What's the first thing that pops up in your head when you look at this picture? Attitude? Poser? What's she looking at? Why is her hand like that? We're always making assumptions. Sometimes we make them ourselves, sometimes we make them from what we've heard and sometimes we're making these assumptions because we're made to. In this photo I was simply just trying to to take a knot out of my hair. I know that, the person who took the photo knows that. But if I was to caption this photo 'I do what I want' or 'live for yourself' immediately there's a million ways you can interpret it. Basically what I'm trying to say is, don't fall for all the pretty pictures and sweet captions. That's what they want you to believe, not what they really are. We've passed the time where people were back stabbing and you knew exactly who they were. Now everyone is nice and sweet because that's the face they choose to show us through social media. #savitrigaru inspired look 🌟 I have always only known Savitri Garu as just an actress, an actress from the 'old movies'. Before watching the film #mahanati / #nadigaiyarthilagam that's all I knew about her. There were many critisms about the film; it didn't show everything that happened, they portrayed Gemini Ganesan as a negative character, the whole plot with Samantha was unnecessary, etc. Personally I thought the movie was just perfect. It showed the significant parts of her life that shaped who she was. After watching the film I felt some sort of motivation but at the same time I was disappointed in myself for not knowing this legend earlier. Samantha's character is basically a representation of every individual who has inspired been inspired by Savitri Garu's life. Who am I? #2 தமிழ். Tamil, the first word I use to answer 'what's your background?'. My language is one of the key factors what makes me who I am. Despite being born here, my first language was Tamil and when I started school I was part of English as a second language (ESL). I barely could make sentences in English. By the time I got to year 2 I was confident in English, but could only speak Tamil fluently. My mum gave me no choice but to also learn how to read and write in Tamil. She also managed to make me take Tamil as a HSC subject. Both my parents are from the middle part of Srilanka and we're raised in Colombo. My Tamil accent is noticeably different from the other Srilankans in my community. Throughout my life, till this point I always get picked out as being an Indian by most Sri Lankans because of my accent. At first I really didn't mind, but after a point it started to really get to me. A word or the way I say a word would instantly make heads turn. I used to just go with it if someone asked if I was Indian but then I was like wait. Why am I doing this? What's the point? Why am I taking my identity for the sales of others? I now only identify myself as a Tamil. It doesn't matter where I'm from Tamil is still my language and identity. Who am I? #1 I ask myself this question every time I'm faced with a hurdle in life. It could be the smallest thing like not being able to open a jar but when I ask myself this it some how gives me so much confidence. So who am I actually? Like I've said before being born and raised in Australia as a Srilankan Tamil has had it's fair share of hard ships. At a younger age I struggled to learn how to alternate between the 2 cultures. My family being very strong with their cultural roots I felt trapped, but as I grew realised there was no need for me to choose between the two. I am who I am, that's both an Australian with a strong Tamil culture. I learnt to embrace my culture and it's traditions. Even though there are a few things I personally don't believe or follow, I am highly influenced by my culture. #pridemonth 🏳️‍🌈 Love conquers all ♥️ #loveislove My mum always says if you love someone, at the first instance of being questioned ‘why’ you wouldn’t really have an answer straight away. She also says that’s a very stupid question and you should never ask someone that. But my point is why ask anyone why they love someone, why question love. It’s like asking 'why is blue your favourite colour’, you don’t need a reason. You can’t control who you fall for neither who falls for you. Love is love and no one should be questioned 'why’. It’s the 21st century and we’re finally at a point where individuals have the right to express who they are and love whomever. But that doesn’t mean all the gossiping, judgements and hate has ended. There are people out there who have the support, who have the courage to face the rest of the world. But there are others who are still struggling, fighting others or sometimes even themselves for who they really are. If a heterosexual doesn’t need to be shamed for their sexuality/gender then no one else should be aswell. Being born and raised in Australia didn’t hold me back from my culture but it does make life a little harder. As a child I struggled to learn how to alternate between the 2 cultures. I am who I am, that’s both an Australian with a strong Tamil culture. I learnt to embrace my culture without shame and it gave me so much confidence. It may not be the same scenario with #pridemonth but when you learn how to accept yourself for who you are, your confidence boosts up to a whole new level. Our community is judgemental, very judgemental indeed but that shouldn’t stop you. Never be afraid to stand up for yourself. Never be afraid to be true to yourself.
