where did the interpretation of bill cipher as a sex pest come from?

to be clear, I have nothing against bill being super sexual and in fact enjoy it quite a bit, but it's a read on him that I've never personally understood the origin of. I'm not trying to argue it, I legitimately want to understand it because it's an incredibly popular characterization

i know everyone's going to come at this from a different angle so I would love as many explanations as people are willing to give ! my ask box is open for people who'd rather explain it anonymously

I think a lot of people in the replies have pointed out Bill's fratboy persona and constant sexual innuendos a la "I fucked your mom" jokes that feed into an idea of him as a sex pest. However, what's more fascinating to me is that, as with all of his negative traits, he can dish it out, but he can't take it.

And while this could all very well be another form of mockery and deprecation toward the hypothetical reader of TBOB and people interacting with him on reddit, it's also interesting to note that, if taken in earnest, he has many firm boundaries himself. It hints that the sex pest fratboy persona is nothing more than a ruse, a bit, a mask that he adopts to rile people up, but it's not his default inclination.

I agree with one of the previous rebloggers about it being a power thing. (He's Bill. Obviously it's a power thing XD) But the second someone turns it around and puts him in a position of vulnerability, the mask breaks down.

idk. obviously everything he presents about himself is made up to some degree. i think sorting through the lies to puzzle through what it could truly say about him is a fun thought experiment :D and different people will have different takeaways and interpretations

This is really interesting because if you assume bill isn't being earnest here, you come to the exact opposite conclusion.

For example, I don't think bill is being earnest. The questions being asked/the readers actions are clearly non-sexual to me, and I think bill also knows that the reader/questioner never meant to sexually imply anything. But he is performatively claiming that these comments were sexual in order to embarrass and degrade the reader/questioner.

And I think bill really enjoys embarrassing and humiliating people. That could be sexual on its own, but we can go even deeper, no pun intended.

We know bill has a tendency to project onto others, and he does that by dragging unsuspecting people down to his level. He's trying to convince others that they are pervs. Because the more he accuses others, the more he normalises that for himself.

And so yeah, it would imply bill is a perv.

All of the responses everyone else has given have been excellent and great reminders of a lot of things that slipped my mind, but at the end of the day there's so much evidence that he talks to talk but FUNDAMENTALLY CANNOT walk the walk

I already left a comment here responding to the original question but after re-reading it and looking at other responses I think it's actually really interesting how many different things people are talking about and kinda conflating with each other. So I think these are maybe some more specific questions to ask independently of each other

Is Bill hypersexual? (As in unhealthily preoccupied with sexual thoughts and/or behaviors)

Is Bill a sex pest? (as in engages in sexual harassment)

Does Bill actually have a lot sex?

Does Bill actually like having sex?

Does Bill frequently experience sexual attraction?

How comfortable is Bill with being viewed sexually by others?

Is Bill sincerely attracted to kink/sadomasochism, or is that also just a bit?

I think it's really worth emphasizing that sexual harassment does not necessarily imply any actual attraction or sincere interest in the person being harassed

hypersexuality has more to do with obsessive thoughts and lack of impulse control around sex than it does actual attraction or enjoyment of sex,

Sexual attraction and interest does not necessarily imply comfort with the actual act of having sex or being desired sexually by others,

And that interest in kink and bdsm can exist completely independently from more normative sexual interests and relationships

there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well

and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it

Gideon may never be as iconic as Bill Cipher but I still think he was very influential when it came to how he was written in season 2 because most of what we later see of Bill we can find in Gideon in season 1.

A con artist, snappy dresser, someone dangerously obsessed with a Pines Twin whom he wants by his side when he rules the town while resenting their sibling for putting them against him, a thief who wanted something in the shack for his goals, a liking for stars, rivalry with Dipper and a massive Stan Pines hater that gets defeated by him (thanks to one of McGucket's inventions) and sent to jail.

You could also say this about Stan as well because the parallels are obvious and they bring attention to them in the book and the website.

Gideon and Stan are narrative foils to Bill because as selfish as they were, they could put their own wants aside when it mattered for a greater good by helping others which is something Bill Cipher never could nor would.
