“Thanks for coming.” Aly shut the door behind her before gesturing for her guest to sit down. “You don’t mind me picking your brain on this, right? I just can’t make a choice and my head is spinning.”
“No problem! You know I’m always up for doling out some advice. What’s going on?”

In that moment, blinking seemed terribly difficult and cats seemed especially confusing. “Uh… Slowly. Yeah.” She had no idea if she managed to blink slowly enough, but the cat did not attack her or anything. “Do… most cats have attitudes? Am I scaring him? I just want him to be a happy cat.”
“A lot of cats are, but not as many as you might think. Salem’s just a drama queen... king. Don’t worry though, he’s not afraid. The slow blinking thing helps with cats though, because it tells them that you aren’t a threat.”

Merrick clutched the tea to her chest, and stared right back at the black cat. She did not get along as readily with cats, so she was a little concerned about making the animal angry. Dragon did not budget from next to her, but Merrick could tell that the dog wanted to say hi to the cat. Merrick automatically accepted the hoodie, but kept clutching at the tea. “Thanks, you’re amazing. Uhm, is your cat mad at me?”
“Hm? Oh, no, he just likes to stare. If you blink a couple times, that might help though? Slowly, though.” Sure enough, the cat moved on from alternating between staring at Merrick and Dragon to staring solely at Dragon. “Oh, enough of that! She’s cool,” Mags informed the cat, who slunk away once more. “He’ll be fine. He just has a bit of an attitude,” she informed Merrick.

“Oh, uhm, yes, thanks, okay!” Cats were great, but she had always been more of a dog person. Animals not wanting immediate attention felt weird to her, but it was not like most animals went looking for attention. She went toward the cabinet as Mags went upstairs. It seemed that she was on her own with her calm dog and a cabinet full of tea. Which tea, which tea… She scooped up a box of lemon, and held it delicately between her hands, not wanting to take any in case it was special or something.
No sooner than Magdalene reached the top of the stairs, a black cat slunk past her. The cat made its way downstairs and rounded the corner to the kitchen, staring at Merrick. Magdalene was back downstairs not much after, holding out a hoodie to Merrick. “Here you g- oh! I See you’ve met Salem. And decided on a tea- great!” she walked over to the stove to pick up the kettle, taking it over to the sink. She supposed perhaps she ought to have filled it up and put it on the heat before going upstairs, but it was a bit late for that now.

“Rune magic?” He blinked, taking in what she was asking for. “That’s… a different take. I must say you’ve surprised me, Miss Monari.” Pushing back his chair, Lee stood and began moving out from behind his desk. “I’m intrigued to know why.”
“Oh, you know... for runes,” Magdalene answered, hesitating for a moment before continuing. “Protective ones. I mean. It can never hurt to have too many defenses up these days, right?”

“Biggest slab of chocolate cake they have.” She grinned and waited for Mags to come back. Mags always shouted, still to this day. She always waved Aly’s wallet away when she tried. But then Aly hesitated for a moment. Mags had been there for it all, drunk Alyssa, struggling-to-stay-sober Alyssa, maybe she’d be there for trying-to-pull-herself-together Alyssa. She turned the screen quickly so she wouldn’t have time to regret it. “I’m looking at college course. Nothing too complicated and I’m not even sure I want to go for it. I have a good job with Trez, why would I leave it, you know?”
“Chocolate cake, coming right up!” Magdalene promised, getting up to retrieve just that. “Okay, now tell me” she said as she slid back into her seat, stabbing her fork into the piece of cake in front of her. She forgot to lift the fork to her mouth, however, when she saw what was on Alyssa’s screen. “Oh my gosh, really? That’s great! You should totally go for it,” she encouraged her. She shook her head at Aly’s comment about her job with Trez. “You do have a good job,” she agreed “but that’s the great thing about community college- you don’t have to uproot your life to do it. You can keep your job, take a class, see how it goes... and who knows? Maybe you’ll hate it. Or maybe you’ll love it, keep going, and find out about this whole new career opportunity because of it. Either way you’ll learn something new about yourself, right?”

“Three! That’s a great amount. Oh, I don’t see them.” Merrick glanced down at her shoes. Two was one too many options to deal with, so she just left them on; that had been the first of choices, after all. “If you have tea, that would be lovely, thank you. And anything warm would be nice. Whatever you don’t mind getting covered in my scent or whatever. I have no idea how I smell, but I worry, y’know?”
“Oh, they’ll be around to investigate soon enough. Probably wandering around upstairs,” Mags explained with a shrug. “I’ll put the kettle on. What kind would you like? You can look around in there, if you like.” She pointed to the correct cabinet. “Oh, uh. A sweatshirt then, I guess? That seems the easiest to clean. I’ll go grab one.” She headed upstairs.

“What’s up, Mags?” She said with a bright grin. Whether she knew it or not, Mags was one of her favourite people in the town. It was probably due to the fact that she had literally grown up down the road from the girl. “Of course, you don’t even have to ask. Do you want a cake or anything? I was thinking about grabbing something to eat.”
"Hm, not much. I was about to ask you the same, though! Working on anything interesting?” she asked, gesturing toward the laptop. “Actually, hold that thought. You can tell me over cake, which I hereby pledge to never say no to. For two, if that’s what you were going to get? My treat.” She knew that Aly was a full grown adult, but it still felt weird to let her pay for things sometimes.

“She’s really good, I swear. Hold on a sec,” Merrick insisted, giving her dog a pat on the head. She then knelt down for Serious talk time. “Dragon, hey. No chasing. Look at me… No.” The dog gave her a look that Merrick interpreted as a good sign. “Cats are cool, but my girl will probably just try to herd them like some kind of meme. Nothing worse than that. How many cats, though?”
“Three,” Mags answered as she opened the door, ushering Merrick and Dragon inside. “You can leave your shoes on. Or take them off; either’s fine. Do you want something to drink? Something warm, maybe? I have tea,” she offered. “Oh! And I can get you a jacket. Or a sweater? Or a blanket?” She wasn’t used to having company.
When it came to doing things in her downtime, Aly didn’t have a lot of options these days. So there she was, sitting in a coffee shop with her laptop and some headphones, gazing out the window in a dreamy fashion. She was bored, that was the only way to describe it. Her brain needed some stimulation and the worst part was, she knew where to get it. Which was exactly why the Marston College subject page was up on her screen.
“Aly, hey!” Mags said cheerfully, sliding into the seat across from her. “Oh, um. Mind if I sit here?” she asked belatedly, though she was fairly certain she knew what the answer would be.

“Yes, this is Dragon, my dog.” And probably, at this point, her best friend. Dragon most definitely understood that everything was going smoothly, so she started to follow for a moment before turning back as if to ask Merrick if she was coming. Giving her dog a look (because that was definitely not how taking charge was supposed to go around here), Merrick hurried to catch up. “I don’t know if hypothermia was in the cards, luckily, but I could have been more receptive to other unpleasant things too. Thank you so much. Your home looks really cool from the outside.” She wanted to ask if the other woman had any roommates or family that lived here, but held her tongue.
“Well it’s nice to meet you, Dragon,” Mags cheerfully informed the dog. “Thanks- and no problem! Oh, I do have cats, though. They should keep to themselves, but Dragon isn’t going to go berserk over them, is she?” she verified as they approached, stopping with her hand on the doorknob.

Lucien could only raise a brow at the statement. Holy water. That surely had not been a thought in his head because it was highly impossible. “Do you honestly believe it was holy water?”
“I mean. Not really, a lot of the kids here are badly behaved. I’m just saying that it’s possible. Depends on who it was, though.”

“Oh, I’m fine. Perfectly fine, thank you. I just realised that my phone was on silent and I have missed an abundance of calls that may or may not have been important. Nothing unusual, trust me.” She looked behind her for a moment. “Why? Did something unusual happen?”
“Oh,” Mags repeated, doing a poor job of hiding her disappointment. While it was good news for Emma that she hadn’t seen anything unusual, it was terrible news for Magdalene’s investigations. She managed a half smile at the question. “Depends on who you ask,” she answered cryptically.

Lee blinked, observing Magdalene over his glasses. With a groan and a clutch of his head, he pulled himself up off his chair. “What are we looking for now? Don’t say something on the Occult, I’ve lost track of the majority of those books.”
“Um, I won’t say it then,” Magdalene answered, deciding not to ask how he possibly could’ve lost track of something so important. “It’s called Futhark: a Handbook of Rune Magic,” she supplied.

“Really? Yeah, that would be great. Thanks!” Merrick nearly moved to hug (read: tackle) the other woman, but stopped herself from getting to overwhelmed with enthusiasm when she realized that she had responsibility for someone other than herself. Nodding down at her dog, she asked politely, “May Dragon come in too?”
“Assuming Dragon is this dog, sure!” Magdalene answered, deciding it would be best to avoid any unpleasant surprises, like ‘Dragon’ actually being the name of... well, she wasn’t sure what. She led the way, gesturing for Merrick and the dog to follow. “I’d hate for you to get hypothermia on my watch.”
Merrick scratched at her neck sheepishly while her dog nosed around at the ground. “Hi! I know this is kind of a big ask, but do you have a jacket or something that I can borrow?” She glanced down at what she was wearing (not enough for the weather, which was fine if she was moving), and decided that for once she had some regrets. “We went for a run, but I seem to have locked my keys in my car, and, well, the locksmith is going to be a little while.” It was either she ask for help breaking into the vehicle, or try to stay warm. She worried that if she went inside, then she would miss the smith coming by or something equally disastrous. “It’s okay if not, though. We can just chat if you’ve got the time?”
Mags looked up from her just-emptied mailbox, startled by Merrick’s sudden presence. “I have one inside... do you want to come in?” she offered.
“I’m not hungover, you’re hungover.” Lee’s soft nature changed when he was sick. He knew that people expected a certain aura from him but the party had completely taken it out of him. Pair that with the monster headache that was rising at every second, Lee just put his sunglasses back on and held his frown. “I’m hoping you’re about to ask me a simple question because I can’t say that I’ll give you an intelligent answer.”
“I’m not hungover,” Magdalene countered, frowning. “Anyway, I was wondering if you could help me find a book. I don’t think it’s where it’s supposed to be.”
