Thoughts on Jack
I’ve been having some trouble getting into his head. Spoilers below the cut (as if this story will ever be published, but still)
tfw ur trying to write plot but ur brain only provides you with out-of-sequence snippets built on vague ideas and an endless number of potential outcomes that develop and branch out unnaturally over an unspecified timespan
my problem with writing stories is that i’d rather imagine it and play it out in my mind than actually put it into words
Birthdays!

Ben and Jack: August 20th
Stella: April 12th
More about Synths
After reading over my world building post I figured that Synths needed a little more explanation.
So, they have the powers of two different kinds of Magicians. It can really be any combination. There are no combinations that are more common than others (mainly because Synths are like... half a percent of the Magician population). And the thing with Synths is that it’s not always 50/50 split on their categories.
Also a note on where I got the word “Synth”:
In my original notes for writing the story they were originally called “Combination” but that didn’t sound natural to me and “Combo” sounded cheesy and reminded me of a fast food drive through. I then went in search of a better term to appropriate for my story and found the word “synthesis.” Being the science nerd that I am I immediately went to synthesis of a compound. But the word, it turns out, also can mean a combination. So I took it and shortened it.
Obviously they were called different things throughout history. Synth is just the most modern term used for this type of Magician.

Yay World Building!
This is some background information I came up with before beginning the story proper.
Magicians are thought to have disappeared from our society, now nothing more than simple con-men and children’s entertainment, using only parlor tricks and sleight of hand. But, there was a time when “magician” was reserved for those who were thought to have power over the elements, time, and even reality itself. The magicians were marked by symbols on their bodies: magical birthmarks that began looking no different from a freckle or a mole and grew into intricate designs and patterns spreading out from a central point. Each is unique to the magician. This Magician’s Mark can be found anywhere on the body and grows with the Magician’s power.
However, this growth is not indefinite, the mark will typically stop growing at between 3 and 6 inches across or in length. Growing outward, at least. Many become more intricate as the Magician grows more powerful. The Magician’s ability stems from this point and if the flow of magical energy is disrupted, such as by a deep cut or burn going through the mark, The Magician’s power will be severely weakened, if not destroyed all together.
Magicians tend to be solitary, though they can be categorized and do team up on occasion. These teams are typically made up or six or seven Magicians of differing categories. The categories are as follows:
The Illusionist—This Magician can warp reality itself making this disappear and reappear at will and wherever they choose.
The Mind Reader or Mentalist—Reads minds…duh. Typically, they need a physical connection with the subject of their mind reading, but not always. The most powerful of these can read minds through a proxy, typically something that has been held by the subject and then handed off to the Mind Reader.
The Clairvoyant—This Magician can tell the future of themselves or of others. Their premonitions can be symbolic dreams, outright visions, simple and strong feelings, or (in the weakest cases) frequent and strong senses of déjà vu.
The Seeker—This Magician can find other Magicians and is often drawn to them. They were quite dangerous during the witch hunts. This Magician seldom knows what they are at first.
The Enchanter/Enchantress—This Magician can draw anyone to them. They are the basis for the myth of the incubus/succubus. However, they are not always irresistible. Even the most powerful can be denied by a strong enough will.
The Elemental—These can control one of the (typically classical—Earth, Water, Wind, Fire) elements. However, the idea of elements tends to shift from culture to culture (e.g. Chinese Elemental Magicians use either Fire, Water, Wood, Shadow, Light, or Metal, but not Wind). Additionally, with the advent of modern science, the occasional Plutonium, Copper, Mercury, etc. Elemental shows up.
Finally, Synths also appears. Rarely, there are Magicians that have powers that fit two of these categories. While rarer, they are not necessarily more powerful than the other types. Synths do not ever fit into more than two categories.
In addition to the mark itself, many Magicians have unusual or almost unnatural eye colors. These can range from bright cobalt blue, almost neon green, gold or yellow, violet, or purple, sometimes maroon, nearly white or colorless, or even red or orange. The intensity of this pigmentation increases as their power does (often with age as well). Sometimes the iris will appear to glow when the Magician is using their powers.
A brief intro
I came up with the idea for this story when I was in London this summer and I saw a magic show (First and only magic show I’ve ever been to). It was awesome. There was a super cool intro video and it grabbed my imagination. I have a deep seated love for supernatural and scifi (and also I’m a sucker for romance), so my mind, “went, well what if...” And it’s taken off from there.
