I don’t think you’re ready to have an adult conversation about politics until you’re able to admit that there are things you love and enjoy that would not and should not exist in a just world. $8 billion dollar budget movies every other month don’t exist in a just world. New 900 GB AAA video games every year don’t exist in a just world. Next day delivery doesn’t exist in a just world. 80 different soda brands don’t exist in a just world.
All of those things come from exploitation on some level, and if you wouldn’t trade those for a world where everyone can eat and have a home no matter who they are or what they do, I don’t know what to tell you.
Man, this post makes me feel conflicted, because on the one hand, of the things listed, next-day delivery is the only one that DOES actually exist in the world today. The others are exaggerations, and while I understand the point being made, they do detract from it.
I understand—and agree with—that sentiment of, “I want slower deliveries by drivers who are paid better,” as one recent tumblr post put it. I absolutely agree with the idea that we need to produce and consume less as a culture, and that an actual substantive conversation about politics should involve willingness to relinquish the many modern luxuries that are built on exploitation.
I don’t think these are good examples of those luxuries, though.
Large budget movies are possible because consumers (and investors) are willing to pay for them. A large budget is actually a necessary component in making sure workers are being adequately compensated; the fact that they currently are often exploited by studios is a result of deliberate misallocation of resources, not anything intrinsic to the size of the production. Same thing goes with high-quality video games. As for releasing a new film/game every month/year, that’s only unsustainable because there’s only a handful of monopolistic studios doing it. In a well-regulated industry that encourages growth and competition, we could see tens, if not hundreds of studios producing big-budget films and games. And, with a well-compensated and socially-supported citizenry, consumers would have enough disposable income to support it.
Similarly, the problem with soda isn’t that we have 80 brands; it’s that we have two. And those two brands each own 800 different labels. In a healthy economy, these monopolies would be dissolved, and we could support well over 80 moderately-sized independent beverage companies producing their own sodas.
Same-day delivery, again, could be easily supported with proper allocation of resources. Currently, we have huge centralized distributors like Amazon exploiting gig-workers with slave-wages to ferry cheap mass-produced crap to people, and that’s what makes it bad, not the speed at which they do it. If instead, we had something like a super-robust USPS, with well-compensated deliverypeople working reasonable hours within a decentralized network of independent-but-cooperative suppliers, there would be absolutely no reason why you couldn’t get something delivered to you from the distro ten miles down the road within a day.
When we critique capitalism, and they respond, “Yeah, well capitalism made the cell phone you’re using!” our response shouldn’t be, “Oh shit u right,” it should be, “No, capitalism made the cell phone I’m using break after a year so I’ll buy a new one, and they use slave labor to do it while they pocket the rest.”
There are luxuries, and there are artificially-valued, mass-produced, built-to-break trash that are marketed as luxuries. But we don’t solve the problems of fast-fashion by saying, “Welp I guess I shouldn’t wear clothes.”
companies are delusional if they think consumers don't notice shrinkflation. less food in the package, less medicine in the jar, less whatever in the wherever, it doesn't matter where and it's almost always noticeable. like i just finished one box of medicine and we opened another allegedly identical one that we just bought and lo and behold, the four middle medicine segments were gone from the package. they took out four pills from the same sized box and sold it at the same price without any indication on the box other than the small number in the corner. ridiculous
I bought a carton of my favorite tomato soup last week and noticed that the nutrition facts looked weird. So I compared the new one to the mostly empty carton already in my fridge.
The serving size was the same, but the calories per serving had gone down by like 15. Odd. The ingredients list previously listed tomato as the first ingredient, and then water. Now water is first. They’re watering down the fucking soup and charging the same for it. I’m so fucking done.
This sort of thing is also really infuriating when you work in a kitchen or make bulk food for serving- in my field, everything is done by weight and calculated to the calorie (public school cafeteria) and all recipes need to be approved by a board before we can make them. They're standardized, by fucking law.
So we should know how many boxes of product it should take to make x amount of servings, right?
Tell me why for the last two years, every time we make mashed potatoes with the supposedly same dehydrated mix, we need more and more mix to reach our numbers? Supposedly, one carton should make 77 servings- it's made 77 servings for the last five years.
So why are we suddenly only getting 70 out of the box on average now? We're making it the exact same way every time. We make this recipe every other week. Why is it noticeably different.
We have to weigh everything to get accurate serving counts for governmental records and reimbursement from the government.
Why are the bags of frozen berries that say five pounds on every packags only weighing out to 4.3 pounds at best? We aren't draining them, they should weigh at least 4.9 because that's normal in the margin of error and the bags weigh nowhere near the difference to make it up. Now we won't have enough to make our target serving count bc we only ordered enough for about fifty extra servings like we always do.
Why is the chicken nugget brand we've been buying for years from the same brand suddenly way fucking smaller? The serving we use is 6 pieces bc legally we have to offer two grams of protein for a menued meal at the highschool level- so has our serving size changed without them telling us? The box doesn't say it's changed but we notice this sort of thing because we do the same menu every couple of weeks.
It's infuriating to have to make up the work because companies are trying to be fucking sneaky about this shit.
Even if we notice it's not like we can do anything about it since every single brand is doing it at the same time. What are we going to do? Overthrow capitalism?
BRAZIL MIKU!!!!!!! i love her design... im so sad i didnt get to finish her before braziltwitt had to leave.... i love you my friends i will find you in the next world
Current slots available: 5
Payment: Upfront, in euro. If your commission is equal to/above 40€, you may pay half upfront, and half after the last revision gets approved. Paypal invoice only!
FAQ down below!
Frequently asked questions:
How long does it take for you to finish commissions?
-Something like 2-7 days, depending on the commission (I'm also taking into account revisions here). I'll keep you informed of my progress and any eventualities that might slow me down.
Do you need references or character sheets?
-No! I can work with descriptions and design characters from scratch. References do help, but they're not necessary.
Can I commission more than one character per drawing?
-Simple companions/mascots are on the house (as long as they're smaller than the character, you're covered!). However, an additional character costs an extra 50% of the base price, and three's a crowd so I'd have to budget anything over two blorbos at once.
Can you do backgrounds?
-Yes, but elaborate backgrounds require budgeting. If you let me know what's on your mind, I'll name the price!
Can I use your art to make money?
-If you mean using my art as your YouTube persona, Twitch banner, brand mascot or something similar, yes! But let me know this is your intention beforehand, and please credit my work.
-If you mean printing or reproducing my art and selling it as merch, that's a tentative no. Let me know this is your intention beforehand so we may try to reach an agreement. It will definitely cost you more, heads-up. This also goes for AI training.
-If you mean NFTs, no. Non-negotiable, sorry!
Do you accept requests?
-The day I actually earn enough to make a living, perhaps ;w;
Can I get a discount?
-If this is your first time commissioning me and you ask for a shaded full body commission, you're in luck! You get a 50% discount. Also if you're commissioning me for educational purposes (as in, you're gonna use my art for a school project for some reason) or a charity event, let me know and I'll see what we can do with your budget.
¡Ay, pero esto está en inglés!
-No es una pregunta pero tranqui, que hablo español :D parlo anche italiano y entendo muito bem o portugués.
Terence and Scarlett, the youngest Deans in this Golden School's history. What kind of future do you think they'll bring?
I'm back on track my lovelies! Or rather, I never really left the AF train: I just needed some time to plan things out. I've sketched out the rest of the school staff, but I'll give priority to finishing chapter 5. Not gonna lie, I only finished these two first because I fell so in love with their designs I couldn't resist sharing them sooner!
Back in the early days of my production bible, I established the Golden School would offer other courses unrelated to guardian angels/devils; both the comic and S2 of the show inspired this concept. I came up with five faculties in total, with a pair of canon teachers at the helm of each. This is how Terence and Scarlett became my Academic Deans of the Tech and Support faculty.
Tech and Support is an engineering faculty: they're the mechanics behind mascots, vehicles like auto-spheres and motor-spikes, and pretty much every piece of angel/devil infrastructure on Earth. I chose Terence and Scarlett specifically because they're the least established teachers we see in canon. Simply put, they were the only teachers with enough wiggle room to fit the bill.
I took a long, hard look at what Terence and Scarlett were supposed to be in the series: the young, hip, hot new teachers in town when they first show up in the movie, the kind that make their younger students swoon and maybe stir some love trouble indirectly with their presence. I could definitely work with that!
Terence's original design looked like the kind of guy who brings an acoustic guitar to a college party, which is a very... 2000s kind of "hot". He needed an upgrade, stat. So I went on a quest and found that hunks are in vogue now, which is fine by me! And so a hunky engineer he became, with a high-visibility coverall, work boots, tool-bags and a helmet. He got to keep some stubble and his long hair (tied up in a ponytail for safety reasons) as a recall to his original design.
Scarlett's original design screams femme fatale, which is great for eye candy but not very practical when handling machinery. So I decided to gear her properly: strong-material overalls and shirt, work boots, welding gloves and safety goggles, protective horn cuffs, short hair and no jewelry (seriously, avoid wearing dangly bits like loose hair or jewelry when you're in a workshop). Properly geared women in STEM are, or so I'm told, pretty hot :v So mission accomplished!
While Terence and Scarlett's role in my rewrite is no longer to act as a romantic wedge between Raf and Sulfus, I ended up giving them shared traits with my Raf and Sulfus redesigns. It has a narrative purpose I won't disclose for now, but if you were wondering why they feel like grown-up genderbent versions of the protagonists, now you know.
Their new colors are pretty much a mash-up of their canon palette and my usual colors for angels and devils. I wanted to subvert expectations a bit however, so I gave Terence a red halo and wings and Scarlett blue horns and wings. They're the same hue as each other's eyes for entirely aesthetic reasons.
Honestly, it's been real fun so far to work on the teachers! I love working on side characters, there's more room to explore in terms of design because there's less expectations surrounding them. I'll do my best to finish the next chapter of I'll Fly With You as soon as possible so I can work on the rest of them, and maybe I'll get to finish more AFapril pages before April comes back around lol.
I've got three things to say.
One, no matter what universe we're in, Sulfus is always a heartthrob.
Two, no matter what universe we're in, Raf is always a bit crazy about it.
Three, I'd love to 3D-model these indoor backgrounds someday, render them properly. They're functional, but my hands can't keep up with my brain just yet in terms of detail and perspective. Let's see if I get better at it next year! :D
