When I first came up with the idea of classifying makeup as day makeup or night makeup for me, it had nothing to do with office appropriate vs. smokey eyes/red lips, it was all about, did the makeup work well enough for me to feel comfortable leaving the house with it on and possibly having to reapply out of the house vs. stuff that I can only really use when sitting at my dressing table with mirror and all of my tools and products before me. This was in large part because when I came up with this idea I did not have that much makeup and so I didn't want to use the "day makeup" at night because I didn't want to run out of it as I had no idea when/if I would be able to get a replacement. Turns out my husband follows the more is more philosophy of life and so using the night makeup at night was no longer as pressing because there is plenty of makeup to pick from and even if I run out of something, I probably have something similar to it in something else. It is actually really good that I am even thinking like this at all, because I put a very high value on my makeup, no matter how much it actually costs in the first place. Nearly all of my makeup and makeup related items were gifts, whether from my husband, my parents, his parents, other family, or friends. Even the things I picked out, were not really paid for by me, usually it is my husband saying, let's go to Target, you have $10 to spend on anything you want from there, because he knows I am probably going to try and find 10 things from e.l.f. that I want because I am very much a quantity person. I still value quality very highly, but when I look at makeup so much of it is so similar in quality that paying more than $1 for something really has to be mind blowing for me. Now there are exceptions and I have enough of the stuff from e.l.f. that it is harder and harder for me to find things I don't have until they release new stuff, and because I have so much stuff, I have a harder and harder time justifying it when looking for things to spend my $10 on. This is why now when I pick stuff out from the store, it is usually stuff I don't have anything like/that much like, or stuff that is from a line within a brand that I don't have anything from. In my ideal makeup collection I would be able to do a full face of makeup with each brand that I have products from because I also work under the theory that brands should be formulating their makeup to work well together and if things are formulated to work together, why would you use them with things they were not formulated to work with. In practice I don't think I can actually do this with any of the makeup brands that I own, but now you know more about how my brain works. I still go to the night makeup bag from time to time and stuff still gets added to it if it is something that I do not think wears well enough to leave the house in, but I haven't used it as my source of makeup to use after dark in a long time and I think this is a good thing, because it shows I am becoming a little less precious with my makeup. I still value it very highly because it comes from people I value very highly and it is still really hard for me to use things that I do not have at least two of, but I am slowly, very slowly, getting better. It has always been in my nature to be this way, and while I know it is not the best way to be, I am not going to beat myself up over the way I think, because I work very well within the rules my brain sets for me. I cheer for any process I make at being able to use more of my makeup collection, but will not reprimand myself when I put something into the drawers of things that are not in use yet.
