L had quietly gone to his room the second he entered the small apartment building. His foster parents were passed out on the busted-up couch in their cramped living room, so he assumed he would likely be, for all intents and purposes, alone for the rest of the night. They tended to drink themselves into stupidity, then pass out for days at a time. The only times that this cycle changed was when his foster father, Michael, would invite some of his buddies he had met gaming online over. Then, instead of just two people passed out on top of each other, it would add up to an upwards count of ten. His mother wasn’t any better. In the times that she was (halfway) sober, Misty would be working to support the family. Of course, her line of work wasn’t always exactly legal, but hey, at least it kept them under a roof, right?

L sighed. He didn’t really hate his foster parents, no, but he knew that they didn’t care one way or another about him. Hell, he’d even been out of the house for days at a time for some reason or another, and they typically wouldn’t even notice. It was something he had come to expect of them, and had reacted properly when he saw them in that situation. L usually didn’t leave his room for any more than to get some food, anyways, so it wasn’t a big change in his schedule to actively avoid looking at them. 

Groaning, L flung himself onto his ratty twin sized bed. Although most of his things were secondhand, he had taken it upon himself to keep his little corner of the world as neat and clean as possible: there wasn’t a spec of dust to be seen, and although many of his things were old and worn out, they were as clean as he was able to get them. His desk, although also secondhand, was tidy and sturdy, and he had used it for many years. Every other year, he would typically repaint it so it still looked good as new. 

Now, he had strewn his books upon that very desk, and the book on top was the odd journal he had found. After a moment, L hoisted himself up and glanced over the cover again, finding himself apprehensive to the thought of touching it. Biting the feeling down, he perched in his seat, not bothering to turn on the lights because it wasn’t nearly dark enough outside for him to have the need to do so. His fingers caressed the leather cover again before he flipped to the first page, his eyes quickly scanning over the information presented. What kind of sick joke is this? This is absolutely ridiculous. L rolled his eyes and tossed the book to the side and it tottered off the edge of his desk. Paying it no mind, he glanced to the rest of the books before pulling out one, intent on getting started on his homework. 

Tiny pinpricks of light shone brightly beneath him like a fabricated milky way as a pair of dark-coloured wings glided the Shinigami through the skies. Hopefully, the lad he’d chosen to pick up where Kira had left off countless years back in time had the same sort of bite to him, with a will stronger than titanium and relentless courage to match. It wasn’t your every-day human being that could simply pick up a notebook and jot down a number of names knowing every which user would end up biting the dust in a matter of forty seconds ensued, after all.

In a sense, Light had thoroughly calculated the odds, and if the lad didn’t jump into action on his own accord, the Shinigami could very well work his way there through a bit of coaxing – even if that required lying.

Unlike Ryuk, who had yet to see humanity raw and bleeding, Light’s had enough of it and the only thing that could possibly keep him from writing yet another name on his notebook was a person bright enough and with their sense of justice in the right place in order to begin rebuilding the kingdom of Kira.

As a side note, although many years had passed the young Shinigami was certain his arch enemy was still about, he deemed that was a bridge they’d only cross later when Near found out of Kira’s ultimate rebirth.

The battle wasn’t over yet. It’s never truly been.

Light fractionally raises an eyebrow over the request, unconvinced that using the bedroom that doesn’t have the convenience of an adjoining bathroom immediately entitles the boy to monopolizing other rooms in the apartment. Given that she prioritizes having a more private bathroom, she doesn’t necessarily feel a need to be stubborn about meeting the boy’s request should that be his ultimatum, but she won’t let it pass without a question. 

“You feel your bedroom is an insufficient size?”

Her skepticism is carefully filtered out, making the question deceptively casual – at least to any casual observer. While fervently territorial over an apartment with a roommate she has only tentatively agreed to is unnecessary, getting a clearer idea of other-Light’s temperament is an unquestionably good idea.

Both subtlety and keeping to himself in aggravating moments such as those were definitely Light’s strong suit, but deep inside regret had already started to set in like rot.

“This room is bigger than the other, and it has a bathroom. It’s only fair that I keep another to store some things,” such as his books, for instance, “that might make my room claustrophobically small otherwise.”

What was it to her keeping the study anyway? She could very well fit a desk and a bookcase in her room and still have plenty space to go about. His, on the other hand… Well, Light wasn’t particularly fond of complaining, but fitting a bookcase in there would make it rather messy, not to mention he would need a place to install his desktop computer at.

“It is, indeed.” At that the brunet was still located (with arms folded across his chest) and deep-rooted to the entrance of the young woman’s supposed abode, unwilling to budge until she at least agreed on being fair and square.

Yet again, L was bored. He had been forced to deal with the same dull, superficial people, ones who had about as much depth as a puddle after a rainstorm. Every day was monotonous and the same, and he just couldn’t wait to get out of the institutionalized prison called high school. 

Not that his home life was any less tiresome, but at least he was able to be by himself, instead of listening to the endless, petty conversation of his peers. Thankfully, he was in his last class of the day: advanced chemistry. L gazed out the window, half asleep and not even listening to what his teacher was saying. He’d read up on all of the content already, so there was no need to. His eyes focused on the clouds forming in the sky as his mind wandered, before something came into his line of vision. Is that a… notebook? He decided to go investigate after class.

As he approached, a jolt of unexplained loathing and terror ran through him. He ignored the shivers running down his spine and leaned down to pick it up, fingers brushing the words that were written on the cover. “Death Note…” He shook his head and stuffed it in his bag, glancing around to make sure no one paid him any attention before quickly walking home. 

Boredom. A feeling that, no matter the nature, would most likely set in like rot more often than not, especially when everything seemed somewhat lacklustre. From saviour to killer in the blink of an eye; had he been one to save instead and the end of his days would most likely burst in without even knocking.

Before recovering his memories Light couldn’t, honest to god, care less about whosoever’s name was jotted down on his notebook. However, it was upon hearing a morsel of his past as human from a fellow Shinigami that everything came back to him in a giant surge akin to that of a mental tsunami. Only then did his kills go from mindless to calculated, mostly focused on those undergoing deadly diseases that would only cause them to spend the rest of their days in agony until the last breath.

An act of mercy, one would say. To grant death to those at its doorstep, and yet, they pulled it through somehow – always against their will. A total amount of hundreds of years had been gathered in the meantime, but even so that didn’t seem to snuff out his need for justice… It was as though his thirst asked for water, but only sweetmilk could be found in the fridge.

“It’s time,” he mused, watching from the corner of his eye a plain white Shinigami with bones jutting out of her spine line keeping her beady blue eyes glued to the orb that displayed happenings in the human world as in a movie.
