Atmosphere - The Lake Nokomis (Maxi Single) Review.
As far as the circles I run in these days, Atmosphere (and I suppose more specifically, Slug) are basically the bottom of the barrel. I get it, for the past 10 years, the dude has been straddling this weird corner where he mixed nu-metal and emo blasts with what are essentially nu-metal and emo raps.
And all this is came after some "classic" (though, dated), releases at the beginning of the 00s.
Yeah, "Overcast!" still sounds pretty fresh, but isn't representative of anything Slug and co. did afterwards. The "Lucy" EPs still have a bunch of great songs, though I can't say they are ever anything I want to listen to, and "GodLovesUgly"...well, I know why that record was so important to me in high school.
The major problem is that the 10 years that came after that, Slug has been essentially rapping about the same things, in almost the same way ever since. He's had a handful of good songs here and there, but everything just sounds too juvenile and silly once you've actually passed the age of 20. I mean, look, it could just be me - I feel this way about Eminem too, though there's no way Slug is half the lyricist of Em.
But while Atmosphere has had mostly awful releases for the past decade, 2008's "When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold" was a record that totally blindsided me, because it was finally a more restrained Atmosphere. The beats were uncharacteristically minimal, Slug wasn't screaming - it almost sounded like hip hop again, and it was kinda refreshing. So I know the guys can put out decent things here and there, I just don't expect much.
But I checked this out, this RSD release "Lake Nokomis", because I actually liked the lead single "Kanye West" which is eye-roll inducing at first glance, but is actually a pretty enjoyable, track. And the track after, called "Bob Seger" is pretty good, in the same way. It's still juvenile, but it's a bit more restrained. And "I Don't Need No Fancy Shit" is just vintage Atmosphere. There's a time and a place for this stuff, and it doesn't come often, but I won't switch these tracks if they came on shuffle.
But then "Bitter" might be my least favorite song of the year. Which is sad because it is a pretty cool little, super simple production. But the chorus and message. Jesus dude, get over it.
Oh wait, "Idiot" might be worse, it's sillier, the production is obnoxious, and the part that really gets on my nerves, and it's totally classic Atmosphere - the chorus sticks in my head. Are these lyrics I wrote in high school? Fuck this song.
"Prelude To Hell" is alright, but by the point you get to it, you've already exhausted yourself with two shitty tracks and three that are just decent.
So this isn't worth keeping, which I guess should have been obvious before I even tried. And look, I like Slug and think he's an easy target a lot of the time, so I don't try to slag on him and Rhymesayers music anymore, because this shit was really important to me growing up, but it's just...I changed, they didn't.
Cities Aviv - Come To Life (Review)
I recently tried to read the Tinymixtapes review of "Come To Life" by Cities Aviv, after slowly obsessing over the album for the last couple of months - and I didn't understand a single point made. I don't know if that's because the author truly found some highbrow analysis of the album that I can't fathom, or that he/she is truly making shit up, but here's what I get from that review: It's like...a pretty cool album, but not really THAT cool.
Here's what you get from me: This album is REALLY cool.
Now look, I've enjoyed every Cities Aviv album/mixtape that I've listened to; "Digital Lows" was a "wtf is this?" moment for me in hip hop and "Black Pleasure" had one of my favorite tracks of 2012: "White". What's more, is that the latter really seemed like the single record you could point to when Kanye was conceiving "Yeezus"...but let's not just assume.
The thing about Cities Aviv is he is an original. His music is in your fucking face, loud as hell and isn't really focused on lyrical themes - but it IS NOT party music either. It's hardcore rap, angel dust infused, smelling like stale piss accompanied by a light bulb that just can't stop flickering.
Maybe there is a message in Cities' music that I don't grasp - I wouldn't put it past him, he seems like a smart, interesting dude in interviews, but for me, listening to his music, his deep voice, typically at a shout, is another percussive instrument. It's like Lightning Bolt without the insanity (and you know, hip hop.)
It's 40-minute record that seems to go by much faster than that every time I listen to it, because it creates a blissed-out experience, with each listen. It destroys my car speakers, while my computer speakers don't do it justice, it has interludes, instrumentals, drone, dance tracks and lots of chopped, screwed and looped shit that keeps it clearly in Memphis.
It's one of my favorite records of the year, and I don't need to look too deep into the record to realize that.
probably my 2nd favorite song of the year. not a great performance, but it's dolly. DOLLY

Can't decide if I like or hate this show. Some of it is hilarious, some of it is really offensive. A lot of it touches on shit I wanted to do or DID do as a kid, though.
I don't want to get into the politics of it and won't. It's a dicey issue, but I love the times I've spent close to the border and have a deep love and affinity for the many Mexicans, Mexican-Americans and Southern Americans that I've had in my life. NPR (and Steve Inskeep in particular) did the Borderlands series last month and it's not necessarily groundbreaking, but it's a great thing to shed light on. You can listen to the pieces online, in the link I just provided, download the ones you want, or download the ZIP file I have at the bottom of this post, in which I put the 21 main .MP3's in order. I've enjoyed listening to them on the last couple of days of my commute. Again, it's not This American Life or Radiolab or really intense, in depth stories, but it's a pretty nice blend of this very distinct and culturally rich region.
I suggest going to This "App" page on the NPR website which is really well done and has amazing photos, and kind of sensationalizes the stories in a way that is effective.
And here's the 21 MP3 files all zipped up for you: The Borderlands
i need this poster.
This was much needed and awesome.
So far Spring has brought me one important musical act of note: The War On Drugs. Their album "Lost In A Dream" is almost 100% my favorite record of the year thus far. I've enjoyed their previous work and all, but the straight up Dire Straits and Tom Petty-ness of the record just really struck a chord with me out here. I can't even imagine what would be happening if I was still out in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, I'd been kicking around the thought of a "Spring" mix for the past month, combining some indie shit, some dad-rock, blues, country, etc and just making it light and a bit airy. I'm pretty happy with what I came up with. It's a mixture of old and new, obvious and lesser known tracks. Features mostly original shit, but has some great covers too (the new Dolly Parton album has a handful of great covers). Mixed with Mixmeister, sloppily, but enjoy.

Original track by Himanshu Suri for Parts Unknown: Punjab.
been listening to this damn track all week.
This is a mix I originally made on cassette tape back in 2002 or 2003 for my first car - a 1986 Chevy Nova that broke down as much as it worked. I took some tracks off from the original mix (Nas - One Mic, Talib Kweli - Get By and something by Saul Williams) and added a few others. It's supposed to be anthemic, it's supposed to be obvious, and 11 years later, it's still great. It's 20 tracks, 1hr, 17min and it's "mixed" using Mixmeister, to try and make it continuous and flowing (it's not perfect). Enjoy.
