Dakota put on the finishes touches, applied some lipstick and grabbed a bracelet before giving herself one more once over in the mirror and decided she looked perfect. She stepped out back into her living room, grinning brightly as she took Malachi in. “Hi,” she beamed. “I’m ready now, sorry- let’s go!”

“You have nothing to apologize for.” He assured her with a smile, grateful for the time that he’d had to work through some of the building nerves. While they’d gone on a date already, for some reason he was ten times more nervous about this second date. “You look beautiful. And I am happy to wait as long as you need.” He stood up from where he’d been seated, and held his arm out for her to take.

To say Dakota was nervous was an understatement, it had been a week since their first date and she honestly felt shocked and incredibly lucky to have a. second. She had shuffled through a few outfits before the knock finally hit her door. She rushed from her bathroom to her front door and opened it with a smile on her face. “I’m almost ready I’m swear,” she giggled. “Why don’t you have seat, just gotta grab something and then I’ll be good to go.”

Dakota had been a surprise to Malachi, seemingly coming out of nowhere and sneaking her way into his life. It was something he’d been thinking over since their first date the week before, appreciating the smile that the thought brought to his face. He knocked on the door of her place and didn’t have to wait long before she opened it up. He smiled and followed her direction as she rushed back into her apartment. He stepped in and closed the door behind him, taking a look around, before claiming a seat and waiting for the other.

“Only one brave enough to take on the challenge. I’ll be nice enough to warn you, pool is what I was born to do.” Carlie did her best to not smile too much, she didn’t want Malachi to know how happy she was to be around him. In reality Carlie didn’t have time for feelings, not with work and taking of her dad. It was in her nature to hold back.

The only people she dropped her act with was her dad and Prestyn.

“Rack the balls up and I’ll pour you a drink.” Carlie smiled. If he knew how to properly arrange the billiard balls Carlie would know whether or not he was a serious pool player. 

Carlie turned toward the table and tipped the pitcher at an angle to minimize the foam. She handed Malachi his drink then smiled. “I’m impressed.”

He chuckled at Carlie’s words, shaking her head in amusement. “Well, guess I’m gonna have to try my best to keep up with you then. Wouldn’t want to let you down.” Malachi said with a grin forming on his face as he shrugged off his jacket, hanging it over a chair.

Malachi nodded in thanks when she said that she’d pour him a drink, heading to the pool table to set up the balls with the 8-ball rack. When they were set up, he rolled the rack a few times to make sure the balls stayed together before pulling the rack off and slipping it back into the table. “Hey, I do my best.” He joked, grabbing the beer and taking a quick swig. “Thanks for the drink.”

Carlie strolled into the bar and set her purse on the seat she usually claimed. It was the closest to the billiards table.  

A waitress walked up soon after, “A pitcher of 805 with chips and salsa.”

“You know me so well.” Carlie smiled and handed over her credit card. “Open a tab please.”

While waiting for Malachi to arrive she decided to warm up with a few shots. Carlie always put her quarters into a jar specifically for playing pool on the weekends. The fifty cent charge was the most reasonable price in town.

Malachi was excited to spend some time with Carlie. It had been a little while since they’d been able to hang out and he definitely enjoyed the time that they’d spent together. Soon after cleaning up the last few things in his apartment, Malachi changed into a pair of black jeans and a grey shirt, finding it much more appropriate for the night than he’d been wearing to clean.

It took him a little while to make his way to the bar, having never been there before, but soon enough he was parking the car and then heading through the doors. He caught sight of Carlie soon afterward and smiled as he walked towards her. “Hey, got some room for an opponent?”

Horrible, her body was screaming at her to say, but she forced a small smile on her lips instead. “Good, the kids have managed to calm down a lot and began sleeping through the night again. What about you?”

“That’s awesome. I’m glad to hear that. If you ever want a break or something let me know. Uncle Kai’ll be happy to watch the kids.” Malachi said with a smile. “I’m pretty good. Just trying to keep myself busy.”
