impulse overtook her , as she asserted herself and ignored any common sense of boundaries and personal space . she all but tried to turn the man with a tight , a wanting grip on his bicep . that was , until anna was met with a resistance stronger than any door she'd ever known .

sobering , it dawned on the princess that she'd grabbed onto the arm of a stranger . someone she didn't know and who hadn't known her . but shame was not her , as anna rushed an apology . but , more importantly , she a clarified .

" oh . i'm sorry . you probably didn't find that , you clearly bought it -- obviously . or maybe not . maybe you made it , in which case i'm totally misjudging you right now and that's my bad . but all the same : i just . . . love custard buns . "

𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐖 𝐑𝐀𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐃 , 𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐙𝐙𝐈𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐘 , at the young woman whose voice rose and fell like a babbling brook — and with all of a brook's haste just as well . thor tilted his head to one side . he could not quite help the smile that curled slowly upon his lips , UNCERTAIN of which to be more befuddled by : her babble , or the touch imparted upon his person .

❝ ah . then i commend you your good taste , my good lady . ❞ thor laughed and spared a glance at his parcel . the buns had come in sets of three . enough to savor and to share . ❝ i was gifted these by a good friend who works with the charity . they often have extra . ❞ thor angled the bag for the girl to reach if she so chose .

❝ take one . perhaps it may remind you of home . ❞

\ / . Indeed, they had seen far worse than this. They had seen blood and carnage, gashes and dismemberments, things legends glossed over when recounting the 'glories' of war. Loki frowned at the sight. Not because it was ugly to him. No. What sickened Loki was how unnatural it was to see that wound on a being such as Thor.

Something open but not quite bleeding, and still never healing in turn. He felt the same the first time he had witnessed it on the Statesman. At the time, he had attempted to step in and provide Thor with aid. The most he could do was provide the proper tools and water when Thor had brushed him off.

In a quick examination, Thor had taken care of it more than Loki anticipated. But the last time was likely far too long ago. The skin was raw and puffed, red on the brink of infection from the dust and debris of battle. He had removed the patch with delicate fingers, careful not to cause more irritation upon that which was already sensitive.

❝ Steady on. ❞ Loki murmured softly, the ship humming around them in this fragile space. Slowly, he took the cloth and rinsed it in the warm water. He applied the soap and medicinal oils and began his work. Not a single word escaped him from there, for now was not the time to become distracted. Each stroke of cloth across the socket was laced with tenderness. Loki carefully wiped away the debris, the pus, and cleaned the area. The cold of his hand mingled with the warmth of the water that he hoped offered some reprieve. It felt as though the least Loki could do after placing Thor through yet another battle.

The work was thorough and soon enough complete. With a sigh, Loki reaches for the patch, cleaning it as well in the water. He offers Thor a cloth, untouched, so that he may clean his face should he choose to.

❝ You really should clean it more often. ❞ Loki said, handing the patch back to Thor with a nod. ❝ It would help with the irritations. ❞

𝐋𝐎𝐊𝐈'𝐒 𝐇𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐒 𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐆𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐋𝐄 . more than the offer itself , more than the wary undercurrent coiled tightly in thor's breast like a coil to set to spring , and even more so than the ease with which thor let him take bridle and reins , it was how gently loki flit and fiddled that so struck at thor .

so thor's breath came thin , shallow and carefully measured . lightning crackled and pulsed within . in but a moment might THUNDER BRINGER send shockwaves through an unkind hand . it would take but only a breath .

that moment simply never came . so thor sat still , with an expression blank and CARVED FROM STONE , save the minute flares that spoke of a tender pain thor kept veiled and pressed between his ribs .

thor took the cloth and the patch in hand , but he did not use them immediately . his brow knit together , and battled the torrents of raging winds that blew and howled within him . glimpses of memory scattered throughout time were carried on those winds . they howled like the winds atop the tower in new york . they gusted and blew about like the distant impressions of their mother and her warmth , felt through a fever's break or the onset of a prolonged Sleep . eventually , thor stirred from his thoughts . his thumb followed the layered pattern on the eyepatch's face .

❝ you have her touch . ❞

\ / . Mighty. Great. Loki rolled his eyes at the semantics, but was still pleased that Thor did take steps of his own volition. Though... Loki could not help but pause. There was a glimmer of something, a touch of fear in those eyes. They searched for something and were surprised that it was not there. ( What was there to be afraid of? )

Loki shook the thought, relaxing his features yet again, and chuckled in turn. ❝ What have I? ❞ He pondered, bringing a finger to his chin in mock thought. ❝ Nothing, I suppose. It would not bring you harm to humor me, regardless. ❞

He reached both shoulders of the behemoth and guided him down and down until he was seated upon the chair. ❝ When exactly was the last time you tended to the area? ❞ Loki swiftly turned attention to the basin, first washing his hands clean. He carefully used the soap to wash away the filth and stains of that place, ensuring that no harm would come to the perpetual wound Thor bore.

He could see his mother so clearly through the crack of the door as she tended to Odin. The washing of hands, the gentle touch as the patch was removed. The sight of the socket was always blocked in some form or fashion. But his eyes never left mothers hands. The delicate strokes of cloth, the way he held still for her hands, the strength of that trust was something Loki never forgot, even if now he did not understand it.

❝ Come then. Let us have a look. ❞

𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐑 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐀 𝐁𝐎𝐘 , there was no man more mighty than his own father . odin , who bore gungnir and his runes in hand with the frightening might of the all - father , and every all - father before him too . the eye that he had lost in the celestial wars was considered a TROPHY , even to thor at so young an age . a token not only of proof of his survival , but of his victory over the jotunar . that he wore a patch to signify that which did not scar was a show of pride towards their people . for tales would reach the farthest corners of asgard and beyond to the nine realms .

what only a select few of odin's house knew was that the patch was worn for a far more practical purpose : to cover a terrible wound that did not heal , for it had been earned while facing the FULL MIGHT of the giant king laufey , and the terrible , eternal winter held within laufey's casket . thor did not boast the honor of a wound earned in victory . he only bore a wound . one that ached STUBBORNLY when it was left too long to its own devices . one that was EASILY AGITATED . prone to infection , if left unattended . hela left her mark on him . her sword had left a bitter wound . one that thor GRIMACED AT as loki settled and took away his patch . he did not have a mirror on his person . but thor had tended to his eye enough times to easily imagine what it looked like . an agitated , puffy red with thin veins of necromatic power just beneath the skin . the socket itself could not heal over . THEY HAD BOTH SEEN WORSE . still , it was an ugly , brutish thing .

thor swallowed thickly and found himself looking anywhere but his brother with the very minimal space with which he had to look .

\ / . Loki scoffed, shaking his head and deliberately stepping towards him. Though they had reached a standing point between duty and personal conviction, this was something that he was not going to be swayed from. With a swift step, Loki suddenly stood between Thor and the console. He stared up at him, though they were not so different in height, and made himself perfectly clear.

Loki squinted, pressing closer to Thor's chest and staring at the patch. He did not have to probe or pry to make an educated guess that Thor was not fine.

❝ Then you won't mind if I look. ❞ Loki smiled, pressing a hand against Thor's chest and pushing gently towards the seat. ❝ The sooner you allow me, the sooner you may captain to your heart's content. ❞ His voice lowered, stern and laced with the quiet understanding of what Thor would rather be doing. This was a behavior that Loki knew well, though he could not say even in this world that it did not trouble him.

How much more could Thor carve out of himself to give to others? To people who would never do the same.

❝ Even great warriors need rest, do they not? ❞

𝐄𝐗𝐇𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐇𝐔𝐍𝐆 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐕𝐘 across thor's shoulders . grime , sweat , dirt and dust caked and smeared his hands , face , and armor . thor had long known that his wounds were few compared to the pains suffered by the many who had been taken . if he felt discomfort , he could only imagine the world of suffering impressed upon the many who did not deserve to suffer in the first . dirt , blood and sweat was not conductive to his eye . or rather the place where an eye should be but was no longer . it irritated him . but he was fit to manage until they had taken to the air and the ship was safely on its way , with the engines running and his power absorbed into the auxiliary and—

—when thor stepped back due to his brother's push , it was for fear of the effect on loki's hand should he not . ❝ it is good for us all that i am not great . i am mighty . ❞ even still , THICKLY - WIRED TENSION knotted through thor's shoulders . he looked down , SHARPLY , at the hand on his person . searching for — thor frowned . searching for a weapon , he realized dimly . a dagger . for blood and a pin - prick of pain only loki had strength to draw . thor took another step back - this time of his own volition - and let his fingers graze over the arm of the chair loki had swiveled towards him . his shoulders shook as thor let loose a HALF - EXASPERATED laugh . be it by loki's tone echoing their mother's , or his own split - second fear — thor could no longer tell .

❝ tell me : what do you gain out of this if i humour you ? ❞

\ / . The corner of his mouth twitched upon Thor's dismissal. It was no victory in Loki's eyes, for a victory only comes with the admission of defeat. But if he could be certain of anything, it was that they, the sons of Odin, would sooner perish than admit anything of the sort. Then again, it was not as though Loki fought him on this subject for personal gain.

However, Loki soon found what he was searching for in the drawers of the console. His fingers brushed along a glass bottle and a clean cloth. He hummed quietly, barely listening to whatever Thor had spoken of. Loki had his mind set to one task, and he would not be swayed.

❝ Yes, yes. Whatever you say, brother. ❞ Loki waved his hand, spotting a basin of water nearby. As a mouse that was gathering food for winter, so did he scurry about and collect all manner of items necessary for his mission. He rolled up his sleeves and set the items on a table where a chair stood close.

❝ I shall see to it that the wounded are tended to. ❞ His eyes look to Thor, stern and sharp but focused entirely upon the space where an eye was meant to be. With a quick flick of his wrist, he points to the chair, leaving no room for misinterpretation on his end. ❝ All of them. ❞ It was not a request.

𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐅𝐈𝐗𝐄𝐃 on reviewing the ship's path , thor did not pay mind to loki's movement save for the idle , habitual sense that loki was near . where each wire , cog , plate and gear buzzed in an endless pandemonium , loki was a cool , slow beat dropped in the center of it . a CONTRADICTION to all that thor knew . that had always been loki's way , though it was only in recent memory had thor uncovered the true depth of loki's nature . time had passed since then . a decade and more . time had passed , but not enough for his old heart , for so much of thor's life he had known the feeling of his brother's presence at his back , and when loki had gone he had had cleaved a hole in thor that was shaped just like him . thor swallowed , and waited to feel his brother's shadow move out of the pilot's cabin with him .

it did not .

raising a brow , thor turned to look at his brother , and could only frown , UTTERLY BEFUDDLED , at the sight before him . when loki spoke , the SHOCK of it was enough to bring even the mighty thor to an awkward , abrupt halt .

❝ i am fine . ❞

The storm had stilled just as quickly as it had arrived. Even when his emotions ran rampant, Thor had learned how to quell those storms. Long ago, Thor had been made into the vessel that could control the tempests. But silencing that power always came at a cost. The winds were never meant to be contained. Lightning must strike. Rains must be cast upon the earth.

No matter how strong the walls, the vessel will always erode into dust.

Leashing such power was a terrible tragedy in Loki's mind. There was no one else who feared its power more than the one who could wield it. Thor's eyes were always the first to see the lightning strike as it tore through flesh and bone. Thor's hands were the ones who pointed to where the strike was to land.

Loki could not help but silently scoff at the apology. ( Who was Thor to apologize for wrongs when Loki's were far greater than these? ) He would not accept it. Thor was not his keeper, nor his ward. He was is Loki's brother. The world was theirs to conquer together. That is how it was always meant to be.

❝ You cannot watch over someone who hides from you. ❞ Loki murmured. He loathed being tethered to a guard where his brother should be. His point had already been made. The same argument that he would rise every single time. Thor held onto duty as though his life depended on the notion.

He sighs softly through his nose, eyes glancing one last time over the steeled skin and weary soul. ❝ You may "make right" your imagined slights as much as you desire. But I do not see things as you do. ❞ Loki waves his hand, rising from his seat. He strides towards the console, reaching for the drawers in unhurried searching.

𝐀 𝐃𝐔𝐋𝐋 𝐀𝐂𝐇𝐄 𝐁𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐃 betwixt thor's temples . in the absence of his storm's wake , the pain of it was heightened ten - fold . it pulsed . throbbed . thor could ignore it on the days when his strength was not so faded . he could still ignore it now — AND WOULD . if only because it came and it went the same as an ocean's tides . came and went in familiar passing . so thor swallowed his own voice as he grunted against its near - blinding strike . he swallowed his words with it . BEGRUDGINGLY SO .

he simply did not possess the energy to fight him still . to be quite frank : thor did not know if he harbored within himself the will to .

neither sat well with him . and so , shrouded in his own misgivings , thor held the matter to his breast and folded it there , pressed between his ribs , where it would CUT EACH TIME HIS HEART BEAT and bruise each time he breathed .

thor swiveled , placed hand to hip , and turned his eye to the console , to the skies .

❝ . . . travel between this isle and the next will take some time . ❞ he said . ❝ it would be wise to split tasks between the two of us . i will manage the flight for this first leg of our journey . see to it you attend the wounded — yourself included . ❞

𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐖𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐒 of people whose fates were laid to waste by the goddess of death . thousands of names struck into naught but memory . the memory of asgard's king , no less , for it was his hand that penned each name , and his eye still burned with the BLUE - WHITE LIGHT of the holo - pad he had used to count them all .

the lunar coast was freedom itself compared to the IRON WALLS and FLOORS , pipes and wires of THE STATESMAN . at times , however , it was clear even to thor that the aevum realm merely sold a pale shade of the freedom it boasted . in truth , it was only A DIFFERENT KIND OF CAGE . it was this truth that his brother had long tried to tell him . and so it was this truth that thor understood too late . as usual . — yet even still , thor could not find it within his heart to hate the realm . not with all it had gifted him . his father would call thor's sentiment his greatest folly , and in far less gentle terms .

his father would be right .

. . . but folly had led him to embrace the company of friends like zhongli , who stood beside him now , with the weight of wooden blocks , carving tools , and candles in both of their arms . as the two men settled somewhere away from the crowd to prepare their offerings to the sea , THOR WAS GRATEFUL FOR FRIENDS LIKE HIM . for if love was folly , at least zhongli was silent about it .

❝ every year that the people of this realm host their candlelight passing , i find myself here , ❞ he admitted . the words skirted close to the grief in his breast . the words picked and scratched at a wound only JUST beginning to scab . it would not take much for the wound to bleed and bleed . so , thor shied from it , and added : ❝ it is a fine custom . though i cannot say that my home shared in it precisely . ❞

She tried.

Even as a small child afraid of thunder, she had tried to be brave. The heavy rain, the loud booming sound, and the screaming winds had been too much for her. As a child, way before her parents death, she'd run into her parents room crying and cuddling with them. With her adoptive parents, she stayed with Joey, who had been afraid of thunder, just like her. She tried to be brave for him.

And she tried to be brave now. Thor was the God Of Thunder. This was a part of him, and to be afraid of it meant being afraid of Thor. She wasn't afraid of hi--

Luna flinches, curls into herself a little more. She trembles and anticipates that first BOOMING noise.

"I'm sorry--," she says ever so quietly.

She musters enough courage to try to look at Thor, but her eyes must have been playing tricks on her. She thought she saw lightning, and a small hand latches onto Thor, tightly. "I'm sorry-I'm....I'm sorry."

𝐈𝐓 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐁𝐔𝐑𝐍𝐄𝐃 into the tongues and the hearts of all asgard that when their prince was born , asgard was struck by a storm ; the greatest of storms in all eternal memory . for centuries it was feared , between whispers within the house of odin , that thor was born a FRETFUL CHILD . for he had cried fitfully each night that the winds howled and peals of thunder shook the great palace of valaskjalf . it was not until his mother , ALL - MOTHER , and the wisest woman of all the realms , spake , and bid the realm understand what she long had of her firstborn son :

thor's first words were spoken in thunder , and so would be his last .

and so , for a very long moment , there was only the sound of rain as it fell from the heavens . it drummed along the ground and the roads and pelted along the shingles above their heads . sharp , pointed droplets that beat and battered . thor breathed , and curled his fingers around the whole of the hand placed in his . quiet , he watched her . quiet , if only because AT FIRST , even the mighty thor — for all of his bellows and bluster — . . . knew not what to say .

❝ i am not angry with you . ❞ thor said eventually . gently , he squeezed her hand . ❝ i only wish to understand your heart . so again i ask you : what is it that frightens you so ? ❞

𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐑 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐋𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐒𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐃 the presence of a storm , for its name danced upon the winds that nipped at noses , burst through fields and ran across streets . it was to be a great , enduring storm throughout the evening and into the long hours of night , and so the skies wore the dark , mottled grey of skies bound to thunder ; the hallmarks of a rain long past due . SKY - FATHER THAT HE WAS , thor was happy to hear of its coming . his heart of hearts rejoiced in its visitation , and he had long kept his eyes upon the sky with BAITED BREATH . simply waiting .

there were some that did not share his joy upon storm's advent . this , thor had long known , and each time that thor caught wind of it , he HELD HIS TONGUE on the matter . storms were a great many things . storms brought rains and life to all earths , and in the same breath of wind STRUCK FEAR INTO THE HEARTS OF ALL MEN . it was wise to be wary when a storm was on its path towards you . it was a sensible thing to remain inside .

but storms were not just thor's friends and his heralds . he was each drop of rain , each blustering wind . each arc of lightning echoed the flame of his heart ; THUNDER WAS HIS SPIRIT , and it was the spirit of thunder to be heard .

and so it was with some difficulty - some silent lamentation - that thor felt more than saw luna's quiet curl and the hunch of her shoulders , EVER INWARD . pressing lips thin , thor turned his gaze from the skies and to the young mortal . like so many times , thor bent a knee to face her on her terms , and although thor would not command the storm to hold its tongue this night , he did beseech it to WAIT — if only a moment more .

❝ you have never told me what it that brings fear into your heart , ᚱᚢᚾᚨᛘᚬᚱ . ❞

im so obsessed with how codependent thor and loki are. and like not even in the way we typically think of codependency- it's not like loki can't function without his brother, but more like. his identity is so deeply tied to who he is compared to thor, and next to thor, and no matter where he goes he's thor's brother and he's trying to get out of thor's shadow. it doesn't matter where thor is, that will always loom over loki. and he fucking hates that!!! he hates it so much but he also loves his brother but thor makes him so damn angry and ahhhhhHHHH THEYRE DISASTER BROTHERS

and on thor's end. this man is so full of love he wants to give loki the benefit of the doubt every single time. that's his brother!! his best friend!!! thor, of everyone, knows that loki has the capacity for good, but he also could never fathom what it's been like for loki, and as hard as he tries there's always going to be this disconnect between them. but he still tries every fucking time to believe in loki. he isn't stupid, he knows it's foolish, and eventually he starts being prepared for loki's betrayals, but nothing will ever overpower his love and forgiveness and desire for loki to be something better. he just. gets pulled down every fucking time.

Eyes narrowed at the swirling storm. Loki was in no mood to speak of the man who lived as a hypocrite and cast his burdens upon his descendants. Even he could recount the stories of their youth and the sacred duties that had been seared into the malleable minds. Loki had long ago taken a chisel to those teachings, while Thor only seemed to bury them deeper.

❝ You'll carry nothing in death. ❞ He could not take it any longer. The distant observations, the lies, the tricks he had pulled just to see that look upon Thor's face. The very same one he knew from so long ago. Loki would not stand for the slanders that Thor placed upon himself.

❝ You saved our people when she sought their suffering. Asgard is lost, but it is neither forgotten nor abandoned by choice. ❞ Loki need not say the name of the beast who slaughtered and murdered in the name of her own pride. It was upon the word 'feast' that his eyes widened in realization. The day of the feast. The conversation that had drifted them apart.

Loki groaned quietly, bending himself over as he threaded his hands through his hair. Complacent. Living in fantasy. We feast while they starve.

❝ You absolute fool of a man. ❞ He murmured, the weight of his own words burdening his shoulders. He could not bear to look upon his brother. The darkness under those eyes, the heaviness of those shoulders, the calloused, bruised hands, and straining muscles that trembled in secret. What stood before him was the shell of a god that called itself Thor.

❝ Even in his passing, you still choose to live by Odin's impossible standards. When do the sacrifices end, brother? ❞ When will you see that you have done more than any other man for these people? Even when you serve your heart on a silver platter to them, you find more pieces to cut away.

LIKE GRIEF another wave of turbulence shook the ship . the vessel RATTLED all around them . it shuddered and was BUFFETED by wild , unruly winds of thor's own make . this time , thor did feel it . in an instant , he drew still and cast his eye towards the DARKENING SKIES and uneasy winds . IN AN INSTANT , they were still .

yet static still buzzed around his person . lightning yet jittered and jolted , following the movement of thor's hands as they balled into fists and dropped to his sides . trailing the minute shake of his head as he GRIT HIS TEETH to the wave of vertigo haunting the wings of body and mind — where it would stay ; as he released a short , heavy exhale , and BRACED against the growing white - hot flash of searing pain would lance through skin and skull . ( it were as though he were six - hundred all over again . with nothing to show for his strength but a DIRE LACK OF CONTROL . )

thor tore his gaze from the skies and settled it upon his brother , then . he said nothing , for loki already knew the answer , for it was woven into every moment of their lives since they were bred and born : IT ENDED WHEN THEY WERE DEAD .

❝ when i have no longer made a mockery of our people's fates . ❞ thor spoke quietly , but his voice carried the rolling peal of thunder . did heimdall watch over their people from afar ? did he cast his all - seeing gaze to the stars , and had he found them ? if he was well , and their people whole , would thor not have sensed them by now ? could he not have mustered the strength to CALL OUT with lightning's strike to his final herald ? his final friend ? heimdall , who had served and watched under the reign of thor's father , and who prepared to serve under thor henceforth — he had seen all . every rise and every fall . what had he come to think ?

❝ in this realm , loki , that includes yours . ❞ lips parted . thor stalled . shoulders heaved . simply to breathe , THOR LABORED . his eye sparked , intermittently flickering blue - white and cerulean . thor swallowed thick and bid his heart ease in its cage to rattle . they must make peace . for of their family's vestige , they two were ALL THAT WAS LEFT . ❝ twice i have turned my eye from you . twice you have suffered for it , and so i have done you wrong . ❞

Loki had warned him? The words seemed to be carried further by the thunder roaring in the distance. There was no hiding his confusion over the statement. In Loki's keen memory, he struggled to find the source of what Thor seemed to speak to with clarity.

The airship rattled again around them, creaking metal and hollow echoes that shook his core, and Loki half stood. One metal coffin was the same as any other in his eyes, even if their false homes were not so far away.

❝ Thor, I- ❞ Loki began and bit his tongue. Oh, what he wanted to say. What he THOUGHT to say in that moment. He could not afford to be careless with his words ( as he had evidently done once before ), not now when storms surrounded the cage.

❝ Brother... I know what you have been doing with this vessel. ❞ Loki sat again, knuckles white from the strain that he kept to himself. ❝ You... you have slaved for days nay- months to return home... home to our people. Hungered, thirsted... and disregarded all rest for yourself, and yet you call yourself complacent?! ❞

He threw his arms in the air, an elaborate gesture. All he could think to do was laugh. It was absurd, truly absurd, that the man who gave himself away believes that he does nothing at all. ❝ I don't understand... when did this thought enter your mind? ❞

𝐅𝐎𝐔𝐑 - 𝐇𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐃 𝐀𝐍𝐃 eighty six days ago . thor cut his tongue on his teeth just to STILL IT from pouring out the words . a year they had feuded . a year , three months , and twenty - nine days they had been DRIVEN APART by foolishness . thor's own foolishness chief of all . in all of that time , loki had been the target of MEN - MADE - MONSTERS twice . in all of that time , thor had feared for him no less .

loki exasperated him no less either . he was no søt bolle to butter . his pride was not so FRAGILE as to bruise beneath a cold , hard truth . ( not much , anyways . ) the ship GROANED beneath thor's weight as the asgardian shifted and stood . utterly unable to sit still , THOR PACED GROOVES into the metal flooring . each step matched the beat of the dull , familiar throbbing that bloomed between his temples .

❝ father so often told me how there is no greater duty than to that of LAND AND PEOPLE . that i would one day understand the rights and the weights of the crown . ❞ he shook his head . hand flit to hand , fingers curling and digging into the pit of his palm . ❝ for years now , i have known . for years i have cast my eyes from it . shying from it , to return to another day . living in a realm of my own making .  and now i have sacrificed our land . i have brought suffering upon our people . ❞

❝ two years . two years , three months , and seven days now , we have been here . able to feast while their stomachs go hollow . able to rest whilst their needs go UNMET . ❞ oh , how thor's heart SPLIT APART for his people . he could recall them all . their harrowed eyes . watching him . a once proud , healthy people slowly growing GAUNT and WORN because his hands could not provide . how they held to his cape , yearning for scraps of hope . he could have sworn that the fabric stained their hands red .

The shadows lied to him. Loki was more than prepared for the words he expected to hear. 'You should have been more careful' was the first lecture that came to his mind. His tongue had already woven countless arguments and explanations, defenses built to fight for justice he sought for himself.

Now that the thunder had roared and lightning had shattered, the rain came down in the calm. Loki sat up straighter, brows furrowed slightly, and lips hardened into a thin line. He had prepared a chisel to break, not a bandage to mend.

Slowly through his nose, Loki sighs. Eyes cast down upon his hands (slick with oil, cut from the metal) that have fought and fought and fought for so long. What was he supposed to do with this? What words could he say that would be heard through the walls?

❝ I do not blame you, brother. ❞ Loki answered quietly, thinking carefully as he forced the words from his throat. ❝ In some ways... it was more fortunate you were not among the captives. ❞ He muses, shifting his body to lean on his knees. His fingers dance in his lap as he looks to Thor once more.

❝ You ought not be so hard on yourself. You are... not responsible for me. ❞

𝐋𝐎𝐊𝐈 𝐇𝐀𝐃 𝐀𝐋𝐖𝐀𝐘𝐒 𝐁𝐄𝐄𝐍 a terrible liar . and only ever when it mattered . breath fled from him , HEAVY AND HUMID , and fanned from flaring nostrils . thor said nothing . beyond them , dark clouds gathered in SMALL CLUSTERS . turbulence rocked the airship . wicked winds sent RUMBLING AFTERSHOCKS from bow to hull . somehow , thor had not seemed to notice . his eye had gone dark —  as though in moments it had consumed the howling of a HURRICANE .

star - sovereign spoke quietly . yet the thunderer could not rid his voice of the BOOMING CRASH held within each hard , measured syllable .

❝ yes . i am . ❞

❝ it was YOU who warned me of complacency . it was i who did not listen . ❞ so often , he did not listen . even now , it appeared that thor was consumed by a strain of old vanity and pride . thousands died for it . his planet had burned and had turned to dust for it . loki was struck down twice for it —  and to what end ? WHY DID HE NOT LEARN ? ( the airship RATTLED more dangerously than before . ) ❝ asgard's safety falls to me . no matter the realm . ❞

❝ 𝐈 𝐒𝐔𝐏𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐈 𝐂𝐀𝐍 understand it , ❞ thor was saying , with his head cast to one side so that he might catch a better view of the arranged proceedings . ❝ it is a difficult thing . all of this in the rain . ❞

t'was an aerconi wedding , this day . last week had been a rather extravagant showing involving POWDERS . . . over an infant . ( that one . . . thor was still coming to grips with understanding with THAT one . . ) he was explaining that he had been invited to oversee the wedding as a guest . in no small part as a THANK YOU for ensuring clear skies and docile weather .

❝ i do not mind it . ❞ thor paused . then , grinned , eye twinkling . ❝ — i get free refreshments . ❞

The battle had been hard fought, but won all the same. The rescued had all been accounted for by Loki's own hand, each one given supplies according to their needs. However, even as Loki checked on passengers, his focus was on the savior himself.

Now that their lives were no longer at stake, there was room for the feelings of old squabbles. Sure, Thor had come, but he would have come regardless of Loki's presence for the others. The shadows whispered, 'It was just convenient Loki was there.' And now he was being invited to sit beside the storm, as though nothing had come between them at all.

Despite his hesitations and reservations, he could not deny that he felt joyful to be reunited at long last. Loki said nothing as he took the seat, walking as quietly as he had entered and sank down.

❝ I can agree to that. ❞ Was all that Loki commented, a scoff echoing with the words. His eyes flickered back and forth from Thor's healing skin to the engine of the ship. Silence stretched between them, filled only by the constant hum of the engine that sailed them home. They likely would have stayed silent if Loki had not spoken.

❝ How are you holding up, Thor? ❞ His voice stays low, meant only for the two of them in these quarters. Loki's eyes stay focused upon Thor's face, searching for the cracks in the mask that Thor always wears.

𝐁𝐑𝐎𝐖 𝐊𝐍𝐈𝐓 . 𝐌𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐇 𝐏𝐑𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐄𝐃 . with one last look towards the control console , and a longer look out the front view , thor tempered himself and slowly — mindfully — put together his thoughts . entire seasons had passed since last they had spoken together , face to face . it had been far longer than that since they two had been on CORDIAL TERMS . it seemed to be the case ever since coronation day . now , with the hum of a ship all around them , and the idling buzz of rampant energy dying within , thor recalled clearly THE STATESMAN . . . . and , with it , all that had torn what little still threaded them to one another asunder . . .

❝ i am well . although i fear that i must be the one to ask you that , brother . ❞ his eye scoured over loki , searching for all that may be amiss beneath the grime and dirt and after - effects of battle . thor's eye clawed and clung to the sight of him in much the same manner that a beggar might cling and curl around the weight of A SINGLE COIN . like a man starved .

without giving loki the chance to reply , thor shook his head . HIS THROAT ACHED . his shoulders TENSED and heaved .

❝ loki , i did not know— . . . ❞ stopped . of course he had not known . for he was a blind man and a fool . THE WORST OF ALL FOOLS . how often must he lose his family before he learned better ? how many more times could he bear the TORMENT of his heart ripped from his chest ? sitting here , carving loki's visage into the bones of his memory , thor did not know how he had managed it at all . — how had he managed KNOWING THAT LOKI WAS GONE , and thor had done so little to amend the world's great evil in taking him ? ❝ forgive me . i should have come for you sooner . ❞
