You fell asleep in class once in the eighth grade. Your dream you cannot remember, but you remember him. He materialized like someone turning on a light in a dark room. He was suddenly there. His presence did not shake you. Instead, it was his words that made you tumble from your dream. Wake up, slugger, he says as he looks down his nose at you. God, you shiver because that’s not right. A crack travels down from your core and across your whole dream, it collapses and so do you. You wake. Your heart is pounding. You look around, everyone is staring at the board. The teacher is talking and you can barely hear her. She tries to meet your eyes, but instead you turn and find his instead. He’s sitting three desks behind you, slouching forward with his hand stretched out with a half hearted wave.

Tourists become friends, clamoring to the water from across the country, bringing their chatter, their business, their company. Whisper by my ear of their worship, hang signs over the fresh wash of paint, tell me about the cotton candy days that bled into carousel nights; that endless summer. Tell me the secrets of this little town, tell me the stories of the weird and wonderful things that happened there, too marvellous for coincidence, too fated for chance.
