At long last, here is my finished project for Carry On's 10th Anniversary 💚💜
I desperately want to live in a world where Carry On has an animated adaptation. And while I'm not capable of bringing that dream to life in its entirety, I figured I could at least I could put together product mockups for a fictitious limited edition Blu-ray release! So here it is, styled after the many wonderful anime boxsets by Sentai Filmworks~

HAPPY (slightly belated) 10th ANNIVERSARY TO CARRY ON 💛🩵
This was meant to be released on the 6th, but life does happen, and life did a woozy on me. However, I managed to fork out a storyboard finally.
This series means a lot to me. I read it when I was in a darker part of my life and it was just the right thing for me. It filled me with a wave of inspiration and hope that I didn’t know I needed. And the community is one of the nicest I’ve ever been in.
Thank you for bringing these characters into the world. Let’s keep carrying on.

Like Simon, this is waaaaaay overdue—I sent these out as valentines to a few fandom friends earlier this year :)
And because I’m a librarian and a big ol’ nerd, I actually catalogued the book and assigned a proper dewey decimal number, and figured out a way to print on legit catalog cards (we have boxes of the things still, from back in the day when a search engine was just your fingers, riffling through a drawer full of cards)
And yes. Gaylord was an actual company that made these.
I briefly wondered whether this project's title should be Carry On or Simon Snow. I ultimately went with the latter, with the former as a subtitle, as in:

Book One: Carry On
There were lots of motifs to consider for a logo. The sword was, of course, an obvious choice. As well as crossing the sword with a wand. I also considered putting some kind of nod to the Watford school crest behind it...
But those were too typical!
So I also played around with his tail, swirls of magic, the Humdrum's red ball, and the way Simon "goes off"...!
Simon's sword is such an important part of him, and it's a really cool bit of lore about the World of Mages, too! 🗡
After an absurd amount of research into the Oakeshott typology of medieval swords, I decided to just keep things simple by vaguely adhering to a Type XII sword, 🤓
I always imagine the Sword of Mages as having some kind of winged hilt, as is suggested in the cover art by Kevin Wada. Usually, I don't bother with trying to shy away from making it look too much like the Master Sword from Zelda, but I definitely didn't want any such similarities for this project!
I explored a bunch of possibilities, some more extravagant than others. Eventually, I roped my husband in, too~ He iterated on my rose-inspired pommel design and offered up a variety of blade and hilt archetypes to riff off of.
Prop design isn't something I've done much of, so this was quite the challenge! I'm pretty satisfied with the design I ultimately chose—which I'll reveal in a few days, 😉
It's October 2025! Know what that means? Another Inktober? No, fuck that!! It means this month is the TENTH anniversary of Carry On by @rainbowrowell ! 🤯
To celebrate, I've been working on a little personal project for the past several weeks, exploring the idea of "what if Carry On had an animated series?" On the 31st, I'll post the culmination of this idea, so stay tuned! 👀 (It's not an animation, don't get too excited.)

Alphonse
He has a lot of small ones littered across his body, but they're the most obvious on his hands
They're spattered across his knuckles. "Self defense" wounds from his days busting heads for Derek.
Seth
Similarly to Al, he has a few on his hands from playing muscle for Derek.
But the big ones are on his face. There aren't a lot, the wounds healed just fine, but they're there.
The most obvious is along his lip. There's one just to the side of his nose, another under his eye, another splitting his brow.
All of them came from the night he was arrested, and most of them came from Derek.
The one under his eye actually split back open when Derek sent his goons after him.
Kiss any of them and he cries, especially his knuckles. It's like an automatic tears button.
Auron
Would you be surprised if I said he has them on his knuckles?
Fortunately for him, they're mostly on his third digits or the very tops of his knuckles, so he can pretty easily cover them with rings.
There's a small one on his face, though. A crack in the perfect exterior. A small scar on his cheek. Kickback from a gun. He won't say where he got it, Faust doesn't know, and all Trish will say is that he's had it a long time.
Unlike Seth, he won't cry when it's kissed. He panics, pushes you off him with wide eyes and a rapidly beating heart. Give him a moment, maybe hold his hand. He'll apologize, profusely, maybe with a gift basket.
Charlie
Oh he's a one-man scar show
A couple on his face from beat downs from the other boys in Derek's gang
A few on his arms and legs from skateboarding accidents with Casper
A few new ones on his arms from his first bath with DD- a lesson was learned that day. Trim the raccoons nails.
They're littered across his knuckles too from the night Derek sent him after Seth- although he isn't exactly strong and he probably did more damage to his own hands than Seth's face.
Finn
He has a couple
Some on his hands from bad days where his shears slipped and he clipped himself. Nothing bad enough to need stitches and only obvious in the right light.
But there's one on his chest over his heart that he's always had and can't remember getting...
Faust
Absolutely not, are you insane?
He's perfect, look at him!
... well there was that one time.
He has a (apparently super common) scar under his chin. Some dumb accident from when he was a kid, slipped and hit it on something, had to get stitches.
Covers it up with foundation, it's not too difficult to hide.
Don't mention it to anyone, you never saw anything.
Lucien
He's got a few, Prince of Hell and all that
Can't remember where he got any of them, they're all pretty old
Probably some sinner he'd chosen to torment that day
That or a scrap with one of his siblings. They're ruthless, won't stop til someone bleeds.
Then again, so is he so he's not exactly complaining.
Jack
Only a couple, and none of them have really interesting stories
He's got a couple on his hand from falling on a treadmill as a kid
One on his nose from almost but not quite breaking it as a teen
And one on his stomach from an appendectomy. I just feel like he had one.
