whenever i see a post about someone wondering how an asexual and a sexual can be in a healthy relationship there’s always someone being applauded for saying well asexuals can have sex too or just because someone’s asexual doesn’t mean they won’t have sex but i have never, not once, EVER seen someone say well hey, some sexuals don’t have sex. you can have a full relationship without sex. just throwing it out there

Everyone in the notes saying polyamory and open relationships are great fixes for this too are missing the point. Ace people can have sex—and, yes, some enjoy sex. Yes, open relationships can be loving and healthy for ace people too. But ultimately you’re saying asexuality needs to be fixed by access to sex somehow. To quote op ‘you can have a full relationship without sex’. Your suggestion to find sex outside of the relationship with an ace partner completely misses that point.

A lot of productions (including the one everyone knows with a slime tutorial on YouTube) play Karnak’s last words as though his power cord broke before he had time to say his actual final insight and the ‘Your lucky number is 7. You will soar to great heights. Be sure to ride the Cyclone’ bit is scraps of his pre-recorded voicelines coming out as he shuts down. This is a valid interpretation, but I’m rather more partial to the way in which he says it in the official cast recording (and also in the production I watched live in London a week ago). In these versions he says it in a warm sort of way that implies that he is still alive and means it.

Think about it: he’s known the precise moment of his own death from the moment he became sentient, making it unlikely that he would be caught off guard by it mid-sentence. Then, there’s the fact that he ‘trades mostly in prophecies that don’t make sense… until they do!’, and if you look closely at his last words, they do seem to have meaning as opposed to being random:

‘Your lucky number is seven.’: there are seven main characters in the show (six choir members + Karnak himself), the meeting of these seven souls resulted in a miracle for Jane/Penny.

‘You will soar to great heights.’: the literal ‘heights’ of the rollercoaster + the ‘high points’ of life, a reminder that not all of life is misery and loss and that there are good things to come.

‘Be sure to ride the Cyclone.’: a meta-reference to the title of the show but also the show is built on the metaphor of life as a ‘ride’, transient and fleeting and often utterly uncontrollable, but also exciting and vibrant. The entire closing song is called ‘It’s Not A Game, It’s Just A Ride’ for that reason.

Karnak’s final insight, translated from the terms he’s communicated exclusively in for most of his existence, reads something like:

“Our meeting was serendipitous. Remember that there are things to come worth living for. Remember to live.”

And I think that’s beautiful.
