She was far too drunk to reach for the bottle. Instead, Liv cradled the glass of whiskey close to her chest. He wasn’t the first person to say those exact words to her. Her brother, her friends, her neighbors, her ex husbands and fiancee. She waited a moment before speaking. To make sure what came out wasn’t a terrible sob or hiccup. “I gave my baby to people who hurt him.”

The wolf just listened to her and was quiet while he waited for her to finish. “If you had known they would hurt him, would you have given him up to them? There are people who are intent on hurting others, but are very skilled at hiding it from people.” He would know, he had been that person once upon a time.

“Olivia, I honestly believe that if you knew then what you know now, you would have rather died than give him up.”

First, Liv topped off her near empty glass and took a healthy gulp. Her eyes clenched shut as the amber liquid burned it’s way down her throat. “I’ve been married three times. Engaged four. Thought my first fiancee was going to be catatonic for the rest of his life until I found out he was a serial killer. My first husband left me because we thought I couldn’t have kids. The second was abusive and the third liked to hit my nephew. Next?” She took yet another gulp and moved to retop the glass.

“Sometimes it just takes people a while to find the right person, Olivia.” Once she retopped her glass he moved the bottle away from her. “It sounds like you’ve just had a hard time finding that right person.” He didn’t want her drinking herself into oblivion. “And how are you a horrible mother?”

“I found out that I’m a terrible person, a shitty mother, the Hester Prynne of Beacon Hills, an embarrassment to my family. Need I go on?”

“Let’s take this one step at a time.” He paused for a minute to figure out what he wanted to look at first. “How are you Hester Prynne?” Sure, he knew she’d been married in the past but he didn’t know how many times, nor would he say anything about it. That was her life, he wasn’t one to judge. Not with all that he had done.

“A little bit, yeah.” There’s one empty bottle at her feet and the one beside her arm is just about empty. “It’s been a shitty day.”

Of course that’s what he was worried about. He turned Aiden and himself from Omega bitches to stone cold killers in no time flat. Granted, they’d had their own reasons for wanting to do it but, still. He didn’t want anyone mucking with Sara’s head or trying to turn her. Ethan looked down at the ground, squinting a bit. Hiding his emotions wasn’t his strong suit anymore. “That’s not it.”

“You can’t hide lies from me.” He kept his distance, not trying to step inside the house. “I don’t want to take her from you. I know you lost your alpha spark saving yourself that night. I just... I want to offer her health.”

That was the one topic that Ethan couldn’t stand talking about. It still felt like a wound that would never heal. Over time it might scab over but, anytime his brother was mentioned, it was ripped right open again. “Yeah, sure you are.” He growled back and the panic really started when he mentioned Sara. They’d been so careful… or so he’d thought. The only one he’d thought that knew was Ennis and he was… well. Gone. “She’s fine.”

“I am.” He insisted, his expression turning solemn again at Ethan’s demeanor. “I don’t want to hurt her, if that’s what you’re worried about.” The elder wolf kept his hands together and was quietly grateful that the sunglasses he was wearing didn’t show much of the expression in his eyes. “It’s her heart, isn’t it? I could hear it across the street. Sounds like a panicked rabbit, I can see why it worries you.”

One of the things he had sincerely missed, the alpha had decided, was reading. Sure, there were braille books but honestly he had never liked them all that much. He much preferred reading the words with his eyes instead of his of with his fingertips. The wolf side of him liked smelling the paper and ink instead of his scent all over the pages.

He had missed out on a fair number of books and had decided to make a run to a local shop to get some new copies of books that had long been lost. Deucalion, or rather he was Emrys at the moment, supposed he deserved a few of the odd looks he got when he rounded the corner around a book case with his arms full enough that he had to shift them a bit to keep them from tumbling and to see where he was going.

He supposed, now that he saw the looks he was getting, he should have grabbed a hand-basket. Or two. “Excuse me.” He muttered as he passed a woman by the small wire stand where the baskets resided, and once he’d unloaded his books into the baskets he was picking them up and glancing back to the woman he’d skirted past. “It’s been a while since I got new books.” He offered as an explanation.

Ethan raised a brow, crossing his arms in front of him. If the other wolf was going to attack, he would have done so by now. “Yeah, no shit.” He spat back, not really able to hold his tongue. “Tell me something I don’t know.”

Deucalion definitely deserved that. But at the same time he couldn’t help but smile slightly to himself. It wasn’t the situation, just that one thing he’d had to re-learn was that his mental images didn’t always mesh with how things actually looked. He could have sworn that the twins had been redheads. “I went to find you and your brother, I’m sorry for your loss, Ethan.” He paused for a long moment, debating on whether to ask or not and ultimately deciding to. “I know your cousin’s been ill. How has she been doing?”

Ethan flinched the moment the other wolf’s foot came jutting out, though he quickly tried to hide it, upper lip curling to let out a snarl. He didn’t care that the man didn’t want to come in, he had nothing to say to him.

Though fear still struck him, he was going to stand his ground. Deucalion wasn’t his alpha anymore. If he talked back, they were on a more level playing field. That was unless, the man had found a new pack. “I have nothing to apologize for.”

The elder wolf shook his head. “I didn’t say you had to apologize. Just that apologies were in order.” He knew that the other didn’t trust him in the slightest. And he didn’t blame him. Since he’d been spared, he had been trying to repent and do better. “I’ve done a lot of things that I shouldn’t have.”

Of course Ethan had heard the door. But, he hadn’t been expecting anyone. Mom wasn’t supposed to be home for another few days, Sara was off hunting superheroes or whatever other dangerous thing she was into. Whatever it was, it was sure to drive Ethan up the wall with worry.

Still, he’d have to get the door. In case it was an emergency or someone ordered a package. But. as he got closer to the stairs, it seemed that there was something familiar in the heartbeat of whoever it was. And when he opened the door.

“No.” Said the wolf. As he proceeded to try to shut the door right in Deucalion’s face.

Before the door could shut completely, he stuck his foot in the door to keep it from closing. “I just want to talk.” He knew it was asking a lot of Ethan, given all he’d been through thanks to the elder wolf. “I don’t even have to come in. we can talk right here.”

He went to move his white-cane out of habit and ended up standing with his hands awkwardly clasped in front of him. “Apologies are in order, Ethan.”

“That’s even worse.”

“How so?”

Somehow, he hadn’t expected to find him back where he had originally found the twins. He’d thought that being in the home he’d grown up with his twin would be too emotional for Ethan, who had always seemed to be the more sentimental and gentler of the two.

He’d left Beacon Hills for a while, but when he’d gone back to talk to the twins and see if they’d forgive him for his part in their lives being overturned he was surprised to hear what had happened to Aiden. And that Ethan had left.

Deucalion had needed to think back on their travels together in order to figure out where he may be. And he remembered the way he often heard the twins talking when at gas stations, murmuring back and forth about their cousin and if she’d like some trinket they’d found by the tills.

Oh a whim, he’d traveled to New York City, the neighborhood he had originally found the twins in. And so he stood at the door, lightly knocking and knowing that Ethan would hear the knock if he was there.
