A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
Again she was incredibly appreciative that he seemed to know what she wanted without her having to verbalize it. Him giving her the space she required to compose herself, while still initiating some contact by holding her hand was exactly what Charlotte needed. She was very much ready to move on from the subject and try to salvage what was left of their day. If he had more questions she would answer them, but that might have to be left for another day. This wasn’t something she wanted to have consume the entirety of their time together, and it was such a sensitive topic that it had the potential to derail her altogether if she didn’t get off the subject.
She smiled at his offer, a tiny laugh, that sounded more like a release of breath than anything else, escaping her. Charlotte gently tightened her grip on his hand, wishing she could also throw him a grateful smiling, but she was still avoiding his gaze. “I’d like that… but water would be fine.” She reluctantly dropped his hand and stood, smoothing her skirt out of habit. The propriety of the action was fairly pointless given the fact that her shirt was halfway undone. Noticing, she did up a few buttons as she spoke, simultaneously beginning to walk towards the bathroom. “I’ll be right back; I can only imagine the state I’m in.” She already knew without looking that her face would be puffy and there wasn’t much she could do about that, but at least she could wash off any residual makeup. ”If you have trouble finding anything just give me a shout.” She added, calling over her shoulder. It felt odd to have carried on a conversation while keeping her face turned resolutely away from him the entire time, but her pride had stubbornly taken control.
When she flicked the bathroom light on and saw exactly what she was dealing with Charlotte was instantaneously relieved she had avoided facing Marcus. She was a wreck, plain and simple. The fact that she had applied heavier makeup this morning had slipped her mind and the mascara tracks leading down her cheeks were worse than she had anticipated. While she took to washing off the smudged remainder of her makeup it finally sunk in what she had done. She had confided in someone and her world hadn’t come crashing down- in fact it had felt liberating. Of course, Marcus wasn’t just ‘someone.’ They had yet to put into words what their unconventional relationship was, but Charlotte knew it was something equally as genuine as it was wonderful. Her feelings for him only continued to intensify with each interaction and she didn’t see that changing any time soon.
After her face was bare Charlotte studied her reflection with a critical eye, toying with the idea of reapplying her makeup. The cool water had helped diminish a bit of the puffiness, but her eyes were still bloodshot and her face still pink and tear-stained. In the end she decided against makeup. It was a silly, vain thing to be so preoccupied with anyway. Not wanting to change her mind and let her self-consciousness get the better of her, she turned without a second-glance at the mirror and made her way out into the hall. She paused for a moment before entering the living room, not sure what to say after the dark nature of their previous conversation. When Charlotte did walk back in she, unsurprisingly, was still unable to find the appropriate words and could only smile shyly as she took a seat next to him once more.
If Marcus understood anything, it was the need for personal and emotional space. He didn't like people asking him questions unless he was willing to answer them, and he didn't like them lingering around when he was feeling emotionally vulnerable. It went without saying, that he could get downright cranky if he felt violated in any of these ways, and it was something that he thought he and Charlotte had an innate understanding of when it came to one another. Her way of dealing with it was a little different than his, but he very much could grasp what it felt like to feel so exposed after having just opened up to somebody. Given what she had just shared with him, that was probably a feeling multiplied by ten fold. She had to be exhausted, and he wasn't sure if this unplanned detour into her past was a good thing or a not so good thing, but despite the heaviness of it all, he knew it was important that it had happened, and that was a good thing. If they were continued on with this relationship, as unorthodox as it was, walls had to be broken down; and what was exposed was not going to be easy to share. Marcus had spent so long avoiding this, it was a stark reminder of what it was like to truly be an adult.
He nodded as she stood, reluctant to let her go, but again, entirely aware that it was necessary. She was shy again, self-conscious of her disheveled appearance; already attempting to put herself back together. He could tell her that none of that mattered to him, that she looked just as beautiful as ever, just as he couldn't fathom judging her for what she had just told him, but he knew that she knew how he felt, and it would still be difficult for her to accept. He didn't want to push it, and instead he smiled up at her as she turned to head down the hall towards the bathroom. "Okay, I should be fine." Once she was gone, he stood and made his way into the small kitchen. Finding two glasses wasn't very difficult, and he opened to fridge to see that she had a pitcher full of filtered water; probably a better choice than the tap. He poured them both a glass full, returned the pitcher, and meandered back into the living room. The house was virtually silent now, and in it Marcus could still hear the sounds of her crying in his head; pain and release at once, and he had to wonder how long it had been since she had broken down like that, to anyone.
Could he do the same? He knew he needed to tell her, it was only right after her show of such deep trust to him; not that he felt it was 'owed', but that she deserved to have his trust returned on a similar level. He hadn't talked to anyone about it in years, whenever his therapists had tried to bring it up, he had shut down. Grief consoling had been a complete and utter waste, and even if it could have offered something, he hadn't been willing to listen or try. It wasn't a violation, it was not a betrayal like Charlotte had experienced, but it was a moment where he had felt part of himself torn away, a moment that would impact the rest of his life and leave him a person that would never be the same. He had to tell her, but he didn't know if now was the right time. Soon.
He settled back down on the couch, taking a few sips of water from his glass, relieved that she had suggested water over tea; the cool relief was all at once a necessity. He heard the bathroom door open and close, and she eventually emerged back into the room; her make up mostly gone now, but that didn't matter whatsoever, her natural beauty shone through, and if Marcus was being honest, he just wasn't a big make up guy anyways. "I found the pitcher," he said, handing her the other glass and shifting around a little to better face her once she sat down. In the aftermath of their last conversation, an awkward heaviness hung in the air, and he wasn't much better at coping with these moments than she was. He looked down at the glass in his hands, turning it slowly. It wasn't easy to return to a level state after that, let alone back to where they had been before he had exposed her scar, but Marcus also didn't want to just bounce back, because that felt a bit like negating the importance of what she had just shared. God, he was so bad at these kinds of things.
Glancing back up at her, it was probably painfully obvious he was searching for a right way to navigate back into a well timed topic. And then his self-awareness became too much and he shook his head, cringing at his own ineptitude. "I'm sorry, Charlotte....I'm so........" Was 'awkward' even the right word for it? He trailed off, not even able to finish the sentence. Pulling in a breath, he tried again. "Do you want to get some fresh air? We could go out somewhere...." Fuck, that was a terrible suggestion. Finally, he just puffed out an exasperated little laugh and shook his head again; leaning back into the couch cushion and running a hand down his face. "If you can't tell, I'm a little rusty....."
A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
The tears wouldn’t stop, even with his reassuring words and touches. The only thing Charlotte hated more than crying was crying in front of another person. But somehow the closeness, even in light of her embarrassing breakdown, didn’t cause her any further discomfort. When he pulled her nearer she wanted to completely lose herself in the foreign tenderness and she pressed her body even closer. She felt the tiniest bit of relief with his words, as though they had peeled back a layer of the hardened pitch that had invaded her heart. The only problem was she hadn’t told him everything, hadn’t covered all the bases of her guilt. What she had neglected to share was a fear she knew to be irrational, but that had never stopped it from consuming her thoughts when she let the darkness take over.
What was the point of verbalizing the sick idea that she shared fault in what had happened to her? Rationally she knew it wasn’t true, so sharing the information to get reassurance in return seemed pointless. She found it difficult enough to simply remember how easily her parents had believed Charles when he told them she had instigated what he’d done; saying it aloud would be awful. Charlotte had already wasted too much of their time and she knew if she kept talking about it she may not be able to regain her composure. Even now such a task was difficult, his apology had touched her and it made the tears fall even harder. She was so tired of crying over this.
Marcus was patient while she continued trying, in vain, to pull herself together. She appreciated him allowing her the time to get it all out, almost as much as she did his closeness. Finding such a secure warmth in the arms of another person was still a new sensation for her, but it was one she reveled in. He could have been scared away by everything she just said, and though that would have been a distressing outcome she wouldn’t have blamed him. The fact that he was still here, holding her tight and laying his head against hers- well, to say it was a relief would be an understatement.
Once she finally started calming down a bit she focused on her breathing and the tears eventually began slowing down. It wasn’t long before they had finally subsided, but she took a few extra minutes to just allow him to hold her before finally pulling back. She scooted over and brought herself to a sitting position, turning her head as she wiped at her eyes. Mother fuck, she probably looked awful. Charlotte was torn between wishing she had a mirror and never wanting to know how horrible she currently looked. Still, she didn’t regret what she had just divulged. It felt immeasurably relieving to finally confide in someone, as much as she hated to admit something like that to herself. “Thank you.” It came out soft and quiet, and she knew it couldn’t possibly articulate how grateful she was for him. Charlotte still didn’t face Marcus, not only for reasons of vanity (though that was a significant factor), but also because she was finding it difficult after everything she had just said.
Charlotte cried, and Marcus let her do so without interruption. He couldn't remember the last time he had seen somebody cry like this, and had only held one other woman as she broke down in his entire life. Human contact, human emotions, normally these were such foreign and terrifying things for him, but with the right person, it came so naturally. He knew he would always be judged as an ass, but none of them would ever see him like this, and that was just fine with him. All he had ever wanted was to find that one person that truly understood him, and at this point in his life he had all but given up on that ideal; it seemed he had been preemptive to make that judgement. Charlotte may not know him extremely well, but he felt, without a doubt, that she understood him, and now he felt he better understood her. Their connection had been practically instantaneous, but something deeper was growing between them, and if Marcus let himself linger on that thought too long, he already that knew that what he felt for her was starting to go beyond 'liking'. That was as terrifying as it was exciting.
He kept soothing Charlotte with soft touches of reassurance as she continued to cry, and he did his best to process everything that she had just told him, his head still rested against hers. Was there more to it? Possibly, he couldn't say for sure one way or another. He just had to believe that she trusted him enough to tell him, if she ever felt like she needed or wanted to. What she had just confessed to him was horrific enough to last ten lifetimes; for her sake he truly hoped there wasn't any more. Nevertheless, they were crucial pieces of her life; explanations for her motivations, powerful forces that had helped to shape the person she was today. It was easy to view what had happened to her in a negative light, because it was so appalling and traumatic, but Marcus very much liked who she was, and he hoped she knew that he accepted her just as she was, her past included. He didn't know how else to tell her that, but to show her, as he was now, holding her, letting her talk, cry, anything she needed to do.
Her crying slowed, and then eventually stopped. She moved away from him a little bit, and he let her go, admittedly somewhat reluctantly. She kept her head turned away from him, however, and he knew she didn't want him to look at her, eyes puffy, makeup smeared, the shame she felt. In a way, it was similar to how she had acted after the lockdown, appalled that he could see she had been crying; but in this case, much more complicated. Marcus reached out and brushed a few strands of hair from her shoulder, but he didn't try to get her to look at him; he didn't care at all what state of she was in, and he was not going to judge her after what she had just told him, but he also respected her wishes to keep up the personal space that she needed. "You're welcome," he replied earnestly. instead letting his hand move down to take up her own, holding it tightly. A lot could be said without many words, and he could feel that deep connection growing deeper yet.
Wanting to give her a few minutes to feel like she could comfortably collect herself without him so close, as well as offer them both a chance to pause amidst the heavy turn the conversation had taken, he spoke up into the silence. "How about I go get us those drinks?" True, he had never set foot in her kitchen, but he was fairly sure he could find his way around well enough. "Maybe some tea?" A small smile warmed up his words with a touch of humor, and he gave her hand another squeeze. "I can't promise a proper cup of English tea, but I can try my best...."
A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
Charlotte first shook her head at his question before verbalizing the ‘no’ vehemently. She didn’t even know if Charles, or her parents for that matter, were still living. The first few years after she left home she had frequently worried that her family would try to track her down. With their money and influence she didn’t think it would be difficult, but they never had. It was one of those strange circumstances where Charlotte wanted nothing to do with them and was grateful she’d been left alone, but at the same time it it hurt to think about how they had likely made no effort to look for her. She had never come close to contacting her parents after leaving, no matter how difficult and lonely her first years in the states had been. Their relationship had been tainted beyond repair and Charlotte knew there was no point attempting to salvage it.
"I haven’t seen him since I was 17." Even though he had been sent away Charlotte still saw her brother during the holidays. Her parents liked to have lavish parties for every occasion, inviting everyone who was anyone in their social circle, so at least she never had to be alone with him again. But even just being in the same room- knowing he was watching her… December quickly became her least favorite time of year. "He was sent off to boarding school, once my parents knew," she began explaining, slowly. This was another difficult explanation to give, but at this point she needed to get the whole story out. "He was always to take on the family business once he came of age, and my parents knew that a scandal… it would hurt business and kill their social standing." Her parents considered their image to be synonymous with their success, and tarnishing such a sterling family reputation would have been the end of their world.
This was one of the places she harbored the most resentment and her voice was finally starting to betray her emotion. She took a moment to focus on the soothing feeling of his fingers trailing lightly through her hair. “After my parents informed me that Charles had been sent away they carried on as though nothing had happened at all.” Charlotte omitted mentioning the unspoken blame they had placed on her; even years later she’d still catch her mother staring at her in a disappointed confusion, as though she couldn’t understand where her daughter had went wrong. “I left when I turned 18, without word. I haven’t spoken to my family since.”
She knew that there was definitely a more thorough and coherent way to explain everything, but it was all coming out in brief snippets. The next thing that slipped out was something that had been on her mind for years, something that never failed to make her question the choice she made to completely cut her parents out of her life. ”At least they sent him away, kept him from me… That was something, I suppose.” Her voice finally broke, a few unwanted tears escaping despite her best efforts to keep them at bay. She felt like apologizing again; this was probably not the way he had envisioned their day going.
It was quite clear from the moment that Marcus asked Charlotte if her brother was still a part of her life, that he no longer was, and that was an immense relief to hear. To think that a man like that could still find her and hurt her was deeply unsettling, but Marcus also realized a moment later that there was a deep sadness in her voice as she explained further. Yes, her brother was no longer a part of her life, but it seemed to have come at a high cost; that being a separation from her entire family. More things began to make sense now; why she had left England at such a young age, her obvious aversion to the topic of having immigrated entirely. She had managed to stay amazingly collected and calm throughout this entire confession, but he could see her resolve was slipping. This almost seemed more difficult for her to talk about than the assaulting itself, and it said a lot about how much family could hurt you, in more ways than one.
Marcus knew something about that, and he felt himself nodding lightly as she explained the necessity to keep her brother's transgressions out of the public eye, no matter what the cost. Yes, that was familiar in its own painful way; except he had been the one to be cut away, like a rotten slice. We cannot have the bad apples spoiling the lot. Love and supposed loyalty paled in comparison to greed, and it was amazing how quickly a blind eye could be turned. Marcus could tell himself all he wanted that he had never wanted to be a part of his family anyways, but that wasn't the truth. It hurt, and he could see that Charlotte was still hurting, in ways he couldn't fully grasp. What she said next confirmed his suspicions; cover the mess up, sweep it under the rug, carry on as if nothing had ever happened. Was that worse than rape? He thought it was, and he could only hope his silent understanding would be enough, because he truly didn't know the right words to say just yet. He continued to gently run his fingers through her hair, while his other arm remained wrapped around her shoulders.
But inevitably the pain won out, and he could feel her holding onto the last threads of her self control, trying not to break down. Even though her head was still lying on his chest, he could see most of her face well enough to catch the shimmer of those first few tears track down her cheeks. Therapists had always told him, over and over again, that people needed to mourn to truly move on; he had never allowed himself to, he had just buried the pain further beneath the escape of drugs. Perhaps Charlotte had been doing the same, but not with drugs, with the distances she created, between herself and other people, starting all those years ago with her family. It was no wonder she was still questioning herself, even now.
"You did what you felt was right," he told her quietly, finally finding his voice, his hand moving down to rub at her shoulder. "You did what you needed to do, to survive....that took courage. What they did, sending him away...." She was right of course, it was something, it may have very well saved her life. But did that make it an unselfish action? He doubted it; as she had just said, her family's interests were motivated by things he had experienced in his own life; reputation, social standing, financial gain, superficiality. "Is it deserving of your guilt though, them sending him away?" He wasn't trying to challenge her, but more trying to understand how she viewed it. "Did sending him away make up for what they did to you before, make up for the....indifference?" He shifted on the couch, pulling her up further against him and placing a kiss on the top of her head. "I don't think what they did took any courage at all."
It would be a mistake to try and get her to stop crying, even if he hated seeing her do it. Maybe if somebody had not stopped him from crying, so many times over, he would be a better person than he was now. Instead, he leaned his head down and rested his cheek against her temple. "I am so sorry, Charlotte, " he whispered, knowing she didn't want pity, but very much feeling the need to let her know that she had every right to every tear she shed, for what she had just told him, for all of it.
A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
When Marcus’ hand went back to that horrid spot on her stomach she felt an unexpected sense of comfort hit her. The fact that he didn’t start offering up sympathies was an enormous relief. What happened to her was awful, and it went without saying that it had played a significant role in shaping who she was. But pity wouldn’t change what had happened, and having people treat her like a fragile victim was something Charlotte could not tolerate. It was one of many things that made her wish she was better at hiding her vulnerability, and she truly envied those who could so easily mask their feelings. Marcus seemed to intuitively understand this and it only endeared him to her even more.
She was receptive to the embrace, nestling closer and taking a breath while she wrestled with what to say next. Did he even want to know more? Was she prepared to talk about it? Her trepidation was coming from multiple sources. For one, their time today was precious and she didn’t want to bring things to such a screeching halt. It was also a heavy subject, one she was reluctant to bring up for fear of his reaction. Even without those worries there was still the significant hurdle of actually being able to talk about it. The last and only time Charlotte had shared what happened was to her mother and the resulting ramifications had been almost, if not equally, as traumatizing as what she had suffered. She trusted Marcus wouldn’t judge or blame her like her parents, but that irrational fear had been living with her for 27 years and it was as relentless as it was toxic.
"I was fourteen." The words were quiet and had hopped out of her mouth almost unconsciously, the part of her that had been holding it in for so long attempting to take control. She kept her head lying securely against his chest. Both the closeness and the knowledge that she didn’t have to look him in the eye were reassuring. "He had never been… abusive before, but-" God, how did she even say this? It wasn’t easy to candidly divulge that the first time her brother raped her he chose to use extreme violence to frighten her into submission and silence; his fists and the threat of cutting her again were enough after that.
"He would…" She grappled for a gentle way to phrase it, "force himself… on me. And he didn’t take kindly to resistance." Charlotte knew she should have felt relieved to finally get it out, and she did to a certain extent, but was too consumed with shame for her next confession. "I let it happen for a year before I told." Remarkably she had yet to start crying. The empty and detached nature of her tone was mirroring her current attempts to remove herself from the threat of long-suppressed feeling being stirred up.
Marcus had no idea what to expect next. It seemed just as likely that Charlotte would leave it at that as were the chances that she would say more. Either way, he would never judge her, or consider one option better than the other. He had no idea what it was like to experience what she had, what it was like to live with it for all these years. He could be exceedingly arrogant, but there were limits to that quality in him. This was completely new territory, despite nearly half a decade of life, and more than enough unpleasant experiences to fill two lifetimes. But what Charlotte proceeded to tell him, as his arms remained securely wrapped around her, was something so unsettling and there really was nothing that could have really prepared him to bear witness to its retelling. As she continued to speak, he remained silently attentive.
Even with his guessing that she had suffered some kind of trauma at the hands of a man, he had never imagined this....and her brother..... It was...no, there really weren't any words. It was truly a work of humanity at its most depraved. Marcus let his hand gently rub across her forearm, a silent cue to encourage her to either get out what she needed to, or leave out what she needed to; she had said enough for him to be able to fill in the gaps, as sickening as those thoughts were. A whole year of it, terrified into submission. So many years later, those scars remained, and not just the physical ones. Charlotte had chosen to help people in need, but all along she had been suffering in awful silence. She had been broken and violated by family, people she was supposed to trust the most; Marcus knew that that was simply not something you 'got over', even with therapy.
He reached up and slowly ran a hand through her hair, her head now settled on his chest. It was easier this way, to let all of that sink in with them not looking right at one another. If she thought for one second though that knowing this about her now would scare him off or cause him to view her in a negative light, that couldn't be further from the truth. Things made more sense now, yes, but he felt stronger than ever about wanting to be close to her; he could only imagine how difficult it must have been for her to tell him what she just had. Despite the feelings of anger and disgust he was now held towards her family, he also felt enormously at a loss for words knowing that she trusted him on this level.
He shifted a little, working some moisture into his suddenly dry mouth. "Is your brother....." He wasn't sure exactly how to word it; 'alive' seemed a little overdramatic, because right now he wanted to kill that vile bastard, and 'around' seemed far too understated, given what her brother done to her. After a pause, Marcus continued, "Is he...still a part of your life?" How had her parents reacted? What did they do to him? Questions remained, but Marcus didn't want to push her any further. This trauma had haunted her for so long, he didn't want to keep dragging her into the past. He wanted to be a part of her future, hopefully a much better one for both of them.
A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
Charlotte had allowed herself to become completely lost in their actions, and even though it was definitely a positive change it had resulted in something entirely slipping her attention. Her scar hadn’t even enter her mind until she felt his fingers brush over it and she instantly froze. This had always been a speed bump with romantic partners, one that she wished she could avoid altogether. If it wasn’t for its length and jagged appearance she might have been able to pass it off as a surgery scar, thus avoiding the questions she couldn’t answer and the secrecy she had to resort to. Charlotte hated it. Hated the way it was still pink and raised after so many years, hated that there was no way to hide it, but most of all she hated everything it was associated with. In this particular moment she hated that she had probably ruined things.
Every other time she had been questioned about it her answer had been brief and along the lines of ‘it was nothing’ or ‘I don’t want to talk about it.’ It wasn’t always an effective way to end further questions about what had happened, but it was efficient enough. It was fairly obvious that it was a knife wound so she was sure past lovers had correctly assumed it was a traumatic event she’d rather not talk about. Normally she never confided in anyone, about the story behind the scar or even a general explanation. It was something Charlotte was sure she would never be able to talk about in explicit detail, but with Marcus she wanted to be honest, at least to some degree.
She nodded at his question, but was unable to hide the sudden unease and self-consciousness that had settled over her. “I’m sorry…” Was what she chose to start with, apologizing mostly for breaking the mood, but also because she just couldn’t help herself. Charlotte averted her eyes, not quite knowing what to say or how to say it. She didn’t want to drag him down and spoil their time together, but, again, she wanted to give him honesty. “It was my… my brother who…” She trailed off, gesturing at her stomach and still avoiding his gaze. The explanation may have been extremely brief, but it was more than she had ever divulged before.
The instantaneous regret that he had even stopped at all continued as Marcus looked Charlotte in the eyes and saw the deep pain and conflict in them. If he had just kept going, it was likely the scar may have not even come up, for now at least. This was the last thing he had wanted, her feeling self aware and uncomfortable; and now, it seemed, also wrongly guilty that she felt at fault for ruining the mood of a perfectly heated moment. There was no denying it, the scar had the distinctive irregular quality of a mark made in violence; Marcus knew enough about physiology to at least pick that up almost immediately, and of course she knew that it was obvious. It would be difficult for anyone being intimate with her to assume otherwise, which made him feel both angry and ill at the thought that this had happened to her. And now she had to live on, with a constant reminder branded on her body. A violation. More things about Charlotte began to fall into place.
Marcus remained where he was, carefully perched over her, watching her with his brows knitted in concern. She apologized, and he shook his head, hating that she felt the need to do such a thing, but also knowing her well enough now to know that that is what she did. He wondered briefly if that would be it, all she would tell him, and in the end he couldn't blame her. Her averted gaze spoke of a kind of emotional avoidance he could understand. But when she managed to tell him that it was her brother, of all people, who had done this to her, cut her deeply enough to leave that kind of a scar, Marcus was honestly too shocked to say anything for a number of seconds. The implications of even that bit of information were very disturbing. Why had her brother done it, and what else had he done to her? Surely a man did not exert that kind of violence against his sister only once. Charlotte's drop into silence and her continued inability to maintain eye contact spoke volumes.
She didn't want pity, Marcus innately knew this. She no doubt would rather have it not lingered on at all, but he couldn't just let this go; not because he wanted her to linger on it and feel the echoes of pain attached to those memories, but because he wanted to know her, all of her, the beauty and the brokenness both. He thought about shifting down and kissing the marred area as a gesture of comfort and acceptance, but that struck him as possibly too much, if not just downright creepy. Instead, he moved his hand back down and simply placed it over the scar; his palm warm against her raised flesh. "You have nothing to be sorry for," he murmured, attempting to meet her gaze. "Thank you, for telling me," And he meant that. For people like them, these guarded pieces were precious, and absolutely terrifying to expose to another human being.
He sat up a little, wrapping his arm around her to hold her against him. He wasn't sure what else to do just yet, but right now, it felt like the right thing.
A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
They had spent so much time prior to this moment only authorized to speak and, if they were lucky, sneak brief touches whenever possible. It had allowed her to get to know him better and she truly did value each conversation they’d had, even if she had ached for something more. Now, with no boundaries, she also found herself appreciating that it had laid a foundation which permitted them to continue without saying much at all. Charlotte was aware that she didn’t know everything about him, just as he didn’t know a lot of things about her, but what she did know had gained him her full trust. All her reservations had faded away into unintelligible babble; all she wanted was him. At this moment, more specifically, she wanted his lips to keep doing whatever the hell they wanted to her body.
His not-so-secret confession made her smile against his mouth, now on the corner of hers. Charlotte turned her head to kiss him fully on the lips, still smiling softly when she pulled away seconds later, her hands slowly trailing down to land on his shoulders. She had known she was in trouble from their first meeting, knew that her feelings for him were likely to only grow stronger with each encounter; and just like that he had already started consuming her thoughts. “We should have done this ages ago,” she breathed against his mouth, moving right back to kissing him with a thorough attention. Maybe she’d been able to restrain herself previously because she had grossly underestimated just how invigorating and gratifying this would be. Now that she knew, it was clearly going to make the temptation all the more strong and frustrating in the future. Even so she couldn’t have cared less in the moment.
Charlotte didn’t want to rush things too much, though she was probably failing miserably already, but it was becoming unbearably difficult to resist the strong desire to grind down against his obvious arousal. Instead she leaned back to start lowering herself to the couch, her hands tugging gently against his shoulders encouraging him to follow suit.
Going back to the Manor after this was going to be pure hell. It was one thing to think and fantasize about being with Charlotte like this, it was entirely another to finally know that experience and then have to go on like they had been before; patient and nurse...nothing more, no fraternizing, no physical contact beyond what her duties might entail. All the while, he was going to be vividly remembering what her searing kisses tasted like, what her voice sounded like husking to him, what her body felt like against his all along. It was a doomed road no matter how you looked at it, but it seemed both of them were more than willing to throw themselves onto that path anyways. Some things were entirely worth it; and maybe, just maybe, he would get better and get out for good, and they could do this every day, as much as they wanted to. Marcus had never felt so motivated in his entire life.
Their kissing slowed to a languid pace for a moment, and he echoed Charlotte's sentiment, ghosting his lips over hers and smiling. "We should have....," His expression turned more solemn and thoughtful as he, as usual, felt inclined to consider the 'what ifs' of any given situation. "I wish I had met you...before...." Before what, this latest relapse? Before Emily? Before Zoe was killed? Things might have been different; but for the better? There was no way of knowing. Luckily she kissed him again, more urgently this time, and his eyes fluttered back shut; content to set the worries aside. When she began to lean down onto the couch cushions, urging him on, he was more than happy to go, leaning down over her, careful to not crush her under his much heavier weight, but pressing with enough friction to keep their bodies closely knitted together.
His lips found the length of her neck again, and now that it was untucked from her skirt, he began to explore beneath the hem of her blouse. As he did so, his fingertips grazed over a raised line of flesh; what felt like a fairly good sized scar on her otherwise smooth stomach, and he should have just kept going, but unconsciously he paused there, because it was so jarring. All at once questions and concerns of how she had gotten it jumped into his mind, and they were difficult to set aside, even with her underneath him, her shirt halfway undone. He lifted his head, propping himself up on an elbow and looking her in the eyes. "Are you okay?" He wasn't sure if he meant now, or when it had happened, or just in a general sense, but it suddenly felt very necessary to ask.

A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
It was astonishing (and had she not been so distracted she may have realized it) that something which usually caused her immeasurable anxiety was coming so naturally. Her mind was so often cluttered with relentless questions of what she should do next, how she should behave, what others were thinking of her… It was exhausting. But in this particular moment her brain was blissfully silent. Every ounce of her attention was consumed by the sensations and feelings being evoked by their actions. They broke contact for a moment after they sat and she opened her eyes to see him staring at her. A soft smile spread across her face as his hands came up to cup her cheeks, her lips surging forward to meet his again.
Things might have been progressing quickly, but the notion never managed to penetrate her foggy cloud of lust, and even if it had she likely wouldn’t have cared. Her next move was made partly because she didn’t want to continue craning her neck to the side and also because it seemed like a natural progression. She shifted, sliding her left leg over so that she was now straddling his lap, her skirt riding up on her thighs, her lips still hungry and insistent on his. Charlotte’s hands went to tangle in his short hair the same time that his were creating a blazing trail of warmth as they slid down lower and lower down her back.
The whimper of protest that escaped her when he pulled away morphed quickly into a quiet moan of approval when his warm mouth descended on her neck. Charlotte’s head practically tilted itself, giving him better access without hesitation. Her breathing was labored and her face felt completely flushed. Just having him allude to performing this action had been arousing enough, but actually experiencing it was something spectacularly different altogether.
When Marcus had been younger, he had been blundering, at best, with women; not just talking to them, or attempting to socialize in a civil manner, but in those rare cases when he finally managed to not completely alienate one and had a chance to be intimate. However, a couple of decades later, and he had a much better idea of what he was doing; age, and a few strong minded teachers along the way would do that to you. This was actually one area of life where he felt legitimately confident. And yet, this wasn't just any woman he was touching and kissing, this was Charlotte, a woman he had exceptionally strong feelings for, feelings that went beyond the purely physical. He didn't want to treat her like glass, nor did he want to push her too far. He knew he had to listen to what her body was saying and react accordingly. And then there was everything that was so beautifully feminine about her that was driving him absolutely crazy; her soft lips working against his, the silky caress of her exposed skin, and the perfectly placed curves of her body, ever more distinct as she moved herself to straddle his lap. If there was any question of hesitation on her part, he knew that that was no longer so much an issue as he had feared it might be.
Her fingers raking through his hair was a personal turn on that she had stumbled upon quite quickly, and Marcus groaned his approval as they got lost in another heated kiss; his hands slowly tracing down over her hips to explore the smooth length of her thighs where her skirt had begun to ride up. Even through his jeans, there was most definitely no avoiding her being physically aware of his growing arousal now that she was straddling him. A small smile curved his lips when he pulled back to kiss her neck and she voiced her disapproval, only for it to turn to what he was pretty sure was bliss a moment later. Urged on even more so by the tilt of her head, he reached up, undoing the top few buttons of her blouse with care. Delicately, he parted the fabric to better expose her neck and shoulders; a palm cradling her angled cheek as he worked his way over her collarbone and over the cusp of her shoulder. The flush of her skin was intoxicating beneath his mouth, and he swore he could spend hours just doing this. But soon he worked his way back up, along the gentle slope of her jawline, before needing to taste her lips again; sucking gently on her bottom lip and running his fingers through her long hair.
"God, I've wanted to do this from the moment I saw you...that day in the library," he whispered through the racing beat of his breath, lashes half hooded over bright blue irises as he kissed at the corner of her mouth. He was pretty sure she was more than aware of that confession, in retrospect he probably hadn't been too subtle about displaying his instant attraction to her, but he still felt like he needed to tell her. It very might be the last coherent sentence he would manage to form for the time being.
A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
God was she glad he didn’t take her up on the offer. Her heart was practically pounding against her ribcage and she was sure all the breath had left her body when finally closed the distance between them. Marcus wasn’t holding back and neither did she. The same unexpected rush of raw need was overtaking her, just as it had in the hallway what felt like ages ago. How had they gone so long without doing this? Her hands settled on his chest for a few moments before she slid them up to wrap around his neck, using the anchor to pull herself closer.
Charlotte was so glad that her memory hadn’t exaggerated just how fantastic kissing him felt. It was completely overwhelming in the best way possible. Before she had honestly never understood why people enjoyed kissing so much. It had never really done anything for her, and she concluded that maybe it was simply something she would never take much pleasure in. Now it was clear that she had simply been kissing the wrong people. Granted, most of the men she had attracted were probably not the best guys, she was self-aware enough to admit that. One of her close friends from college had told her it was because she lacked confidence, but that wasn’t exactly something she could manufacture.
She didn’t want to think about any of the horrid past relationships she had gotten herself into, however, especially not at a time like this. Marcus may not be perfect, but he was everything that mattered to her and she trusted him unconditionally. Charlotte started pulling him towards the couch, her lips never leaving his for a second. Her whole body was being filled with a tingling warmth that settled low in her stomach, the feeling simultaneously comforting, arousing, and just… delightful.
It would have been absolute torture to draw this out any longer. They had gone so long having to hold back from one another; the moment in the hallway after lockdown being the only time where they had really been able to let go and physically express their mutual attraction, and it had been so brief. Now, finally, they were alone. There weren't any guards around, no prying eyes, no boundaries beyond the scope of time they had together today, but that was the last thing Marcus wanted to think about right now. Right now, it was just him and Charlotte kissing passionately in the perfect, late morning glowing solitude of her living room; blinds drawn to shut out the rest of the world, the distant, calming hum of air conditioning in the background. Marcus couldn't recall if this exact tableaux had been one of his visualized possibilities, but as it unfolded right before him, it couldn't have been more fitting.
Relief and desire washed over him, warm and electrifying. His arms wrapped around her waist, pressing that much closer against her, hands splayed across her lower back as his fingers lightly moved over the fabric of her blouse. She tasted so good; it was impossible to stop kissing her once they had started. That cocktail of sexual chemistry was in full bloom; pheromones and adrenaline, dopamine and serotonin, and all of those scientific quantifiers that attempted to take the alluring mystery out of what was arguably the most powerful of human emotions. Marcus didn't give a damn about scientific quantifiers at this moment; all he knew was that he needed her, physically and emotionally; two things that in moments like these became one.
Through the haze of (not surprisingly) quickly escalating lust, he was faintly aware she was leading him towards the nearby couch, a fantastic idea, while they continued to kiss and actually managed to avoid breaking contact as he sat down and gently pulled her down next to him. Looking into her eyes, he cradled her face in his hands, right back at it to kiss her deeper yet; his breath catching in his throat. There was a fine line between rushing things and just doing what came naturally. He had to trust Charlotte that she would stop him if she became even in the least bit uncomfortable. So, with only the smallest amount of trepidation, he shifted his hands down to her hips, curving them partially around to her backside while he broke that deep kiss, only to turn his attentions to the graceful line of her neck. After all, he had told her this was what he had in mind next, and they both knew lunch wasn't on the docket any time soon.
A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
Charlotte smiled at his offer, but shook her head. Not only did she not want to inconvenience him, but she also didn’t want to spend their precious time together doing something as mundane as unpacking. True, she would be content to watch paint dry if it meant spending time with him, but who knew when they would get another opportunity like this. She wanted to thank him for the offer when she began exiting the car, but was overcome with speechlessness and sudden introspection, which resulted in her silence as she lead the way to the door. She had spent a lot of time thinking about this moment and anticipating what exactly would happen. Sometimes she imagined herself jumping him before they even reached the front door, other times she was plagued with images of them just sitting awkwardly in her living room. Past experience had no doubt resulted in her more negative assumptions of how things might turn out.
When she finally reached her front door she began fumbling with her keys in a painfully cliched awkward way. Even though she was resisting the urge to give up her bumbling efforts and just start kissing him, she still wondered if her eagerness would be enough. Her attraction to Marcus was something completely new to her and she had a feeling it would trump the usual preoccupations that plagued her when she was with romantic partners. Still, all she could suddenly think about was how disappointing he would probably find her eventually. Most men did and she couldn’t really blame them. It was unfathomably frustrating to be unable to escape her unrelenting unhealthy thoughts, even when she so desperately wanted to give all her attention to the undeniably handsome man at her side.
Trying her best to quell the threat of a self-loathing spiral, she finally got her door open. There wouldn’t be much to look at as far as a tour of her home went, and it was why she didn’t offer one. Her small living room was to the left, connected to the equally small kitchen. The only thing down the hall to their right was her bedroom and bathroom. Charlotte had always favored modest homes, but it never failed to make her a little self-conscious when she had company. She led the way to her living room before turning her attention to Marcus, her heartbeat picking up speed as she did so. “Would you like something to drink?” She couldn’t stop her eyes from falling on his lips when she asked the question.
What were you supposed to do when, at last, you found yourself alone with a person you were immensely attracted to, a person whom you had been sharing sexual tension thick enough that a knife might not even cut it for the past few weeks, or even longer? Well, for starters, you stood on their front porch with them and tried to fumble at helping them when they fumbled with their keys, only to fumble yourself back into silence, and ultimately not end up being any help whatsoever. Marcus was going to go ahead and blame it on the fact that Charlotte was now standing so close to him that every move was distracting; he could barely hold one thought for longer than a few seconds. Of course, he had played this moment, and its many outcomes, out in his head so many times that now that it was actually happening, it seemed as if he was going to wake up from it at any moment, and once again find himself in his dark room in the Manor, alone, and frustrated beyond comprehension.
So when Charlotte did manage to get the door open, and he took a few tentative steps inside her home, he took them with care, soaking in every detail of his new surroundings with a touch of wariness, and finding them very much as real as waking life could get. It wasn't a large home, but he hadn't expected as such; something big and ostentatious just didn't fit her. Even with as much money as he had had access to over the years, Marcus had never opted for what most could consider a large home. He had preferred lofts, more open artistic spaces. But there was something very comforting about this smaller house, a den one could easily lose themselves in, comfortable and private. "I like it," he told her truthfully, glancing around the living room as she led him into it and he took a few wandering steps around, if only to try and relieve some of the nervous tension he was feeling.
Her question hung in the air as he slowly turned around towards her, eyes meeting hers over the span of a few feet now separating them. His pulse was all at once thudding in his ears, and without even thinking twice about it, the words and actions came easily. He had hesitated before, not taken the initiative when he should have; he wasn't going to make that mistake again, not when their time alone today was so precious. "Maybe later," he said quietly, taking those few final steps to close the distance. His hand lifted to plant itself on the moulding of the door frame just beyond and above her, as he dipped his head down, lips grazing over hers before leaning in to kiss her fully.
A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
It was amazing really, how simply putting his hand on hers made her anxiety wash away instantly. She didn’t doubt that Marcus would be patient with her if she needed it, and she knew she could never really express how grateful she was for that. It was something that she had wanted a lot more of in past relationships. One boyfriend in particular had been rather pushy and the relationship hadn’t lasted long for obvious reasons. Considering where her thoughts had been straying towards in regards to Marcus, however, she didn’t anticipate it would be a problem. “You could never be too much,” she said honestly, her smile completely adoring. She put her other hand on top of his for a moment before placing her key in the ignition and starting up the car. “My place it is then.”
When they pulled out of the parking lot and finally started putting St. Louis Manor behind them Charlotte felt a weight lift. They were actually doing this. She turned to grin at him, still not quite believing they had pulled this off. “I feel I should warn you,” she said, partly joking, even though it was true. “I’ve been told many times that I drive like an old woman.” She was always annoying one driver or another on the road, but cautious driving was her permanent default. Thankfully the drive to her house was a relatively short one, so she probably wouldn’t embarrass herself too much.
The closer they got to her home the more she began to get nervous, but it wasn’t a bad sort of nervous. Though once she thought of the boxes that were still pilled haphazardly around her living room she felt stupid for not having thought to tidy up a bit. She warned him as they pulled into her driveway. “I apologize ahead of time for the state of things, I’m still unpacking and it’s a bit of a mess…” Her mother had always stressed how important it was to keep a clean home and be the perfect hostess. A small part of her felt a twinge of guilt that she was not living up to those expectations.
It was something really; the kind of trust that Charlotte was putting in him, not that she didn't have every right to do so. Marcus could be an outright cranky ass, and his self destructive addictions were now a rather moot point, but he was not the kind of man to take advantage of a woman. There were certain things he found utterly deplorable, and that was one of them. She must have seen that quality in him, because he couldn't imagine she would be doing this otherwise. He could only guess by some of her behaviors that men hadn't been particularly kind to her in the past. He wanted to be that exception, somebody she could eventually find full trust in; he didn't know how that was possible, given his own chronic problems, but he wanted to try....to keep trying.
Her assuring words and warm smile had a way of defusing even the most uncertain of his thoughts, and he gave her hand one last squeeze before removing it so she could get them moving forward. Out and away from the Manor's familiar grounds, Marcus found himself easily fixated on the passing Louisiana scenery, so different from what he was used to seeing. When she turned to smile at him and warn him about her overly cautious driving, he laughed, genuinely; buoyant away from the confines of the institution. "It's a good thing I'm not driving then, we would probably be a good twenty miles over the speed limit by now." A slight exaggeration, but not so far from the truth. She drove like an old woman, he drove like he was hoping to gain entry to Nascar; they were no doubt good for one another.
Just as Charlotte had said, the drive to her place wasn't far at all, something Marcus was now immeasurably thankful for. Not that he wasn't enjoying himself already, but there was no denying the nervous sort of anticipation they were both feeling, concentrated even more so in the confines of the car. He did his best not to fidget in his usual ways; drum his fingers on his leg or idly rub at his face. Instead, he focused on the anticipation, in a good way, and soon enough they were pulling into the driveway. Her apology for the state of the house was met with a small smile and a shake of his head. "It's okay, I don't mind. I can help you do some unpacking, if you want." If there was any guest she needn't worry at all about trying to impress with perfectly folded linens and sparkling silverware, it was him. He got out of the car, waiting for her to walk towards the front door before following. The last house he'd been in, some months ago, had been his brother's. An ambush of a visit that had ended with him being admitted to a mental institution. Something told him this visit was going to hold much fonder memories.

A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
Charlotte couldn’t stop stealing glances at him as they made their way to her car. The only thing that made their current forced propriety bearable was knowing they would only have to keep it up for a few more minutes. She found the still unfamiliar sensation of actually wanting to be close to someone inexplicably nice. Even simply brushing against his side while they walked sent a spark of warmth shooting through her. “You look especially handsome today,” she finally felt safe to murmur once they reached the parking lot. She snuck another at him while she said it, her eyes trailing approvingly over his features. Lord help her if they ventured out in public; she was so tired of keeping her distance and didn’t know how much longer she could keep it up.
When she had been given her tentative itinerary for the day Charlotte had wondered if that was really what Marcus had in mind. She was ready to do whatever he wanted, really just getting out of the manor and being with him was enough. But still, she couldn’t deny that getting him alone had been the most prevalent thought on her mind. Even though she knew full well he wanted her just as much as she wanted him Charlotte worried that inviting him to her home might be too forward. She had a fairly good idea of where such privacy had the potential to lead, and she didn’t want to make any assumptions about his desires.
They finally reached her car and, once they were both settled in their seats, she decided to try and fish around to get a better idea of his expectations. Charlotte turned to look at him, her hands resting on the wheel. “Well…” She began, groping for subtlety. “We could knock out a few things on your list…. or there’s always- Well, I don’t live far.” Yeah, that wasn’t quite the discreet delivery she had been shooting for. Her smile turned a little sheepish as she waited for his response; she was starting to feel the tiniest bit nervous.
If Marcus could have ran to Charlotte's car without: a) looking ridiculous, b) startling her, or c) potentially causing the guards at the front gate (who were no doubt still keeping an eye on him) to take it as a sign of a mental breakdown, he would have. As it was, he kept his long strides measured, his attention continuously wandering over to her to match her glances and smiles with his own. He was bad at taking compliments, really bad, but he managed to take hers with grace, and even a wider smile. "Thank you," he inclined his head and ran a hand down his chest to smooth out his shirt, as if suddenly self conscious it wasn't as pressed as he would have liked it. "You look......so beautiful," he hated how ridiculously elementary school that sounded, but he wasn't sure how to properly elaborate while still keeping his distance from her in a parking lot; he just hoped the desire in his gaze made up for it.
Once seated in her car, the reality that this was actually happening began to fully hit home. She was right here, next to him, and within moments they would be pulling through the Manor's ground gates, and into the free world of being able to act like two consenting adults. He fidgeted with his seat belt before actually managing to click it into place and turning back to look at her. "I don't really want to anything on that list, not today at least," he told her quietly, that small on his lips. "I had to tell them something though....you know...." He trailed off, the implications of her last sentence forcing him to pause in thought. He wasn't exactly sure how to tell her that more than anything he would like to go back to her place without it sounding like he had been hoping for this day to take on the appearance of a booty call, because that wasn't the case whatsoever. Funny, because with any other person he would have been as blunt as possible, but with Charlotte everything was different.
He could see she was starting to feel some anxiety, more than himself, and he reached out, placing his hand lightly over hers as it remained perched on the steering wheel. "All I want to do is spend time with you," he assured her. "I would like to see where you live, know more about you. No assumptions or pressures. It if gets to be.....too much, we can always go somewhere else, get some coffee, take a walk...." He held her gaze in silent anticipation, desperately hoping they were still on the same wavelength.
A Perfect Day : Marcus & Charlotte
nurse-evans:
Charlotte had never before spent so much time perfecting her appearance before work. Usually her makeup was minimal and her hair thrown up in a pony or loosely curl. Today, however, she wanted to make an effort. Instead of sticking solely to mascara she added eyeliner and even swept some eyeshadow on her lids. She then meticulously curled her hair and was, surprisingly, satisfied with the result. Her outfit was nothing new, a pencil skirt and a nice blouse, but she paired it with her favorite heels. It wasn’t a drastic change, but she actually felt the tiniest surge of confidence which certainly didn’t happen every day.
Ever since she had been notified that she was to supervise Marcus’ visit into town Charlotte had been downright giddy. She was almost always smiling and had even actively engaged in friendly conversion with her colleagues. Though she found herself occasionally worrying that perhaps they would get caught or something would go wrong, her positive mood simply couldn’t be punctured. It didn’t matter that they hadn’t really planned anything, just the idea of finally being able to do something as simple as hold hands without hiding it was honestly enough for her.
When Charlotte finally rounded the corner and entered the lobby she grinned back at Marcus, a nervous flutter starting in her chest. To say he cleaned up nice would be an understatement; he looked ever the gentleman and she couldn’t stop staring as she approached. How they had lucked out like this she didn’t know, but she planned to make the most of the few precious hours they had ahead of them. “Mr. Richter,” she greeted with a cheeky formality as she reached his side. “Are you ready for me to accompany you?” There was so much more she wanted to say -and do- but decided that should probably wait until they were officially in the clear.
God, she looked beautiful. She always looked beautiful, but Marcus could see that extra bit of confidence in her step as she approached him, and it was a beauty that went beyond even the stunning make up and the way she'd done her hair today. He wanted to tell her as much, but for the moment the words would have to stay were they were, etched on his smile and the light in his eyes as she drew closer. "Good morning, Nurse Evans," he returned her cheeky, knowing politeness with the extra dose of its double meaning. "I am, very ready." He stared down at her, catching himself still doing it some moments later to blink a few times and quickly gesture towards the guarded front doors. "Shall we?" The sooner they could get out of there, the better.
When asked to apply for the day pass, Marcus had been required to provide some general idea of what he had planned, so he had lied, of course, rattled off a list of local New Orleans attractions, a number of which he actually wouldn't mind seeing, if it hadn't been for the fact that all he really wanted to do was be alone with the woman assigned to accompany him during those said attractions. Maybe he would get to them at some point, right now it didn't matter. The truth was, they could spend the entire day together, safely closed away from the rest of world at her place, and he would be perfectly content.
Keeping up a proper 'patient to staff' distance, he followed Charlotte out the front doors, past the security checkpoint, the authenticity of his day pass getting one last look over before he was given the green light and they both emerged from the building into the bright light of the morning. The feeling was so liberating, even if he spent time out back on the grounds, even if this was only temporary, it was something good, and he knew he needed to focus on it. He squinted against the glare and turned his head to smile at her, a genuine smile. The Manor's elegantly swooping front staircase was their last threshold to pass, and it would have been very fittingly Southern of him to offer her his arm, but again, he had to refrain. Instead, he walked at her side, his hands casually set in his pockets, as they descended the stairs and headed for the parking lot. It would have been Marcus' choice to drive them, something he enjoyed doing, but there were a few things working against him there; his cars were thousands of miles away now, he had been brought here by someone else, and his license had been revoked for the time being, pending drug charges. Charlotte would have to take the wheel.
