Holly Black, The Prisoner's Throne
Peace be upon the daughter who helped her parents grow up. Accepted their cold shoulder, excused their anger, pardoned their mistakes, taught them how to be human. Peace be upon the sister who paid the price of rebellion. Screaming to her fullest, shaking like a leaf but standing tall, never letting the dictatorship go without a fight, paving the path for her siblings to breathe easier. Peace be upon the first child of an immigrant father. Aching to find their own purpose in life, firm in their own beliefs, contradicting generations and generations of cultural values. Peace be upon the girl who shouldered her mother's trauma. Swindled it into her own, morphed herself into an image of the womb she once resided in, immersed herself into troubles that weren't even hers, covered up scars that she couldn't even recognize. Peace be upon the woman who forgot who she was. So determined to be the savior of everyone, to fix her family, to nurture and love everyone around her. So deeply lost that she forgot she's just as worthy of love. Peace be upon you.
i hope that in 2025 u get to take more walks, read more books, connect with more people whom u love and who love u, achieve ur goals (even if ur goals are having no goals and just living in the moment), exercise fun hobbies, move from a place of self-direction, and weave together a beguiling assortment of beautiful little moments. remember that no feeling lasts forever. love u
and i actually hope u learn to forgive urself a little more and operate from self compassion rather than self flagellation. this is ur first time living - there is no rehearsal to any of this. u will live and u will learn. drink lots of water in the morning and dance to ur favorite music first thing. u are not uniquely horrible, but just learning how to live. u got this <3
i love to learn. unfortunately my brain doesn’t like to remember

If you lack discipline, you also lack:
Consistency Focus Progress Self control Confidence Time management Achievement Accountability Motivation Reliability Resilience Healthy habits Financial stability Structure Emotional regulation Work ethic Clarity Purpose
Discipline isn’t just about goals or career. It’s about you & the relationship you have with yourself.

“I don’t care if I am in a state of contradiction; I don’t want to be a philosophical genius. I don’t even want to be a genius at all, for I have enough trouble just being a man.”
— Albert Camus, Notebooks, 1942-1951
Capitalism is obsessed with death. The unconscious fear of death is what spurs it on. The threat of death is what stirs its compulsion of accumulation and growth. This compulsion drives us towards not only ecological but also mental catastrophe. The destructive compulsion to perform combines self-affirmation and self-destruction in one. We optimize ourselves to death. Relentless self-exploitation leads to mental collapse. Brutal competition ends in destruction. It produces an emotional coldness and indifference towards others as well as towards one’s own self.
