When Malglanaer was a kid in Edhellond, nobody had much time for him. Most of the grown-ups were busy being traumatised and emo after the wars, or just passing through to go West. When they noticed him, they generally told him he was Doing It Wrong, whatever "it" was at the time.
So it is not surprising that, in the absence of other young Elves, he started to mostly mind his own business instead. His favourite haunts were the archive towers high above the cliffs, and the sea below them. One season, he found an abandoned boat on a beach and set to repair it in stealth, hidden from his parents. In the beginning, he spent as much time inside as on top of the sea, but he soon became an adept sailor.
His forays in the archives were of similar success levels. He loved to read, but he had no idea which information was important and correct and which books were simply outdated or useless. The archivists generally turned their noses up at the useless boy, or shooed him out for fear of him damaging or destroying their scrolls. There was only one archivist who allowed him free roam of the halls, sometimes even opening a locked room to him. Though they rarely spoke a word to each other, Malglanaer silently harboured a crush on that archivist for a long while...
