Usually in these kind of situations the villain would simply possess the host, but the core specifically wanted "the smartest", which wouldn't matter if that was the case. We also learnt that it's comprised of "Amphibia's greatest minds", so the fact that it was looking for "the smartest" means that it might've been looking for the next addition. It also reasoned in the trailer "don't you think it's time to say goodbye to those childhood friends of yours", which it wouldn't need to if Marcy was just an inanimate vessel.

If that's the case, Marcy might be able to defeat it from the inside, using reason. Her strength is intelligence after all, so this might actually be the best position for her to be in.
