On June 4th and 5th, The Mahoning Drive-In Theater celebrates an actor as American as apple pie, with a weekend-long filmic feast of some of the tastiest treats from the career of one of cinema’s most beloved actors of the last 50 years, Tom Hanks! Join us for a filling foursome sure to satisfy, let your belts out a notch or two and dig in to some of Tom Hanks’ most memorable roles, from bewildered baseball managers, to lonely widowers and horrified homeowners, all presented on glorious 35mm! Friday night begins with the film that once and for all answers the question as to the propriety of crying in baseball, Penny Marshall’s A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN (1992), co-starring Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, and Madonna, chronicling the adventures of a band of female sluggers in the 1940s, with Hanks as their meager manager. Once you’ve done the wave and slid into home, we stay up late with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in Nora Ephron’s SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE (1993), in which our lovelorn leads dream of an affair to remember in the pacific northwest. Saturday night features two tales of home ownership gone very, very wrong, beginning with Joe Dante’s THE ‘BURBS (1989), in which Tom Hanks is joined by Carrie Fisher, Bruce Dern, Corey Feldman, and Brother Theodore, in a dark dive into suburban paranoia and possible neighborhood mass murder (it’s a comedy!). **JUST ANNOUNCED** The Mahoning Drive-In Theater is proud to announce our partnership for live-action retro Disney with a debut event on April 30-May 1: “DarkSide Of Disney”, a double feature celebrating the shadowy edges of the Magic Kingdom with two 1980s kindertrauma classics, RETURN TO OZ (1985) and THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS (1980), both presented on 35mm, direct from the Disney vault! The evening starts with a trip back over the dark side of the rainbow with RETURN TO OZ, starring Fairuza Balk as a disbelieved Dorthy, sent off to an institution to rid her of her “delusions” of Oz, only to be whisked wonderfully back to that enchanted land once more to save the inhabitants from the evil Nome King! Next up, we journey deep into the fearsome forest to meet THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS, featuring Bette Davis, Lynn-Holly Johnson, and Kyle Richards (sister of ESCAPE and RETURN TO WITCH MOUNTAIN’s Kim Richards, and modern-day reality TV star herself), in a supernatural thriller about sisters who discover an other-worldly entity in the seemingly peaceful preserve behind their house.
