Why New Horizons Kinda Sucks

We all love New Horizons. It’s been an integral part of surviving quarantine during this pandemic. It introduced so many great things, such as the ability to be any skin tone other than white, and some pretty great characters. But what if I told you that New Horizons…kinda sucks.

After New Horizons had come out, I had lamented that even in the beginning of the game, it just wasn’t... good as an Animal Crossing game. I’ve never experienced a sandbox game like this, a game that--as K.K. Slider used to put it, “you can do what you want, when you want”--instead has a ton of arbitrary baby gates mean to pace the players progression for no meaningful reason. I was shit on for wanting to enjoy the game at the pace I was accustomed to, and I was shit on for time-travelling because I wanted to see more of what the game had to offer, instead of wait for the game to feel like I’ve played by its rules long enough to give me another little taste. 

Animal Crossing has never, ever been a game that’s only crept the door open inches a time. As soon as you gain control of your character in the older games, that door fuckin’ SLAMS open, you could do whatever the fuck you want! Blow off Nook, go explore literally every inch of your town -- nothing is blocked off from the player for the sake of uwu progression in a sandbox game. 

I love this game, there’s a lot it does right; the level of customization is so wonderful!  And as soon as you get your 5 stars, it starts to feel more familiar to me as an Animal Crossing game. Beyond that, I understand that they need to keep doing different things to keep the series fresh, but this doesn’t feel like its it, chief. 

I’ll continue playing the hell out of this one for years to come. But something’s just not right.
