OK LET ME LEAVE MY TWO MAGNUM OPUSES HERE
alastors moustache
Probably an unpopular opinion but to me the only way for Vox's character forward is for him to move on from Alastor.
Like I cannot imagine a scenario where al and vox actually get along again AFTER EVERYTHING they've put each other through. To me that's like Angel and Val being friends after everything is said and done. And while the two relationships are different they do parallel each other in the narrative. Like in season one we jump from Val's Angel freak out immediately onto Vox' Alastor freak out. Now from s2 being the Vox and Al triggering each other season the ending points towards s3 being the Val and Angel triggering each other season. Vox and Val's obsession with Al And Angel hurting their own relationship and so on.
So to me the only way forward is either moving on from each other or forever hating each other but transaction in a way where they just do NOT want to see each other.
I dunno it may be just me but any time I imagine/see a story/fic/headcanon where they forgive each other it feels WILDLY out of character for me...
My non-serious answer: I come from a fandom where characters regularly and sometimes canonically reconcile after being on opposite sides of a war for millions of years, seven decades is nothing.
My serious answer: Whoever said they have to forgive each other? I actually said in a post last night that Vox would be justified in not forgiving Alastor, and that goes both ways. Forgiveness is not what I'm here for.
That said.
Alastor has allowed Vox to remain a thorn in his side for seventy years, even though he is most definitely capable of getting rid of him if he was that much of a bother.
Alastor surrendered himself into Vox's hands with absolutely no limits to ensure his own safety.
Vox had his fun the day of capturing Alastor, then rarely touched him and never harmed him for the entire rest of his time in captivity, even with Alastor goading him constantly.
There is a news crawl in S2xE5 which reads, "Alastor to join the Vees after embarrassing defeat".
Mere minutes before Vox's breakdown, Alastor referred to him as his friend, and Vox looked at him like this.
Whether or not it would have been a good idea, and whether or not that's still the case, Vox would absolutely have taken Alastor back at any point in the last seven decades if it was presented to him as an option.
There is a great deal of pain and anger between them, but I don't see hatred. I see two people who still care more than they want to, one of whom still trusts the other enough to make himself helpless without any concern that he'll be hurt in a way he can't handle.
At the end of the day, you're entitled to your opinion. But we ship RadioStatic on this blog.
I also. Strongly disagree with comparing Alastor and Vox to Angel and Val. Val is possessive, but he's not remotely as emotionally invested in Angel as Vox is in Alastor. He was pretty apathetic to the possibility of Angel dying when the Exorcists attacked the hotel.
Also, he owns Angel. Alastor outclasses Vox in power, but they can and have both hurt each other. Angel can't even do that. And again, Vox had Alastor helpless and didn't harm him after that first day of captivity, even when Alastor made him angry. Val hurts Angel freely, especially when he's angry.
It takes way more than a couple similar beats to make them narrative parallels. Vox and Charlie had parallel narratives in S2 because they share a large number of character traits and were literally following the same narrative path of pushing away their friends thanks to outside interference. You could argue that Chaggi and StaticMoth were parallel relationships because Vaggi and Valentino both saw their partners spiraling and were alternately angry and worried about it, even if they ultimately handled the situations differently.
But if RadioStatic and Val/Angel are any kind of parallel, it's the kind that's superficially the same, but ultimately serves to highlight how different they are. They have almost nothing in common.
In your opinion, what does Vox think about friendship?
I think. He understands and values it more than people give him credit for.
Obviously there's the fact that Alastor throwing away their friendship and claiming "There are no friends in Hell" didn't stop him from pulling a team together, or presenting it like something he's proud of right after Alastor accuses him of relying on others for his power. Which is already a defiance of the "villain failed by friendship decides friends are a weakness" trope.
But I think it actually shows most clearly in his moments of conflict with Charlie, whose commitment to her friends would contrast very clearly with a villain who didn't value friendship.
When Vox and Velvette visit the hotel, Charlie puts up with all of their antics right up until they actively target Angel, which angers her to the point that she enters her demonic form and sends them on their way. In the process, Charlie tells Vox, "You can mock me. You can shit on me. But I won't allow you to push my friends around like that, okay?"
Right after, Vaggi threatens Vox with her spear, which gets no reaction whatsoever. But when she changes targets to Velvette, he steps in immediately. He basically said exactly the same thing Charlie did, just with actions instead of words: they can threaten Vox, but he won't let them threaten his friends.
He isn't in his normal state of mind the next time they clash in person, so of course he's all about himself. But the thing I find interesting here is that it's obvious that Charlie isn't working alone to disrupt his plans. And when the attempt to broadcast from Heaven fails, it's obvious that it's because her friends dropped the ball somehow. It's the perfect setup for a "friends will fail you" villain to target the hero's reliance on friendship.
And Vox doesn't do that. Instead, he does exactly what she told him to the last time their paths crossed, and he targets her. Because he's trying to break her down enough to admit defeat, and the last time he targeted her friends, it actually had her pushing back for the first time since they met. She's weaker on her own, because she won't fight for herself the way she fights for others, and he knows that.
As far as I'm concerned, that proves Vox understands friendship better than a vast majority of villains. Even when he's in the middle of pushing his own friends away, even after weeks of being mocked himself for relying on others, even when he can present actual evidence that Charlie's friends "failed", he still recognizes that her friends make her stronger. And when he does use them against her, it's only to tell her that she messed up. "Leading your friends into disaster yet again."
Vox's problem with friendship isn't that he doesn't believe in it. It's that the last person he called a friend stabbed him in the back, and now he's afraid of it happening again.
Lucifer began Vox Populi in a similar way to Hell's Greatest Dad, he sang in a goofy, show off manner, not intending really to threaten Alastor but more to show everyone who's boss. Even then in Vox Populi, his part was still more serious and an attempt to be threatening. When Alastor interrupted him, he immediately just throws himself harder into the musical battle rather than taking it personally. Whereas in Vox Populi, the second Vox started attacking him Lucifer lost it. He even tried to actually kill him. He didn't call him any petty names. (mouthy little mortal was from a place of genuine anger rather than frustration or irritation) He couldn't keep up his prideful attitude or keep his cool. (he kind of lost it in hell's greatest dad but not really the way he lost it in Vox Populi)
the difference between these 2 scenes highlights the most important parts of Lucifer's character, he isn't as invulnerable as he once seemed. Charlie was the only weakness Al had to exploit but even in doing so he diddn't get a truly angry King of Hell. Vox realized the truth about everything when it came to Lucifer, what heaven did, what happened with Lilith. Vox pointed out Lucifer's biggest regrets and insecurities in a way that Al didn't.
Really interesting for Alastor, a guy that claims to understand and know how to manipulate people so well, he didn't actually manipulate Lucifer into his trap, and never actually learned what truly makes him tick.
Vox however figured it out. Vox is able to figure out people in a way Alastor can't, while simultaneously not figuring out Al himself. Whereas it seems like the only person that Al was able to manipulate into his trap is Vox. (Charlie if but honestly I wouldn't really consider his deal with her manipulation bc she knew he was up to something she just figured it wouldn't be that bad)
HAPPY PRIDE FROM OUR AROACE KING!!
I know its not your normal hc, but what do you think about ace vox? Like he does have sex but he also thinks watching alastor gets beat up is better than sex, literally leaves in the middle of sex, and the 2 times we do see him encourage sex is one time a power play against alastor, and the second time a manipulation tactic towards valentino
Oh there's a solid opportunity to cook here. Like, ace!Vox who only fucks as a powerplay/a strategic or aesthetic choice? If you crack open that TV and look inside there's a guy picking apart the whole concept of 'having sex' and going well okay, this is something that strong, powerful men do so obviously I'm doing it. And obviously I'm going to find the hottest guy in Hell (Valentino) to sleep with, and he's going to be all over me and wanting to fuck all the time. Yeah, this is PERFECT for my image! This is exactly how it's supposed to look!
You can also combine his people pleasing and wanting to be liked. If vox's partner wants sex (and we all know valentino wants sex), then vox will accommodate so he won't leave him
Oh absolutely. And he gets around Valentino's ridiculously high sex drive by keeping their whole arrangement 'open' and being super busy with work a lot of the time, so as to explain why he isn't all over Val to the degree that Val is all over him.
Considering that this is Vox, he's also probably market-tested what his sexuality should be for maximum popularity and decided he's "not" ace. He's up there waving the bi flag on the pride float because that's what the focus groups responded to. Now we have a new reason why he looks so [soulless corporate smile] about it too.
Heyy happy pride month!!
of course I drew these guys- can’t expect anything less
CHEUGY VAMPIRE FAD
just finished the episode
oh, it's about to go down. i'm so grateful for this messy, beautiful gothic story.
my fav relationship ship dynamic is where it doesn't matter if you call it platonic or romantic or queerplatonic because they always act the same in every type of relationship. and the way they act? fucking weird.
Is there a 4th level of asexuality where you're not sex repulsed at all but incredibly scared of sex
happy pride month 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
*sounding as if I'm pacing in circles in an isolation cell* The Vees's float is clearly designed to be placed to the right of the Hazbin Hotel crew's because that's where Husk (who's missing Angel) is looking at, but Husk is not the only one looking in that direction: Alastor is fully facing the right. And you'd think, then, that Vox would be looking back in the direction of the Hazbin Hotel float, and that would be like a subtle interaction between them in the same vein as Husk looking at Angel. But NO!! VOX IS LOOKING THE OTHER WAY, AWAY FROM ALASTOR!!! This is foreshadowing for Vox genuinely trying to ignore Alastor and move on in the future while Alastor still expects his attention I know it I'm not delusional DO NOT SEDATE ME I'M RIGHT STATICSILENCE CANON IN SEASON 3
Yk I tended to think of the Vees as the murder family with Vox as Lestat and Val as Louis for surface level reasons, but watching TVL and thinking back on the big moments of the story… yeah, no, Val is definitely the Lestat 😭
If Vox is Louis and Alastor is still Armand… yeah. Oh yeah.
This of course changes if you’d rather Angel be Armand. I do not, but I respect that alternative view.
You know how I’ve explained before that Alastor’s terrifying behavior, demeanor, and self-expression effectively neutralizes anything that would be considered “attractive” in canon/WFLT such that he is not considered conventionally attractive in Hell?
We should consider the possibility that Vox’s influence unintentionally reverses this, in Partners. It is not anything Vox does intentionally, mind. Vox is not pushing his luck doing suicidal things like trying to give Alastor a makeover. But like—taking things one by one here.
Alastor is sincerely happy when Vox is around (and Vox is around most of the time), so his proportion of “terrifying horror movie monster” smiles to “just a happy guy” smiles is totally out of whack, versus his canon-typical state. At any given time Alastor is more likely to be like ✨🥰✨ than 👹.
Meanwhile, Vox keeps trying to be “thoughtful” and “doting” by replacing Alastor’s suits when they get even remotely worn or threadbare, so Alastor is not walking around in “evil shambling creature chic” all the time.
Alastor is also, on a general level, less exhausted and better taken care of at all times, yet again undercutting the Creature From Beyond aesthetic. He’s hydrated. He’s moisturized. He uses conditioner. He’s actually getting a full night’s sleep after being out until 4am because Vox is being forced to very kindly covering his obligations at the hotel that morning.
And the funniest possible result of this whole situation is that Alastor seems (a) more approachable and (b) in an evil, dangerous, honeypotting kind of way, sort of cute to a fair portion of the population. They get what Vox is seeing. They do not get how Vox is actually getting what he’s seeing, because obviously Alastor only looks like an adorable woodland creature so that you’ll get close enough for him to unhinge his jaw and eat you like the Monty Python killer rabbit or some shit—but still.
In conclusion I think Val has definitely hit on him.
