I kind of wonder if the rise in people using yume/riako/gachikoi as a way to describe "being in love with a fictional character as though they're real" has to do with how terms like fictoromanric/fictosexual are seen as "cringe" labels, so using Japanese words is their way of cutesy-fying it and making it seem more acceptable.

Maybe it's just me but I've seen less and less people identify with the terms as I've seen more people use yume/etc. And if that's the case, it honestly sucks because being fictorose is cool as hell and I don't think anyone should feel shame for calling themselves such.

I obviously can't force people to use these terms but I do hope this post can at least give a bit of pause for thought, especially if it means not treating Japanese words like an aesthetic. what who said that

So can we talk about the orientalism that plagues fandom and is present in the selfship community. Yume as a term blew up because of it, it's why white people give their self inserts Asian names and then get mad when someone tells them that's cultural appropriation. Asian terms (and especially Japanese ones) are seen as a cool aesthetic more so than something from an irl culture
