“I’m familiar with the concept…” Of what it’s like to be settled for. To be second place, second place to… amnesia, to the cruelty brandished instead. She was a secondary thought for so long, and perhaps that much had affected how she treated others. Perhaps she had been more poorly affected than previously thought. “I care as much as I can, Makise-san,” reclines back to respectful terminology. Being too familiar would perhaps set her off as it had the one she’d learned Japanese from in the first place. “I care… I'm trying to care as best I can, and it isn’t all that much. I’m not healed, I’m a broken person. I never… claimed to be good for you. I think I just failed to remind you of it,” failed to speak truthfully and without omission. “No, I don’t think that…” Her replies are weakening by the minute, and Utavel’s arms pull closer around her torso in attempts to hug herself, but it feels more like she's hooking into her flesh in attempts to keep it together.
It hurts, it’s all hurting. The fact she caused this in someone else hurts all the more, and it gives rise to anger at Utavel’s own actions. Kurisu turns away from her, and Utavel at least feels spared to be able to make what facial expressions she does without trying to maintain any form of veil or mask. It’s a relief in its own right, though it shouldn’t be. Kurisu is turning her back on her, furious and rightfully so. “No, you’re here because of you, Makise-san. Don’t sell yourself short of that much.” She thinks to keep talking, Kurisu’s back is easier to talk to than the unflinching gaze of a girl Utavel saw potential and love in. A girl that had the level of intellect to match and keep up with her, but with none of the brokeness she had been so severely clipped by. Oh, Kurisu, you did deserve better than her. Whether Utavel were a better person or not, this girl deserved someone who was not so broken from the outset. Not so different, so cruel, so violent in disposition.
"I… I-It matters…“ Damn her, and damn this fucking sniveling. ”You matter, Kurisu Makise, and don’t let whatever I’ve done make you think otherwise. I have no defense for my actions, were they intentional… o-or not, just… don’t become like me. If you have to leave me behind as an example of what not to be, so be it; so long as you don’t follow my patterns. J-Just… Just go, or I-I’ll go and… figure this out somewhere else where you aren't inflicted with my learning curve.“
“...Is this what you want?” She stops in her tracks, the heel of her left foot already off the ground. “Do you want me to leave? Do you want to be like this?” Kurisu’s voice is steady but thin, the effort she’s putting into keeping it from shaking is evident.
It’s already over of course. Kurisu has made her decision to leave, regardless of what Utavel says or does. She had to. It would be irresponsible and dangerous to enable this behavior and treatment to go without consequence, even if it were to mysteriously cease. The damage had already been done, and Kurisu had to do what was right for both of them, no matter what. A tear falls from her cheek and in the brief silence the sound of it hitting the floor is like a gunshot to her ears.
“Don’t become like you...?” She can’t feel her hands anymore but she’s sure that once she can the cramping will put her in agony. “You don’t have a patent on being broken. You’re not the only person who’s lost people you love. Who’s been forgotten by the ones most important to you. Who’s cursed to carry memories you would kill to forget,” she turns slowly to face Utavel again, furious indignation lighting a fire behind her eyes. How dare she behave like those were pains that only she could carry?
“I had my chance to be like you, Utavel. I had the choice to trap myself in bitter miserable isolation long before we ever met. I chose to make myself better,” it had been a choice, and not an easy one. It wasn’t possible to accurately represent how much easier it would’ve been to give in to despair and let herself whither away as the will to keep herself alive vanished. She could never describe how difficult it had been to get out of bed in the morning and eat simply so she wouldn’t starve. Nothing had forced her to do it. She’d survived because she chose to, nothing else.
“You don’t have to be the way you are Utavel,” had she been calmer, more rational, Kurisu wouldn’t have bothered trying to make an argument that she already knew was pointless. The logical part of her mind told her that there was nothing she could say that Utavel hadn’t likely heard before, and that if it hadn’t done anything then it certainly wouldn’t now. That part of her mind wasn’t calling the shots right now.
“You don’t have to live in your own misery. You don’t have to be so preoccupied with the pain you’re carrying that you can’t notice when you’re planting it in other people. The only thing making you do that is you.”
we’re almost 72 hours into pride month and neither kurisu nor i have kissed a girl and that’s criminal
starter call || not accepting
“ h - hey now, it’s okayー ” the quiver of her lip was met with awkward hesitation and raised palms; waving back and forth to calm her. it was to no avail, of course, and the longer her eyes bubbled with tears, the more he felt he might just follow her lead with a hiccup and a sob of his own. a stirring in his heart told him to stop floundering and act; a command that was nearly impossible to ignore, “ u-uum, c’mere. ”
no attempt was made to halt his tentative step forward, so he took another, bolder one, wrapping her in a pillowy embrace. through long, thin hair, fingertips massaged the base of her skull, “ i got you. ”
@makiscie
This is humiliating.
Kurisu hates crying, hates being seen crying even more. The speed at which she had moved through her life meant that she’d been constantly surrounded by those much older than herself, and to show anything that might be seen as weakness was just short of a death sentence. She’d had to grow up fast even before then, and it had left a part of her cold, empty, and dead.
The entirety of her rather small body stiffens when Sagi first touches her, every part of her screaming that she should push him away. Don’t touch me! She wants to say. Don’t look at me! Leave me alone! But her voice won’t obey her. Her muscles are so tight that she’s begun shaking by the time his fingers weave under her hair, but something about that feeling -- fingertips brushing the back of her neck -- pulls warm memories from the recesses of her mind. She shakes harder, but no longer from anger at being touched. Sobs fall freely from her lips as her hands scramble to find purchase on his back, desperate to press her face into something hard enough to muffle the noises she’s making.
She tries to say thank you. She does her best to tell him not to let go. By the time the words are filtered through the tears they’re no longer comprehensible. She holds him tighter instead.
rin tohsaka stole my heart and she didnt even apologize
❝ H-huh-? I-I wasn't asleep, plip..! I was thinking about Totobunny and wondering how I can fix their laws, plip.. ❞ Clearly was asleep, though.
Kurisu -- having fallen asleep herself some minutes ago -- jolts awake at the words, her attempt to keep hold of the papers threatening to fall out of her hand only serving to send them scattering across the room. “Ahg I--! I wasn’t sleeping either! This paper is just so fascinating!” She gives off an awkward attempt at a laugh while collecting her reading material from the floor. “But... If you’re tired you should get some rest. It’s not good to wear yourself out you know.”

“Why...?” Kurisu’s nails dig into her palms, knuckles white and jaw clenched so tightly her teeth have already begun to hurt. Why? Was it not obvious? Was Utavel so blind that she couldn’t see what this farce had done? Kurisu’s chest is filled with an aching fire and she feels herself burning from the inside out, feels herself crumbling to ash under the duress of a fury that she had felt only once before.
“Why? Do you have any idea how it feels? Did you ever stop to think about what your actions do to others? What they’ve done to me? Do you even care?” She lifts her gaze to meet Utavel’s and a hint of regret touches her heart at the sight of tears. She brushes it away. Was it not deserved? Did she not have the right to her anger and disdain? Utavel had hurt her. Had taken a pure love and gutted it, left only a thin shell of what had once been strong and flourishing. It was no different than what her father had done.
“Do you think you can just do whatever you want without consequence?” Her shoulders begin to shake as the emotions she’d kept buried all this time threaten to boil over. “I cared about you! I loved you! And you used me!” She can feel her own eyes getting wetter by the second but she doesn’t care. “I’m only here now because you stood to gain something, isn’t that right? You never wanted me, you just wanted to feel like you were good enough to be cared about, and it doesn’t matter to you who you get that from, does it?”
Kurisu straightens her back and meets Utavel’s gaze with a stare so unflinching she may as well be a painting. The emotion has left her, leaving nothing but a cold resolve. She had been hurt enough, she would stand for it no more. Chestnut hair flutters delicately through the air as she turns away. Utavel doesn’t deserve her time anymore. Maybe she never did.
“Stop pitying yourself and be better.”
“ i was just the one you settled for. ”
⇘ ✸ ⇙ — ♍
And something rare happens, Utavel doesn’t immediately rebuttal. Hearing the girl in front of her say that, alien eyes study her. Animal, slit eyes widen and narrow, Kurisu now a target of an indescribable and indecipherable emotion that remains sentinel in the room, in the silence between them. It begins as anger, that this human would claim to know anything about her feelings, about how she forms those attachments. How hard it is for her to even attempt to form attachments, and with that comes hurt, that Kurisu Makise would deign to belittle her, and herself, by saying this.
"How dare you?“ But had she settled for this girl? Had she tried to simply cling to anything resembling attractive, her intelligence being a draw first and foremost? She wasn't bouncing around with murderous intent or skills, and Kurisu was honestly rather droll by most troll regards, but Utavel Osborn tired of her culture and branching out had become rather frequent in her more recent romantic exploits wherever they withered and failed. But had she not been accurately called out, too? Utavel had hardly considered, refused to entertain, the thought that she'd stay with Kurisu, maintain any stability or long term relationship. What would she do that for? Settling for something nice was what she had done, Hazama was far from nice but she’d settled for his treatment of her in order to have some form of use, some form of routine. What had that really done for her? Did that not prove how little Utavel valued herself?
Utavel had hardly noticed the blue tears pooling in her eyes at this point and barely moved to disguise them or wipe them away when they began to creep down her face. “H-How… Wh-Why would you say that to me? What does that do for you?” Had she not suffered enough? Was she not allowed her own ways to figure out how to put back the pieces? Could she simply not be left alone in her self-destruction, no matter its costs? People who came around and stayed knew the risks, they knew what they were getting into when they decided to stay around her. “Then why don’t you value yourself more and leave me alone? Leave me to rot.”
