hadn’t paid mind to before. But her being here, seeing her in person, it was new and interesting, even if she were only here for simple reasons.
Valerie’s face lit up. “An abandoned megamart? That sounds...delightfully spooky!“ She started to giggle, and Regal put his ears down slightly, like he didn’t enjoy the idea of someplace that was haunted. “I would love to visit something like that! I will have to keep it in mind.” Valerie smiled. She was happy about this, Guzma seemed like a very nice person, and helpful too.
Valerie watches as Guzma’s own face lights up. How precious, she was thinking, as he talked about how much he loved bug pokemon. Valerie hadn’t seen too many bugs if she were to be honest. But she loved all pokemon. She giggled. “You are making me very excited to meet one!“ Valerie smiled, then allowing Guzma to lead her to a charming little area.
Alola really was beautiful. Valerie thought she could see herself staying here, but she loved her job at home too much. She would definitely be coming back often though. Now, Guzma had placed her, telling her to close her eyes, which she did. The thing that made her most happy...
Valerie thought about her pokemon. They were what made her the happiest. All of her pokemon had been with her for such a long time now, that any other answer just wouldn’t cut it. What came next didn’t take long. Valerie could feel small little puffs around and on her, and a very cute little buzzing.
She opened her eyes, and the look on her face totally gave away how happy she was. “Oh!“ She exclaimed, holding her arms up, watching all of the precious little Cutiefly buzz around her. “Oh, my, they are precious!“ She said, beaming. “They are fairy types, you said? I absolutely adore them!“ Valerie danced around with the pokemon a bit, all of them seeming to enjoy the interaction. Valerie, honestly, might have been a pretty good Cutiefly magnet.
She smiled, placing her hands on her face and giggled. “I am in love with them.“ She said, and then turned to Guzma, a light in her eyes. “You said you did not have a Cutiefly yet. So then...what kind of pokemon do you have? I would love to meet them too!“

Will winced a little at the volume as the radio host’s voice blared out suddenly from the tiny PokeGear’s speakers. Eyes were already directed towards him thanks to his quirky appearance, though, so the extra noise wasn’t going to startle anyone but himself. He recovered quickly enough, hurriedly turning down the dial with his one thumb while his other hand adjusted the small travel pack slung over his shoulder. His finger hung over the radio dial for a moment longer, tempted to switch to a Kalosian channel instead, but he ultimately forced the PokeGear back into his side pouch instead.
Valerie spent a good chunk of her time shopping for fabric, especially in the summer. There were clothes to mend, designs to sew, and supplies to stock up on. She was in between gym duties at the moment, and figured she would stop at the fabric shop right here in her home of Laverre to pick up some thread and other materials.
Her long, highly decorated custom furisode sleeves nearly trailed on the ground as she looked through different color and types of threads. Her head turned a bit as she heard the door open, the little bell ringing to alert those inside that someone has entered. Valerie tilted her head at the man who appeared in the door. What a lovely outfit, she thought.
Oh, but it appeared that he had a tear. The shop didn’t really mend clothes, only sell the supplies to do it yourself, really. They didn’t have enough staff to be sewing things for people. It was a small shop, in a small town. Valerie, being the kind person that she is, figured she could help. She was a master crafter, after all. She went to pay for her thread and supplies, and then approached the mysteriously dressed man.
“Hello, sir,“ she said, her voice pleasant and gentle, “I see that you appear to have a tear in your rather lovely clothing there.“ She said, eying his shoulder. “I regret to inform you that this shop doesn’t perform mending jobs, but if you would like, I could assist you.“
She paused for a moment. “Ah. I suppose I should introduce myself. I am Valerie, the Gym Leader here in Laverre City. I also dabble a great deal in fashion, as I am sure you can see.“
{I really love Gen 3! It was the first generation I really remember playing, and it was the gen i found my first shiny in. It was a dinky golbat, but whatever!!! Gen 7 is very close second tho.}
