There was muffled whispers coming from the tables surrounding his empty chemistry station, students were craning their heads to get a look at what was going on outside the door of the classroom, even Professor Flute seemed to have forgotten all about his lesson plans choosing to linger by the door as well.
Suddenly the door flew open, narrowly clipping the aging professor as he jumped back. Leaving Kevin Keller in the door frame, his eyes locking on Jugheads as he nervously chewed his lip. In seconds flat Jughead Jones had abandoned his precious laptop, thrown his chemistry goggles to the floor and was pushing past the gaggle of students.
“Betty.” That single word raced through his mind as he followed Kevin’s hurried steps down the hall. It had to be Betty, there would be no other reason for Kevin to come and fetch him with the look of absolute fear in his eyes. Jesus Christ he could feel his heart pumping out of his chest. Please god, or whoever it is up there, let her be okay, just… let her be okay.
There was a crowd of students all backing away and clearing a path, Sheriff Keller was the first person he saw, confusion lining the older mans features. Archie was speaking quickly to Principal Weatherbee, his hands tugging at his suit.
Then he saw it, clear as day.
Betty Cooper was being arrested.
Blonde ponytail, light blue sweater ,and her head tucked into her chest, the beautiful girl next door was being escorted down the halls by sheriff Keller. She wasn’t making eye contact with Anyone but in an instant it all clicked into place.
Jughead pushed past everyone, nearly barreling over the Sheriff to clutch Betty’s face in his hands.
“What’s happening? What are you doing Betty?” The beanie wearing boy rushed out, eyes scanning her face for some kind of answer, all he saw was the quick flicker they cast towards Sheriff Keller. She leaned forward wrapping her arms around him in the illusion of a hug, she whispered quick and hastily in his ear.
“I’ll be fine. I told them it was me who found the car, just me. That I found the jacket by myself, you were just helping me. They wanted to Lin this on you for no reason and I couldn’t let that happen. I don’t want you dragged into this. I’ll be out by the end of the day, I have no record and they can’t hold me for substantial evidence, they have no proof. I’ll talk to you later. Stay out of this Jughead. It’s easier this way.” Dropping her lips to his cheek Betty proceeded to follow Keller with a nod.
Archie was still screaming at Principal Weatherbee and Kevin was trailing behind his father speaking so quickly Jughead couldn’t keep up.
He wasn’t sure of anything except one thing at this moment.
Betty Cooper had just taken the fall to save Him.
Oh god, she had saved Jughead Jones.
