I wonder why the Hazbin fandom doesn't pay enough attention to the fact that Vox's self-esteem is lower than the pits of hell and he is a walking emotional vulnerability. He pushes other Vees not because he thinks he is better than them. Quite the opposite. He genuinely believes that they are better than him.
Pay attention to Alastor's rage bites. He didn't say something bad about Valentino and Velvette, not even once. Because if he did, it would cause an impulse to protect them. So Alastor strikes another target. In Vox's inferiority complex.
Other Vees don't show any kind of reaction to it, because Alastor's words simply don't make any sense to them. Vox founded the VoxTech company; he is the oldest demon of them, and he built his strength long before Val and Vel arrived in Hell. He is the CEO of Voxtech; he manages all of Vee's paperwork. I'm pretty sure he does 90% of all work done. In the first season, in the "Stayed Gone" song, when Val and Vel hear the whole "He'd be powerless without the other Vees," they clearly make this face. It's so absurd that they can't even imagine that Vox could take these words seriously.
But Vox does take them seriously. He believes in it with all his rotten heart. He is definitely a narcissist: so confident and strong on the surface, but traumatized, self-hating, and self-dubious deep inside. He really thinks very low of himself. He is sure that he will never be enough, no matter what he does or what climbs he reaches; he will always be worthless in his own eyes because he is "broken from the start." So he tries to pull off the 'fake it till you make it' card by telling everyone that he is the strong and mighty overlord. And Alastor knows him too well. He knows all of his insecurities and strikes right on a nerve.
Speaking of Alastor, why does his opinion have such a big influence on Vox? Radiodemon is not only his idol and role model but also the first person he truly befriended in Hell. Alastor saw the real him, knew about all his murders, and didn't judge him because Radio Demon is the same. They found kindred spirits in each other. I don't think Vincent had ever met someone he could actually call equal. In his eyes other people always had been weaklings he must put in their place or threats that must be eliminated. Only in hell could he find proper friends. And needless to say, he is a man from the 50s that only discovered his own bisexuality. So his proposal to Alastor was a hell of a leap of faith. And he fell ruthlessly from the skies to the ground. Alastor not only rejected him but also laughed in his face, saying that they had never even been friends, and also publicly beat him up right afterwards. I wonder how he manages to be able to be partners with Valentino and Velvet after that. All his love towards Alastor grew to obsessive hate. Now all he desires is to prove to Alastor, but mostly to himself, that he is more than a weak and pathetic fool.
And that desire makes him an extremely easy target for Alastor's manipulations; Radio Demon clearly uses him as a puppet. All it takes is a good old "carrot and stick method" to control him. Mocking him every time he is nice to other Vees here, giving him a drop of admiration after he pushes his partners there, and ooola, Vox is completely wrapped under Alastor's finger. Under Radiodemon's influence, he becomes the worst version of himself. He insults and talks racist shit about his closest friends, pushes them away, belittles their work, tries to eclipse them publicly, and well, just acts like a huge piece of shit. And Alasstor reinforces this kind of behavior, like in a scene before the performance when Vox asks Valentino to be behind the scenes.
And when he finally breaks and is really going to kill himself and the whole pentagram city just with one purpose. He already thinks that he lost it all, and now he only wants his final dead wish to become reality. If Alastor was architecting his downfall, then Vox just has to take him with him. Vox literally thinks he lost it all: the other Vees hate him, his ratings are hitting rock bottom, all of Hell hates him now, and Alastor just hit him in the teeth AGAIN. He literally thinks he lost it all. So why wouldn't he kill himself on the high note so he wouldn't face the ruthless and humiliating downfall?
But there are people that DO care about him. I actually love that Velvette and Valentino are the ones that put him down in the end. Not because they hate Jim now but because they do want him to live (and they also don't want to die either). They are terrible people, but they are also a family no matter what.
I'm pretty sure after Vox truly releases how love has fallen, he will experience a huge reactive depression. All his fears became reality; all his nightmares became true. He is weak, helpless, and broken. He no longer has his power, his business empire fades before his eyes, the entire hell hates his guts, he doesn't even have his body, and as for other Vees... Well now he is dead weight on their shoulders, just a burden that they have to carry with them. They sooner or later would realize how useless and pathetic he had become and get rid of him. So why should he wait for it when he can solve many of the problems he caused for them in gratitude that they endured him for so long? Why wouldn't he delete himself out of existence? It would improve Vee's rating and also liberate her from a burden he became. Who will stop him from that? Only Val and Vel. They had a hell of things to discuss.
In the end I really wish that Vivienne won't make a joke out of him in season 3. He is such a deep and complex character, so he rebuilt my faith in the show. I really think I dropped it after the not-so-great season 1, but this flat-faced bastard changed my mind. Please don't make him a comic relief villain that will be mocked to the dead end, please. He does deserve a punch in his face from Velvette and Valentino, but also he desperately needs a big hug from them.
