I think one big reason why we don't consider the stars as important as before (not even pop-astrology anymore cares about the stars or the sky on itself, just the signs deprived of context) is because of light pollution.

For most of human history the sky looked between 1-3, 4 at most. And then all of a sudden with electrification it was gone (I'm lucky if I get 6 in my small city). The first time I saw the Milky Way fully as a kid was a spiritual experience, I was almost scared on how BRIGHT it was, it felt like someone was looking back at me. You don't get that at all with modern light pollution.

When most people talk about stargazing nowadays they think about watching about a couple of bright dots. The stars are really, really not like that. The unpolluted night sky is a festival of fireworks. There is nothing like it.

I grew up with 2-3s (rural alaska for the win) and currently get 4-5 (rural town). The first time i lived in a proper city I was unsettled by how the sky was gone.

This is why I get sad every time I look up at night. The stars are gone. I tried to explain it to my friend, but he didn’t understand how it affected me. It’s so dull now. I’ve cried over it more than once. From our view, the moon has lost her friends. I need them back. The stars have led to odd conversations with my friend, many ending in me speaking as a nonhuman entity trapped in a human’s body. It’s disturbing to read back on, but it made so much since in the moment. They miss the stars, and, by proxy, I do too. It’s a craving for something I never had, and it’s a pain that I can’t stand.

One sign at a time, Baronet makes a statement to help people with $20 in their hand and a voice that rings across the nation saying “I’m here.” (source)

So not only did they take the small, hand-made signs away from homeless people but instead of just tossing them, they kept them. Not only did they keep them as some kind of homeless trophy, they actually went through the time, energy, and effort (funded by tax dollars) to tape them together, pose for a picture, and post it during the holiday season.

This is why people say that there are no good cops. Because there aren’t.
