Reforming Education in India : Need of the hour
Before we talk about the problems with current Education System, it is important to know the background.
Our country has achieved prodigy in Education since its inception. The famous Guru-Shishya Parampara is the soul of Indian Education System. In most ancient days, the Kings sent their heirs to Brahamans to master in Scriptures, Oration, Archery skills and others. The prince at the ashram (school) of Guru (teacher) was only a Shishya (pupil) and not the Kingâs son. He was supposed to do all work including the cleaning, arranging woods to prepare food etc. To be precise, the pupil in those days were kept away from any kind of comfort so that they may respect and empathize with those who are devoid of the riches of the world. And that is how we had Great rulers and Kings who not only ensured the progress of the state but also ensured that the citizens are safe and lead a satisfactory life.
This traditional system of Education saw its downfall when it was restricted to privileged on bases of caste and gender. Later, this education pattern was challenged during the pre-independence years of our country by Lord Macaulay. He believed that the traditional Indian Education had nothing much to offer, especially it lacked training in modern skills. So, the whole new idea of the current schooling in India emerged. He brought the concept of Modern Education in India in 19th Century.
If the idea would have been only to remove the flaws from the Indian Education System, it would have succeeded. But, it was far away from it. The basic idea was to train Indian minds to accept the English Rule. Though this could not be achieved during the pre-independence period but, today the Modern Education System has completely trained the young minds to follow the English Culture. However, it has been 69 years we have our own Constitution but in these 7 decades no political party could revamp the education system of the country that had its footing laid by a Britisher.
By no way we can underestimate the British Education System, as it has proved itself in every sphere. But, the question is, is it comprehending the need and utility of a progressive nation like us? Our Education system needs to be revolutionized at national level. It is the need of the hour where we need to STOP, PLAN, PREPARE AND EXECUTE our own Education system that suits the need of the citizens of the country.
A few ideas to bring change could be as follows:
Common School for 3 years to 18 years need to be divided according to age appropriateness. Since we are catering to a large number of population it is all the more important for Government to identify schools who are following good practise suitable for each age group and the experience of such schools must benefit our young minds. This will also help in reducing the crime rate in schools that has recently boomed. When we have divided school in small cluster of classes (pre-primary, primary, middle, secondary and senior secondary), then why canât we plan for special schools for each age group, who would not only deal with imparting education but also deal with the emotional side of the students.
Often, we see teachers complaining about rushing through the curriculum in the classes because of the limitation of time duration. Also, we often observe that students learn a topic in one class and then after exams they have still not mastered it as there is no continuity of topics from one class to other. So, once we divide the schools as per the age groups, we can define the final outcome expected from each age group. Like from Pre-Primary schools (ideally of two years) we expect schools to help students develop their motor skills, communication skills, rationalism. While at the end of middle school, we may expect the students to be completely aware of âSELFâ, where he knows what, why, how about his own personality and future. This will not only help us have aware individuals but also, they would have mastered skills by the end.
The Government might have encouraged the teaching fraternity with overwhelming pay scales but it is also necessary to ensure that the professional degree holders are suitable for the post of teaching. It must be a binding on the Universities providing professional degrees to ensure that the candidate willing to be a teacher must possess basic qualities of empathy and patience and are not driven by the external forces such as high pay scales or family pressures. The upcoming teacher must have the quality to sacrifice his/her own comforts for the betterment of education.
We need to understand why we want our children at school. Is it because we want them to live their lives luxuriously or because we dream of a peaceful and happy nation? In the light of emerging riots across the nation, it is obligatory for the educationists and policy makers to rethink on the validity of the existing education system. It has been felt that there is a need to change the education system, but the question remains unanswered because the policy makers are not educationists. They are not dealing with the everyday problems of the students, teachers and administrations. We need to focus on the student teacher ratio in the classrooms. In the era, where students, who probably are more tech savvy then teachers, we definitely need to supervise how our children are being affected.
It has been observed that in India, many parents do not contribute in the education of their children. The parents do away with their responsibility by either hiring tuition teachers or simply leave them at their own mercy. It is the need of the hour that along with teacher training the policy makers must think in the direction to have mandatory Parenting classes for parents of all age group with learned psychologist and educationists.
The youth of the nation today would be excelling in different fields but is certainly struggling at the emotional level. From Domestic Violence to Violence on roads, it has been felt that the youth is blindfolded. Hence, it has become obligatory to find alternate to day schools. As the day schools are unable to capture the emotional turmoil among the youngsters and hence is not able to provide any aid. The policy makers must promote Residential schools. These residential schools must focus on the personality development of the students and their emotional well-being.
If all the points are taken into consideration and dealt with sensitively at the policy makers level then that day will not be far when our nation will have finest population of the world and the county will earn the title of a HAPPY NATION.
