It might come as a surprise that we don't actually have campfires all that often. When it is just the two of us we don't always have a reason to make one. It has been incredibly interesting seeing the wide spread effects this past winter has had on the western United States. As we all know there were record breaking snow fall in so many places of elevation. Even though winter has past we are continuously finding places covered in many feet of snow that otherwise would have melted off by now. For instance, last weekend we tried to backpack into the Wind River Range backcountry in search of some remote lakes for some fly fishing only to find out that the trailhead parking lot was still totally inaccessible. Something interesting happened last night: we are currently staying in a hotel because the van is getting ANOTHER engine, which is another story entirely. After spending a few hours hanging out in our hotel room we walked outside and noticed the sunset was in full swing and it made me realize something. We don't just notice or catch sunsets on the road, we witness them start to finish. I do 't like feeling so disconnected from what is happening outside. That is why we are out here, to connect with our surroundings and enjoy what ever nature has to throw at us. Be it a killer sunset or to ride out at 60 mile an hour wind storm, we are here for it all. Colorado seems to be chalk full of abandoned mining towns. This one in particular requires an 11+ miles round trip hike (or an incredibly capable 4x4) to get to. The hike took us across a still frozen avalanche field, two beautiful lakes, aspen groves, and some killer mountain views.
