Game companies hate emulation, but none of them seem to understand that a lot of us would just buy ROMs from them directly if we could. I don't want a fifth remake of Final Fantasy IV, I want to pay five bucks for the 3MB file you already made bank with thirty years ago. Nobody who wants to play something for the purpose of retro gaming is going to consider a $40 remake as the alternative option, and we're certainly not going to let the original dissappear. They're crying about opportunity cost for a product they're not even selling.

op i know you're probably talking about like, video games, etc, but this is also critical for research science - my lab has so much abandonware, either because the company's out of business, or the company decided to not maintain it, and it's a fucking nightmare. we have two windows 95 computers that are CRITICAL for performing experiments/data analysis because the software needed is abandonware. one of the main roles for a guy in my lab is to maintain these little dinosaurs because if they go out, we lose access to ~20 years of raw data for research. part of why is that these companies also make their own file types, and make it difficult-to-impossible to convert those file types without their specific software. by habit, i convert all research files to more generic versions (txt, pdf, tif, etc) so that i minimize risk of losing my shit, but some stuff can't be converted.

for example, we have a microscope that is perfectly functional, good microscope, but its software is abandonware because the company refused to maintain it. the company is still in business, still makes essentially the exact same software, but they made all of the old tech incompatible with new software to force people to buy the new microscope tech. it would cost a quarter million dollars to replace this microscope. this perfectly good microscope.

so like, i know a lot of people look at the original post here and go "well op just wants old video games to play" (which is valid! games companies should not be able to push shit to abandonware and then close it off) but also this is critical for like. biomedical research. if y'all had any idea how much basic infrastructure built on science relies on shit that is technically abandonware, you would probably be horrified.

there’s this term i coined in my friendgroup i call “the charizard effect” and it can apply to anything and everything, but it was born from me explaining my feelings about the pokemon charizard. the term is basically about how overexposure to something be it by corporate shilling or fandom prominence drives me away from really enjoying something bc i’m exposed to it so much against my will i become tired of it. it came to me bc i was ranting about how tpci does not, and cannot stop reinventing charizard, and how it is popular and obtusely included in almost every region, merch, etc in every way possible and it’s highly commodified.

i dont dislike the pokemon charizard, in fact i really like its X form, but i am exposed to so much charizard in my pokemon consumption that i cant be bothered to care for it in any more than in passing. this applies to a bunch of other stuff i’d otherwise be ok with, but i always just call this aversion phenomena “the charizard effect”

um! its part of a general au where everything that happens in limbus gets pushed back a year except some of the sinners still meet up. its generally just my excuse to have a bunch of pairups i never see/and or like isolated from the other sinners

rodya and heathcliff straight off the consequences of their impulses and emotional decisions and self loathing team up in a series of freelance work and get rich quick schemes to try and make something of themselves

ryoshu kills a higher up in n corp on a mission and meursault fresh off [the events of canto 10] helps her cover up the murder and just kind of ends up in her contacts list as someone who can work on short notice and wont compromise anything about the arayashiki project. she gets her kills he gets his thrills

during a grandmother grandson outing to witness some of the purges up close hong lu just kind of. finds yi sang all dirty and despondent and in withdrawal wandering around n corp and brings him back to hongyuan. jia mu is fine with it baoyu gets a playmate and the xianren get a special experience (personal up close first aisle seats to seeing a man struggle to hold onto his grip of life like a sick bird until he kills himself) (unless?)

just kind of adrift and aloft since kromer killed his family sinclair leaves calw and just Goes Back To School still in shock and kind of dealing with ptsd and all that. coincidentally is ishmael, also kind of in shock of her crew and lover all dying and deciding that after such a shipwreck her best option might be to go back and get a degree or a fixer licence and start her life over again in the same area. just kind of normalcy after disaster. until the rage consumes the both of them of course.

outis during her wandering after the smoke war takes shelter in a beaten up old lighthouse and ends up getting followed around by don quixote after she interprets outis' bloody and vague war stories as being tales of heroism. honestly just kind of the plot of o brother where art thou

faust poaches a homeless veteran gregor off the street and offers him sanctuary in what is limbus company still gearing up for the delayed inferno. still speculatory given the faust of it all but theres probably some part of her thats recognizing the timeline is a Little fucked up but all she can do is bide her time until dante tries to engrave the aspect. literally this image

lot of timeline issues likely but idk it sounded fun. for heath and rodya i imagine they're probably the ones who meet furthest on the delayed timeline by the sheer amount of ground separating t and y corp but they probably end up the tightest knit. theres a lot of resonant emotions in both of their backstories and its definitely a case of cannot trust literally anyone in this world but the person who's walked a mile in your shoes. when the bus Actually manages to get together theyre probably Worse at opening up then they are in canon though. bonded pair do not separate hostile to everyone else. i like to imagine how the sinners having some pre-established bonds and another year to mull on what happened to them would impact their canto and behavior during the inferno itself

the two types of project moon protagonists are Angela and Roland. all of them fall into these two categories. Ayin? Angela. Ishmael? Roland. Heathcliff? Roland. Dante? Angela. Despite being themed around abuse, familial trauma, unwanted burdens, and fate, Ryoshū is actually a Roland.

I never addressed these tags but not only do I want to highlight them for being incredibly entertaining, but also I'm so sorry. Yi Sang might just be the single most Roland out of any of the Sinners. He even has a bunch of people from his past popping up throughout the game to haunt his ass as an element of the main story. They even both have catchphrases and were part of a small, exclusive group of extraordinary people.
