Why read short stories?
Here is a direct quote from my best friend, Heather:
If I turned into a vampire and was given a library of infinite options, I would probably not read a short story collection until the sun had died.
Even though I guffawed at this (it was in response to me talking about my own short story collection), admittedly I once felt the same way. And, as it happens, the journey to discovering my love of short stories is also the journey of how I came to found OFIC.

“this fic will have only ten chapters” and other lies writers tell themselves
“this is a one shot, I swear” the infamous sequel
and the third part: “i won’t start writing this, I have to finish other things first”
“I can finish writing this” the fanfic no one asked for.
“I swear, that’s really the final chapter count.”
“i’m going to get this done and post it by tomorrow”
“I’m totally not going to start writing a new fanfic before I’ve finished the last one,” says the person who is now writing four.
“I’m totally in the zone to write this one fic. I can finish it in two days.” Muse is gone by then
“I have the last 20,000 words outlined, I just need to sit down and write them.”
remembering now that Penny* did this same lil smile when Eliot and Quentin were doing cool shit in primarily dissociative states. But listen Penny just loves cool shit. He rocks
Trust & Safety Phishing Comments
Date Posted: July 23, 2026
AO3 has recently seen a wave of comments claiming to be made by the "AO3 Trust & Safety team", notifying you that your account has been restricted. These claims are not true. These comments are not being made by real AO3 volunteers and your account has not been restricted.
AO3 volunteers, including the Policy & Abuse committee, will never communicate with you through comments on your work. All important communications from AO3 will be sent through the email associated with your account. More general announcements will be posted on our official social media accounts or published as news posts on AO3 or OTW.org.
If you receive one of these comments, do not click on any of the links in it, reply to it, or interact with it in any way. The links in these comments lead to sites asking you to verify your identity by providing payment information. This is a common credit card scam. AO3 does not ever ask users to provide payment information, and the Policy & Abuse committee will never comment on your works asking you to "complete an identity verification process".
If you encounter one of these comments or believe your account has been compromised, please view the instructions under the cut!

if you have a problem with any of the fictional pairings that i enjoy on the internet, for the low cost of $9,000 you can pay me to care about what you think
No matter how good your writing is, there will always be someone who doesn’t like it
Do NOT change the story to make it palatable to them. They will never like it. There is nothing you can do to make them like it
But there are so many people out there who will like it. And if you tone down the things that make other people not like it, you’re also toning down the things that make these people really like it
Would you rather have a story that’s loved and hated, or a story that nobody finds notable, and thus is easily forgotten?
Don’t tone yourself down to make people like it — tone yourself up. Make it so unapologetically you that instead of merely disliking it, they absolutely hate it
Because at least then you’ve left an impression on them, and how your story made them feel will stick with them, whether they like it or not
If you're a creator and you needed to hear this today:
You have no idea how many people lurk on your work. No idea how many times people go back to revisit your work. How big they smile when they simply think about your work. How fast their heart beats, how excited they get when they see that you posted something.
People are shy with their feedback. Sometimes it’s because they’re simply shy. Other times it’s because they assume you already know how great and talented you are. Could be both.
My point is, even if you barely have any likes or reblogs, don’t get discouraged. You have a lot of silent fans, but they are still your fans. Keep on creating. Because there is always someone out there who will love what you have made.
–Lev Grossman, The Magician King
Gather around. Story time with Uncle Eliot. This story is called “Eliot did nothing wrong but was chased by cannibals through the Neitherlands anyway.”

Queliot Reunion (Quentin rushes into Eliot's arms. Eliot embraces him with deep emotion.) (Painting)
Drawn for Queliot Week 2026, the Magicians Fanworks Extravaganza revival, @magiciansfanworksextravaganza
This drawing fits the themes:
Day 4 ❤️ XOXO, aka “Love, Eliot”—Queliot hugs, kisses, and/or ways they say “I love you” ❤️ Cuddling
(Brought to you later thanks to relaxed posting!)
Seeing Eliot's face on the other end of this hug truly completes the picture. Quentin flying into his arms--and Eliot looking like this as a result. Quentin just means everything to him. The rest of the world can wait. And he looks so moved that Quentin cares so much. Holding Q so tenderly.
Not only do Queliot express so much through their hugs on the show--they do in the books by Lev Grossman, too. The reunion hug on Muntjac after Eliot has sailed for a year and a day hunting for Quentin, and then Quentin appears (The Magician King). Or Eliot showing up to see Q in the townhouse and Quentin flinging his arms around Eliot so violently he makes El spill his wine all over himself (The Magician's Land). These epic hugs carry a similar feeling to this hug, for me.

Queliot Week 2026 has closed. (Did we see your entry?)
From June 15-21, we celebrated the love of Quentin Coldwater / Eliot Waugh of The Magicians (Lev Grossman, SyFy) with fanworks of all types for Queliot Week 2026, our revival of the original 2019 event. We had lots of themes to choose from! Here's a complete list. (If you ran out of time, please look forward to our next Queliot Week: June 14-20, 2027, when we'll welcome more works for all prior themes!) The full recap is coming soon. Please stay tuned!
This challenge took place on Tumblr and AO3. If you made something following the event guidelines and posted it from June 15-21, 2026, Eastern time, but we haven't reblogged it by around 9 AM Eastern on June 22, 2026, please check that it followed the posting guidelines (especially submit this form to let us know you made something). The instructions below also provide some troubleshooting information for posting on Tumblr or adding your work to our AO3 subcollection.
If you've followed these steps but you're still not seeing your work reblogged, please get in touch. We have an email address listed at the AO3 subcollection; you can also DM us here, use the Ask feature, or comment on this post.
Please help us find your post!
Please post your works to Tumblr and/or AO3 following the specific guidelines below. If you make something on another platform, please share a post with a link to that content on Tumblr and/or AO3.
Strongly suggested for both AO3 and Tumblr entries
To make sure we have the best chance of seeing and reblogging your work, and to help out your hardworking mods, please submit this form to let us know you made something.
Please be aware this form has two pages; the theme choices are on page two.
Please make sure to fill in both sections, part two is where you give us the work details and is very important!
When posting on Tumblr
Please both tag us: @magiciansfanworksextravaganza And also please put the following three # tags among your first five tags: #queliotweek2026 #mfequeliotweek #magiciansfanworksextravaganza
For each entry, please mention the event Queliot Week 2026, and be sure to name the Day # and themes you chose.
If you are sending separate entries from the same work (additional chapters, art, etc.), please make a separate Tumblr post for each individual entry, with a link to the specific chapter if you published on AO3.
Before you post: Take a look at your mention for us. Is it a live link? Can you click @magiciansfanworksextravaganza and get to our page? If not, try editing your post. If it's an AO3 share, position your cursor at the very end of the post, hit enter to start a new line, and start typing @magiciansfanworksextravaganza. While you are typing, a box with our icon should pop up. Click on that suggestion to link to our page. If you don't see the box, it won't link. Make sure you're typing in Rich Text rather than HTML unless you know the code to mention someone.
When posting on AO3
Please add your work to our Queliot Week 2026 AO3 Subcollection.
In the Notes at the start of your work, and at the head of any relevant chapter you are posting for this event, please let your readers know this is part of Queliot Week 2026, which Day's prompts you are using, and which themes you specifically chose.
Additionally (please do both these things), for multi-chaptered works, please indicate at the start of the work which chapters are taking part in the challenge so that readers can find them.
To post a new work, you can visit our AO3 collection and click "Post to Collection."
To add your existing WIP (also works for a new work), click "Edit," then under "Associations," "Post to Collections/Challenges," type "MFEQueliotWeek2026" and hit enter, then click "Post."
Please note: If you are adding your work via the Edit panel rather than posting to the collection from the actual collection page, when you type in the challenge name, AO3 is not going to offer it as an automatic selection. Nevertheless, as long as you type in MFEQueliotWeek2026 and hit enter, AO3 will add your work to our collection.
The full recap for this event is coming soon. Please stay tuned!
Eliot worries about Quentin (Painting)

I wish I could really capture that imploring look of concern on Eliot's face, like his whole self is tenderly pleading, Please be all right, Q. But I did add some hearts to the sofa, that El is sending Q's way.

This was written for @magiciansfanworksextravaganza's Queliot Week 2026 for the day 4 prompts XOXO, aka “Love, Eliot” and Cuddling. It was based on a lot of brainstorming @me1och and I did years ago (let's not count how many...) back when we first met (wow, it's been a while).
