Inside the Police Station
14 Jan ’19 – 09:20
More than an hour had passed after Eliana’s talk with Officer Friedman earlier and Detective Kingston still hasn’t showed up. Whatever case she’s overseeing must’ve been serious if it took her that long in returning to the station. But still, Eliana waited patiently in her seat in front of the officer’s desk, only standing up for a few minutes every now and then to have a smoke.
The body from the crime scene arrived half an hour earlier, enclosed in a cadaver bag. The crime techs brought it straight to the lab downstairs without so much of a glance at her. Eliana resisted the urge to ask for details, knowing they’re not going to give her any.
Officer Friedman, thankfully, remained focus on his work even when she goes outside. He kept his phone in his pocket, and was alert to answer the few civilians who ask for help in the station. She’s itching to help herself, but she knows she can’t do anything yet until she talks with Detective Kingston first. As far as anyone is concerned, she’s still an outsider in this police station and this town.
As Eliana was finishing the cup of coffee the officer made and offered her, a man stepped outside of the laboratory. He is wearing a crisp pair of slacks and pressed button-down shirt underneath his lab coat, and was distractedly making coffee for himself. While he was waiting for the machine to finish brewing, he turned his attention and looked around the station. Apparently only noticing her then, the man’s head slightly tilted to the side, as if in thought.
Turning to the police officer in front of her, Eliana asked, “Officer Friedman, who’s that?” She motioned with her head towards the man in the pantry subtly.
Looking at who she’s talking about, the boy turned his body around and answered, “Oh, that’s Doctor Verda. He’s our pathologist.” Seeing that Dr. Verda is already looking at the pair, Officer Friedman called out to him to introduce the two of them. “Hey, Doctor Verda,” he motioned with his hands, making the doctor raise his eyebrows in question. “This is Detective Langford. She said she was transferred here from the big city. Do you have an idea what time Detective Kingston will arrive?”
His curiosity piqued a little, Dr. Verda approached them. “I’m sorry, I don’t,” he answered the officer. “Is that true? There’s gonna be a new detective around?” He addressed his question to the detective.
“Seems like it, doctor,” Eliana said. She stood up and extended her hand towards the pathologist. “Detective Eliana Langford. I’m from the Metropolis Police Department. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
Dr. Verda shook her extended hand firmly. “No need to be so formal, detective. It seems like we’ll be workmates from now on. I’m Doctor Solomon Verda.” The doctor smiled warmly at her and added, “I came from the city myself, you know, before finally settling down here with my family.”
Instantly feeling a little affinity for the man in front of her, Eliana cracked a little smile at that. After withdrawing her hand, she asked, “Oh? And how was the adjustment from the big city to the small town?”
“Well, having my family with me helps a lot. And I’m really more of a quiet and calm environment kind-of guy than the hustle and bustle of the city.”
Oof. Family. The concept’s a little far-fetched for Eliana. “Surely you must miss some of the things that the city can provide?”
Dr. Verda thought for a few seconds before answering. “Convenience stores,” he snapped his fingers. “Can’t find more of that except in the city. In this town, most of the shop is already closed before 8 in the evening.”
“That’s a bummer,” Eliana responded. As someone who’s used to patrolling in the night and having convenience stores easily accessible all the time, it’s kind of a letdown to find out this information.
The doctor chuckled a little at that. “Aside from that, I’m good. Wayhaven’s home now.” His eyes falling at the cup of coffee in Officer Friedman’s desk and her stuff in the chair, Dr. Verda inquired, “How long have you been waiting for Detective Kingston now?”
Eliana checked her wristwatch before answering, “Almost 2 hours now, doctor.”
“That must’ve been a surprise for you. Your first day at work was spent waiting for the detective.”
Oh, you have no idea, she thought, but bit back from saying it out loud.
“Although that’s not really unusual in this town. For as long as I’ve worked here, this is the only time we’ve had a murder case. It’s not an exaggeration to say that nothing really that exciting happens in this town,” Dr. Verda continued. “Anyway, let me shoot Detective Kingston a message and inform her of this. It was nice meeting you, Detective Langford.”
“Thanks, Dr. Verda. Nice to meet you too.”
Dr. Verda waved a little before going back to the pantry to get his coffee. The man gave a final nod before returning to his laboratory.
At least he seems nice, Eliana thought as she sat back down on the stool, resuming her wait for the town’s detective.
At the Station
10:10
Ellara checks her time, suddenly realizing just how long it took her to arrive at the station. The traffic was heavier than usual and she's probably making a bad impression at the new detective for being so late. Her eyes go to the drink and bread in her hand before she pushes the doors open. At least I have my lunch with me already.
Turning around, she first saw Douglas tensely sitting on his station.
"Glad you aren't using your phone today, Officer Friedman," she says genuinely happy at the younger's sudden change today.
"Detective! I'm glad you're already here." Douglas greeted, his voice laced with something aside from his usual enthusiasm. Elle can't quite figure it out but she dismissed it just as her eyes landed on the woman sitting on the chair facing the younger's desk.
Eliana's ears instantly perked up, hearing Officer Friedman addressing the woman who had just entered the precinct as "Detective". Finally, she thought. I was beginning to wonder if she'll ever show up.
"I see you have a complainant, huh?" She asks, pretending not to know who the woman is. The stranger suddenly stands, eyes darting at her way with an eyebrow raised. "Hello Detective Kingston, Wayhaven PD. How can we help you, ma'am?" Ellara says with a smile. She holds herself back from laughing just to see how the other would react.
"Detective Kingston, this is Detective Langford. Wayhaven's additional detective," The young officer intercepts gesturing to the woman in front.
Is she messing with me? Eliana's right eyebrow remained cocked, but she decided to drop the matter for now. Introductions must come first, so she can finally start working.
Standing up to her full height, Eliana cleared up the snark that was bubbling in the back of her throat, strode forward and extended her hand. "You must be Detective Ellara Kingston. Detective Eliana Langford of Metropolis Police Department. My superiors said I was to be transferred here for the time being." She inspected the other detective with a scrutinizing gaze, surprised that she's a lot smaller than she imagined. Her eyes, the same color as her’s - hazel - is filled with amusement and curiosity. Her light brown hair is done up on a ponytail. Detective Langford made a quick scan at other detective's clothes, wondering how she'll be able to run and pursue a perp in those shoes. She noted that Detective Kingston is wearing platform boots with matching tweed coordinates. I thought I was the one who came from the city here. Why does she look like she's up for a picnic or something? Her eyes stopped for a moment at the tea and croissant in Detective Kingston's hand. Well, it looks like there's the reason she took so goddamn long to return here.
Ellara watched as the other woman's eyes scanned her from her feet up to the top of her head, smiling despite the nervous rattling in her heart right now. The latter is towering over her, and Elle would easily cower upon the sight of her if she didn't know the woman yet. And there's also a weird feeling inside her, a feeling she can't describe with words.
How can someone look so intimidating and not feel like it?
Ellara shrugs her thoughts, focusing her mind back into the present. Her smile never left her face even when Detective Langford had been looking at her with so much disdain and confusion in her face. It makes her want to play with the latter more.
"Yes, that's me. I'm Ellara Kingston, but you can call me Elle, everyone does! However, detective...? There must be a mix up," Ellara says, tone light but with confusion laced with it as well. She extends her arms to shake the latter's but her smile turns into a frown.. "Captain Sung would've told me about you being transferred here otherwise.
Eliana is confused about the look Detective Kingston is giving her. Sure, there's the familiar sense of someone being intimidated with her. But there's something else too, something she can't quite put a finger into yet.
Focusing instead on the situation at hand, her right eyebrow returned back to its cocked state, her lips thinning into a straight line. "I'd prefer to stick with Detective Kingston, if that's alright with you. We're professional co-workers and that's more fitting, I think." She paused for a moment and continued, "Can you help point me to where your captain's office is? Or his current whereabouts right now? I'd like to speak to him personally." She had already slung her bag back to her shoulders, and is now in the process of hooking her helmet in her arm.
Ellara's eyes widen at the sudden mention of the captain and the detective's actions, making her raise her hand in the air a little, "No, you can't. He's playing golf with the mayor," she says. "Also, I was just kidding. I received the memo a few minutes ago." Ellara once again smiles and shrugs.
"I see," Eliana said simply. Truth be told, her patience has already worn thin. But she knows she can't repeat what she did with Officer Friedman earlier. For one, Eliana's afraid that if she suddenly pulls with that much force at the smaller woman, she might break apart. And second, she doesn't want to have a misdemeanor case in this town, especially if it's against her co-workers. No, it's not worth staining her spotless record over Detective Kingston's joke.
I'm going to drop this for now, but mark my words, I'm gonna be the one laughing next time.
"Welcome to Wayhaven PD, Detective Langford!" Ellara says loudly, getting the attention of everyone in the precinct– basically just Douglas, and a few other officers.
The people greet their new member just like how they do every time. Enthusiastic, and with joy. Everyone here treats each other as family, and she hopes that the detective will feel the same. Though it would probably take the latter some time to adjust as she just nods at all the greetings.
A person of a few words, huh?
Ellara decided that she probably had extended the welcome greeting too much so she gets Eliana's attention back.
"Come, I'll show you the office."
The taller detective followed Detective Kingston to the office wordlessly after accepting the greetings and welcomes of the other police officers with a simple nod of her head.
She watched as the smaller detective opened the door to a locked room, revealing a small office. Oh great, the bathroom in my apartment in the city is bigger than this office. The room has just enough space to fit a file cabinet, a desk, and a simple two-person sofa. Eliana's eyes did one full sweep across the room and landed on the woman in front of her, her face devoid of any reaction.
"So, this is it! I'm sorry I know it must be smaller than what you're used to, having worked in the big city," Detective Kingston said apologetically.
"No worries. It's alright. It could be a lot worse."
"Well, good! Because we're supposed to share this office. We just need to find you a desk and another file cabinet and then voilà!" Ellara exclaimed with that bright smile of hers.
Well, fuck me. I spoke too soon.
It doesn't matter. There's a case. We should focus on that.
"I see," Eliana said again. She feels like this will not be the last time that she'll say that phrase in this town. In many ways, this small, quiet town is a lot weirder than the city. She knows that there will be more things to come that she'll just be forced to accept and agree, whether she wants to or not.
Placing down her things on the sofa, Eliana crossed her arms to her chest and turned to the smaller detective, who was also placing down her things at her desk. "Detective Kingston, I heard that there's been a murder. Can I ask you what details we currently have on that?" Eliana straightforwardly asked. She had always hated people who beat around the bush.
"Oh right! I was meaning to talk to you about that," Ellara replies just as she sits on her chair. Smile ceasing at the obvious straightforwardness of the woman. I haven't even eaten my lunch yet, poor foodies. "The victim is an unidentified tall, blonde woman who has unusual scratch wounds. Her cause of death is still unknown but I'm pretty sure that she's not from around here. Other than that, i'm afraid we don't have much information yet..."
Yes, useless information. I myself don't know where to lead with this. Kicking the thoughts away after a sip from her tea, she continued speaking.
"The statement from the witnesses will be reported later, and I'm actually about to head to the lab to know more about her." She stops, searching for a reaction on Eliana's face but the latter remains expressionless. "You should come with me so we can hear about it together. Oh, maybe I should give you a tour, too?" Ellara smiles, her eyes twinkling at her own suggestion.
Fuck, we haven't got even a small lead yet.
"Of course, Detective," Eliana answered, internally wondering what else she hadn't seen from the precinct aside from the inside of Dr. Verda's lab. Her eyes have already looked at every side of the station when she was waiting for Detective Kingston earlier, but she decided not to say anything for now. She needs to establish rapport if she's to work with the smaller detective. "Why don't you take the lead?"
Smiling at Eliana's suggestion, Detective Kingston stood up from her chair, her tea and croissant still in her hand. "Follow me, Detective Langford."
It took them less than 5 minutes to have the full tour around the precinct. Ellara introduced the new detective to some of the officers around. There's really not much to see, but I already knew that. God, this is gonna be a long reassignment, Eliana sighed to herself.
"Well, this is our last stop. The precinct's lab," Detective Kingston said with a flourish. "You've met Dr. Verda earlier, right?"
Yes. Officer Friedman introduced us."
"Douglas?!" Detective Kingston exclaimed. "Oh, well, that's good. At least he's taking his job seriously."
Eliana had to bite back a snicker from escaping her lips from that comment.
"Let's go see what Verda has to say," Detective Kingston declared. She shoved the remaining croissant in her mouth and swiped some of the crumbs away from her clothes before bumping the heavy door of the doctor's lab with one hip. She didn't even bother to stop and take a look at the No Food or Drink Inside sign beside the door, her cup of tea still clutched in her hand.
Sighing at the other detective's blatant disregard for rules, Eliana shook her head and followed Detective Kingston inside the chilly lab.
Inside the Laboratory
10:30
The white-tiled walls greeted the two of them just as they stepped into the lab. It was a clean room with only the silver machines at the edges completing the ensemble. They saw Verda sitting on his metal desk at the corner of the room.
"Hey, Verda." Ellara greets brightly, and with a smile. The doctor turns to greet her back with a nod before a voice cuts through their little interaction.
"I don't know how you work down here." Eliana says seeing how the doctor didn't even have his gloves on, a cup of drink is noticeable sitting on the table beside him.
"It's the first time I actually got to work, Detective Langford." The doctor turns to look at her and grin.
"I thought you're not supposed to bring drinks in here?" Eliana says, the careless disregard to the rules getting into her like a whiplash.
"It's a habit I picked up working from the city," He answers, tone bright and all. "You are one of the good-natured detectives from the city then?"
"Not really, no," Eliana snickers and shrugs, making the doctor grin.
Ellara watched the interaction, feeling glad that the detective is at least making conversation with their pathologist. Must be because they are both from the city?
A few seconds of quiet descended upon them before Ellara decided to break it, just as her eyes landed on the body covered by a white sheet on a table.
"You haven't started the autopsy yet?" She asks, walking towards the body.
The doctor shakes his head, "No, but..." he pauses and purses his lips, "I found something you might need." He spins around and lifts an evidence bag from a nearby counter.
"You found her phone! They couldn't see it at the scene," she says, getting the bag from his hand.
"It was in her boot."
The three of them looked down at the woman, her skin now a grey-white, her lips so pale that they aren't even noticeable right now.
"We really need to find her identity-" the detectives said in unison. Their heads turned, eyes meeting each other. Both surprised at having said the same thing at the same time.
"...so we can inform her family."
"...so we can find her killer."
Ellara and Eliana continued respectively, earning confused looks from the pathologist that stands in front of them.
"Well, I'm glad you care more about your people, Detective Kingston. At least more than some detectives from the city." Verda says, throwing a quick glance at Eli. "But you're both right. Finding her identity must be the first step."
Ellara half smiles at the compliment, appreciating it despite not knowing if she deserves to be given the praise while Eliana just let the comment fly by her.
"There's not much I can tell you as of the moment." Verda continues. "Though the bruises in her wrists and ankles are noticeable."
"She was tied down?" Eliana joins the conversation.
"So it would seem..." he answered, voice trailing off at the obvious sympathy for the woman.
Ellara tightens her hold on the phone as she opens it through the evidence bag. The screen opened and she felt relief when she saw that it wasn't locked by any password. Flicking through it and opening her contacts, she didn't see much aside from the victim's family, workmates, and a few friends. Checking the logs and messages, she noticed that there weren't much in there too.
"She obviously didn't go out much." Verda says as he is glancing through the phone, too.
"Poor girl," Ellara says as she continues to explore the victim's phone, ending up in her gallery. "She must've been less of a target if she weren't so isolated."
"Maybe," Verda says with a shrug, "But that might have not been why she was targeted."
"I agree." Eliana chirps.
The quiet once again fills the room as Ellara swipes through the photos. Until one particular picture catches her attention. The photo was blurred, but thanks to the stained walls and the crack metal beams, she was able to recognize the place, "This was the last photo she took. It's from the Farris Warehouse at the edge of the town."
"You think she managed to capture where she was murdered?"
"Possibly."
"Will you go to the warehouse then?" Verda asked.
"I will. After I finished up the paper works of course," Ellara says and with a smile once again.
"Instead of going alone, how about you bring Detective Langford along then? Must be good for her to be familiarized as early as now." Verda suggested.
"I was just about to ask her," Ellara grins and turns to the new detective, "Are you up for an adventure?"
Eliana's right eyebrow quirked up again at Detective Kingston's choice of words. "Sure, sounds good," she shrugged nonchalantly.
"Are you two gonna be alright?" Verda asks suddenly.
"We've got our radio if we need backup, and Tina also patrolled there the other day. It's impossible that there's still a deranged murderer hanging in there."
The doctor frowns in concern. "Be careful. Both of you please."
"You worried about us, Verda?" Ellara asks with a teasing tone, throwing in a smirk at the pathologist's way.
"You are about the best person I've worked for, and besides, Detective Langford here has been much a delight," he replies with a smile. "I don't fancy getting used to someone else."
Eliana gave a nod at the doctor's way and mumbled a small "Thanks," that didn't go unnoticed.
Ellara's laughter echoes in the room as she makes her way out of the lab, making sure that Eliana is following closely behind. For the first time that day, Ellara actually felt alright.
Inside the Station
10:45
Being out of the lab felt like a reward somehow as the cold Ellara was feeling dissipated into thin air. She looks back making sure that Eliana was able to follow along as she made her way back into the office again.
Eliana looks back up just as Ellara brings her eyes back to the front. Why is this precinct so quiet and boring? She thinks to herself, her mind unconsciously wandering back into her workplace before. Back home, she never had a down time during work hours. There's always a criminal to arrest, and a crime to solve. The fact that everything around here is moving so slow is making her feel cooped up and restless. Surely, her past captain had good intentions moving her here. Otherwise, why would he do that? It would be dumb to send off the youngest most skillful detective away.
Whatever the reason is, fuck it. I deserve to be somewhere more developed than this town. Won't exactly get any recognition, working here. Well, maybe if they can solve the case first.
"I hope you've been settling well so far, Detective Langford," Ellara says with a smile, once again taking the seat behind her desk as the latter sits herself on the couch.
"I am," Eliana replies nonchalantly, fishing her phone out of her pocket and typing in the little information they have so far.
"So…" she heard Ellara speak from the far end of the room. “What's-" the woman was about to ask something when the door opened.
"Good afternoon, detectives." Captain Sung stands in front of the door, giving Elle a glance for greeting before he turns into the new detective and approaches her. "Detective Langford, I assume?"
Eliana stood from her seat and strode forwards, extending her arm in greeting. "Yes, that's right. Pleasure to meet you." After a quick scan at the man's posture and clothing, Eliana continued. "And you must be Captain Sung?"
The captain just nodded in affirmation, already busy fetching something from his pocket. "I'm just here to give you your badge and gun while you're working here in our town and ask how you're settling here?"
Eliana checked the handgun and was surprised to see it in good condition. Afterwards, she clipped her badge in her belt and the gun to her holster and answered with a simple, "Fine, so far," before crossing her arms across her chest again.
"Well, that's good. According to the Mayor, another desk set, and a cabinet will arrive later this evening to accommodate Detective Langford for the time being." Captain Sung then turns to Ellara. "I can see that you've been letting her catch up immediately. Nice work, Detective Kingston."
"Thanks, Captain. Detective Langford has been cooperative." Ellara throws a smile at Eliana's way, making the other's eyebrow raise.
After a short conversation between the people in the office, Captain Sung bid the two detectives farewell before walking out of the police station, telling them to work with and help each other to solve the murder case.
"Now that's out of the way, what say you we decrease some of this paperwork that needs filing, Detective Langford?" Ellara said with a charming smile, hoping that the taller detective is at least a little more patient than her in paper works.

At the Crime Scene
14 Jan ’19 – 08:00
Heading straight into the crime scene after the morning walk with Sol may not have been so ideal.
Ellara heaves out a heavy breath before she throws a quick glance at the mirror to check herself. Then she smiled, a very bright one, "Damn girl, you be looking good like that in a crime scene, huh?" She laughs to herself as she almost reached her destination.
Arriving at the crime scene, she noticed that townspeople are already gathered around. Some passersby, but mostly technicians. The passersby are probably just snooping around for gossip-worthy information. Ellara does a quick scan at the crowd, only to realize that they completely blocked the only remaining parking space in the alleyway.
Rolling down the windows of the car, she puts her elbow and her head out. A smile plastered on her face, "Hey everyone! Can you move a little for me, pretty please? I'm the detective assigned in this case."
The people just looked at her with a confused gaze, exchanging glances and murmurs with one another as they reluctantly moved aside. Huh, bet they still see me as the twig-armed officer. She just shrugged before she continued driving further down the alleyway.
At last, she was able to park her car.
Pushing her light brown hair back, she went out of her car, immediately feeling the cold air hit upon her thin frame. She holds her coat close and hugs herself with it. She makes her way to the police line seeing a familiar face guarding it.
Ellara was greeted by Officer Len, a part time volunteer on the scant Wayhaven police force standing with a slight hunch on his posture. The old man looks up at her, finally croaking out a greeting.
"Credentials please, miss."
"Aww come on, Len! You know we don't have to be formal anymore! We've been workmates since I first joined!" Elle jokes around but the man's stoic expression suggests that he doesn't share the same humor as her.
"Sorry. Mayor's orders."
With a sigh, the woman reaches for her ID and her badge inside her coat. She shows it briefly to the person that stands before her, waiting for his nod of approval.
"All good, Detective; step on through."
Detective, huh?
Ellara couldn't help but grin as she easily slid under the barrier and let herself into the crime scene. It's the first time a colleague addressed her with that title. And the promotion is still too good to be true for her. Besides, she didn't even expect to have it as early as now.
So what if the only training she ever got was the one hour lecturing time with the mayor? It isn't that bad. The most important thing is that she passed the exam, and that the police captain has personally selected her as a replacement for Detective Reele. It is truly a reward of its own. Sure it came to her like a surprise, but it's a happy one at that. A perfect gift for her for this year's Christmas. The promotion was made hastily, but she is already so excited to get used to her new life now.
"Finally here then, Detective Kingston." A voice cuts through her train of thoughts. The sound of the familiar voice was enough to make her glance up. It was her former partner, Tina Poname. The officer strides toward her with a grin on her face, "Not much of a surprise they're all gathered here." She says gesturing at the crowd behind the detective.
"Right. Especially when this is the biggest that happened in years." Ellara shrugged.
"And it's your first case as Wayhaven's detective, most of all!" Tina grins and pats her on her shoulders. "Speaking of, how's the first day going for you, lovely?"
"Oh, it's all good! Although..." she trails off finally seeing where the scene technicians are checking, "I kind of wish my career didn't start with death."
"Well yeah, but don't take it as an omen or anything!" Tina added but Ellara's attention was already on the techs busy taking photos of the scene.
"Excuse me!" A voice gets both their attention, "I need to know what is going on! I demand to know!" Tina's grip on her belt tighten as Elle draws out a breath before her lips curves into a smile yet again.
"I'm the landlord of these apartments." The old man in the crisp grey suit added.
Ellara approaches him with a slight smile, expression friendly enough for him to not panic even more. "I'm sorry, sir. But we can't give out details at this time." She says, tone as light and as polite as possible.
She felt Tina's hand on her shoulder, "You go on ahead; I'll deal with him. It's not your job to settle this lot any more, Detective."
Ellara throws her a grateful nod and an apologetic smile before going around the scene once again. This time, she makes her way into where the body is. And no, it isn't such an easy task with the amount of technicians around. Almost bumping a few people on her way, Ellara was able to reach the body.
"I'm sorry this had to be your first case, Ellara." The doctor turns around and looks up at her as he says this. She just smiled to let him know that she's doing alright despite the situation. "It's pretty amazing to think I delivered you as a baby," the pause and the sad smile that the doctor gave went unnoticed as the woman's focus remained on the body. Turner shrugs it off and forces himself to smile and continue what he was saying earlier. "...and now here you are. My peer." The pride in Dr. Turner's voice is still evident despite the gloom that surrounds them.
"I'm glad you think so, Dr. Turner. I hope I'd be able to do well," she says, tone light and a smile painted on her face. "I wanted to see her up close and investigate her further." She added gesturing to the lifeless body that lies at their feet.
"Hold on, I'll turn it over for you. I think the city boys are done," He said, throwing a quick glare over the technicians from Metropolis.
Wayhaven is a small and peaceful town. There is barely a need for people like them. So instead of assigning people for the job, they get aid from the big city whenever a major crime happens. Obviously, the city guys and the townspeople aren't getting along well. Well they never needed them until now. This is the biggest one Ellara had experienced her whole lifetime, and she doesn't even know how to take it.
Oh well, I'll still solve this one.
And it's one thing she's confident about. With a shrug she dismissed her thought, just right at the moment as Turner rolls the body a little to turn her over.
Ellara winced a little as a light thud reached her ears the moment the body toppled over. It revealed a blonde-haired woman, with a lot of deep bruises on her freckled skin. Sure her eyes are closed, but she doesn't look peaceful at all. She scans the woman further and saw the deep, ragged gashes that run down the woman's forearms.
Just who would be able to tear skin like this? Ellara clenched her jaw as she held her gaze on the body. It's something even Dr. Turner had noticed.
"Not easy seeing your first body, is it?" The doctor now stands by her side, eyeing her with much sympathy in his eyes.
"I just can't believe that there has been a murder here. At Wayhaven." Her words come out like a confused mumble, but it's enough to be heard by the latter.
"I know what you mean. The last time there was violence in this town was back in my grandfather's day," he says, shaking his head.
"Can you give me the time of death?" Ellara asked.
"That's not my call to make. That's your man's job back at the lab," he replies, disdain evident in his voice. The doctor is obviously not pleased to be passing the job to yet another 'city boy'. "I'm only here to make sure that the body is really dead."
"Make sure 'she' is dead. She was a person, not just a body," Ellara suddenly says.
Turner immediately nods and gives an apologetic smile, "Of course; you're right," he says as he turns to face the techs behind him. "You can take her away now." He then strides away to where his black sports car is parked. "Goodluck with it all, Ellara."
"Find out anything useful from the doc?" Tina asks as she slides on her side. Both of them watching as the tech guys covered the body with white cloth.
"We'll know more when Verda takes a look at her," I reply. "Are you okay getting statements from the witnesses?"
"Sure," she replies. "I've already started on it."
Ellara gives a nod of appreciation. "Call Douglas if you need help."
"I'd have better luck getting help from a parrot than from that boy," Tina scoffs as she gets the pad from her pocket. She moves away to continue interviewing the witnesses.
With the crowd gathering around the crime scene, Ellara doesn't know if she'd still be able to gather much from here. So she decided to walk back into the car and head back into the station. When yet another familiar voice calls her.
"Officer Kingston— I mean, Detective!"
Ellara rolls her eyes at the voice before she turns around and sees the person it belongs to. "Bobby Marks," she greets. His name rolling off her tongue quite easily. "Why am I not surprised that you're here?"
Because why would she be? Bobby being the journalist that he is, jumps into every gossip– whether it's true or not. For a journalist in a small town, this is the first real news he would ever get close to. So no, she isn't surprised to see him here. He's not someone she would openly avoid, but she'd wish he wouldn't encounter him that much. Valid since the man had a reputation of being a pain in the ass.
Also, unfortunately, he happens to be Ellara's one and only ex. She sighs to herself thinking just how thankful she is for getting out of that toxic relationship. Bobby is a predator who steals her essays back in college days. And he did that while they were dating!
But Ellara has no issue over it now. If anything, they are civil. She treats everyone like a friend, so why can't he be one? Not as if she ever holds grudges. She plans to keep it professional in these settings though, something the man could never do.
Bobby holds out his phone to her like a microphone, "What has happened here, can you tell–"
"No, I can't," Ellara says with a smile, pushing the phone back despite Bobby's continuous trudging.
"Nothing at all?"
"No, nothing at all," Ellara answers as she dipped beneath the barrier, getting much closer into her car.
"Not even for an old friend?" Ellara shudders at the statement. She sighs, standing back up and meeting his gaze.
"Since we're such 'old friends,' you should believe me when I say no," Ellara replies. He steps closer anyway, in obvious hope he's gotten under her skin enough to make her crack. It didn't.
"Come on now, Ellara," Bobby coos. "You wound me with that kind of talk."
"Goodbye, Bobby."
And that was the last she said before she entered her car leaving Bobby yelling pleas through her window. She decided to turn her radio on and check her phone before she goes.
14 Jan ’19 – 07:50
Quaint.
It’s the first word that came to Eliana’s mind when she saw the façade of the police station. It’s tiny, compared to what she’s used to in the big city, but it has its own charm. And true to her expectations, the station was quiet. Almost no one is coming or going, just the officers going on about their day and their patrols. The other police detective that she’s going to be working with hasn’t shown up yet. Maybe they’re running late.
Eliana was leaning on her motorcycle across the street, finishing up her coffee, while quietly observing the police station going on about its business. The coffee from the bakery shop in the town square was good, so maybe it’ll help make this reassignment not so tedious. She also managed to buy some hair dye so she can cover up her showing roots later after her work hours.
After throwing the used paper cup in the trash bin nearby, Eliana slung her bag on her shoulder and hooked her helmet in her arm. She took a deep breath and made her way towards the entrance of the police station, hoping against all hope that this will not be a boring day.
Inside the Police Station
14 Jan ’19 – 08:00
Stepping into the threshold of the station, Eliana’s eyes immediately zeroed in on the police officer in the front desk. The boy didn’t even notice her arrive, his attention focused solely on the mobile game he was playing. The sound effects of the game was the only noise that can be heard around the police station. No one was around except the police officer, and he wasn’t even paying attention to work.
Biting back the irritation, Eliana approached the officer’s desk, her walking and posture tensed. I know that this is a small town and that nothing happens here too much, but seriously? During working hours? Her mind was spouting curses into whatever god deemed her to be relocated in this town.
She took a deep breath to calm her irritation before she spoke. “Excuse me?”
Eliana thought the officer didn’t hear him, as he showed no signs of acknowledgement. A few more seconds had passed before the boy replied.
“Yes?” He said simply, not even bothering to look at her.
“I’m looking for Detective Ellara Kingston, is she around?”
Eyes still glued at his phone, he answered, “Uhhh…No. She hasn’t arrived yet.”
Eliana’s patience is becoming thinner by the second, and this good-for-nothing police officer is not helping the situation. Why isn’t she around yet? Does she not know about the addition to her staff? Why must I be relocated here? Why me? These questions swirling around her head, but she pushed all of them aside at the moment. “Do you know what time she’ll arrive? Or if she is currently pre-occupied with some other thing?” Gritting her teeth, she asked.
“No.”
That’s it.
Like adding fuel to the flame that is Eliana’s temper, the officer’s nonchalant answer and professionalism stoked Eliana’s anger like blacksmiths stoke their forges. Slamming down her helmet on the table – causing the officer to jump back in surprise – Eliana grabbed his phone and slammed it down on the table in front of him. The police officer’s eyes widened, apparently only registering her intimidating aura at this exact moment. Grabbing the collars of his uniform, she yanked the officer closer to her across the table and got to his face. “I’m gonna ask the question again one last time, and I’m giving you this advice for free. ‘Think carefully of your answer before you say it’,” or else. Although she didn’t really add the “or else” in the end, judging by the look on the boy’s face, he got the message clearly enough.
“I- I think a case came up. O-Officer Poname, the other p-police officer here, asked me to tell D-Detective Kingston if she ever arrives here e-early or something,” he stuttered. “I don’t know what time she’ll arrive though. I’m so sorry.”
The boy looks close to tears now, so Eliana released his collar with a huff and looked at him sternly. How this boy did even became a police officer? While the boy was busy straightening back his uniform, she saw the name indicated on the pin of his left breast pocket.
Friedman.
Great, I just scared the Mayor’s son. Groaning internally, Eliana bit her lip and dialed down the intensity of her gaze towards the boy. I guess that answers the ‘How’.
Remembering the boy’s answer earlier, she repeated the words in her head. A case. There’s a case. Perhaps there’s some hope for this town after all.
I just hope it’s not one of those boring vandalism and destruction of property cases.
Calming her voice, Eliana asked Officer Friedman a question again. “Do you know what the case is about?”
“M-murder, if I remember correctly.”
Murder.
Oh, if only people brightens up when they receive a good news, Eliana would’ve lit up like a Christmas tree. She’s not really happy about people getting killed, but this kind of case would really boost up her career and credibility if they manage to solve this case. Assuming that it’s really murder though. She’s still doesn’t fully trust Officer Friedman’s attention to detail and information-gathering skills. After all, he’s already telling her these information without even asking her who she is and what right she has to ask about these things.
Not really wanting to end up on the wrong foot around her potential co-workers, she cleared her throat before speaking. “I apologize for what I did earlier. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Detective Eliana Langford. I used to work at Metropolis Police Department but have been reassigned here, due to unclear reasons. I hope we can move past what happened earlier.” She extended her hand towards the slightly trembling police officer.
Hesitating for a few seconds, Officer Friedman slowly reached up her shaking hand towards the detective’s extended one. “I-I’m Officer Douglas Friedman. I’m really sorry about not paying a-attention earlier.” He shook the woman’s hand once and immediately let go, afraid of unintentionally pissing her off again.
“Don’t worry about it, Officer Friedman. Apology accepted.”
“C-can I ask you a question, Detective?”
“Shoot.”
Wringing his hands and trying to phrase his words carefully, he took a big gulp and ask, “I’m sorry for this, Detective. But are you sure you got reassigned here? As far as I can remember, no one knows about the additional staff. No one was informed of your transfer,” he bit his lip as he spoke. “I’m sorry again, Detective,” he finished.
Eliana’s eyebrow cocked at that question, causing Officer Friedman to mumble an apology again. Sighing deeply, she remembered that Officer Friedman asked a valid question, and he’s not deserving of her ire. Whoever thought of this transfer was.
“Stop apologizing, Officer. You raised a valid question. You shan’t be afraid to express it,” she said calmly. “To answer your question, yes, I’m sure. I’ve got my re-assignment and transfer paper here in my bag.”
“Oh.”
“But don’t worry, you’re not the only one questioning this transfer,” she huffed. Tapping her fingers to Officer Friedman’s desk, she took the time to look around at the empty station. It really was small. The whole place can fit on the first floor of her old workplace. Shaking her head slightly, she turned her focus towards the officer in front of her. He was looking at his phone – face down on the desk – and was clearly fighting the urge to pick it up. Good. At least he now knows not to play during work hours.
Clearing her throat to break the silence that has settled, she asked the boy, “Is it okay if I wait for Detective Kingston here?” Eliana pointed at the stool in front of Officer Friedman’s desk.
His whole demeanor screams no, but instead he gulped and nodded slowly.
Eliana offered him a small smile in return and mumbled a quick thanks.
She sat down and placed her helmet on the floor beside her, settling in to the stool for she doesn’t know how long she’ll have to wait for the other detective to arrive.
And now, the waiting game for Detective Kingston begins.

Metropolis
09 Jan ’19 – 19:35
The hustle and bustle of Metropolis permeates the vampire's hyper senses as he trudges across the middle of the city. He strolls through the crowd as he huddled himself with the coat he had been wearing since the first time he arrived here. His strides were long and purposeful, looking for the vessel mentioned by the careless agents mingling around with the humans.
For him, it was too good to be true. How can a being so powerful mindlessly roam around the city? Although it doesn't really surprise him, as humans were not really the brightest of the bunch. That vessel carries within them the power to change the power play in this city, nay, the supernatural world, and they don't even know it. The Agency's pets are too weak and too docile to even think about using that power for their own good.
Well at least, he isn't looking blind now. The vampire grins picturing the image of a blonde, freckled woman in his head. She looks mundane, no wonder no one had suspected anything. But he knew it the moment he picked up her scent. It was different, her fragrance is enticing. The woman will be delicious and just thinking about it sent tingles down his spine.
His preparations were complete: go to the woman's apartment, take her back to his hideout, experiment on her, and wait for the results. But what he didn't expect upon arriving on her apartment block, was to see the woman inside her own vehicle, speeding far, far away from the city.
It's all just thanks to his pheromones that he was able to easily gather information from the weak-willed humans that used to live with her that he found out where his vessel is going.
22:10
The word ringing in his ear for quite a few hours now. It was the first time he ever heard about that town, but it's somewhere he would be lurking in no time. Laughing a little to himself, he noticed that he had arrived at his hideout. But the sight in front of him made his blood boil. Agents. Rummaging and snooping around his place. He didn't expect that they will be able to find him that quickly, so with nothing on his back except the clothes he's wearing, the vampire bit back a snarl, escaping seems to be the only way now.
And with a final glance, he turns away from his hideout. Feeling more vicious than he ever had been. These Agency rats will have it soon, he thought to himself. Then he sprints away to somewhere he actually wanted to be.

Wayhaven
10 Jan ’19 – 21:27
The quiet calmness of Dr. Ethan Murphy's small laboratory is broken by the taunting of an intruder as the terrified blood technician hides behind a large counter. The sounds of smashing glass can be heard as beakers and test tubes crash on the linoleum floor. The heaviness of the air presses down on Dr. Murphy as he chokes down a sob.
He sat there on the ground, scared and helpless. All he could to was to put his hands together. And with his eyes closed, he started to pray. But then, a hand suddenly clamps down on his shoulders and the intruder pulls him to his feet. Ethan's eyes bolts open, meeting the intruder's own. The glint of something feral unmistakable in the gaze of their eyes.
The man was almost the same height as him, but standing here in front of Dr. Murphy wearing that sadistic smile, he had never felt so small. The intruder was saying something but nothing is registering in the doctor's frightened mind, all his thoughts focused on running and getting away from the danger in front of him. He was tugging his hand away from the man's tight grasp when suddenly, the intruder gripped it with a force not a normal human can exhibit. The man was cooing at him but he can't even hear his voice over his own crying.
The intruder shushed him, placing a firm finger on his lips and said, "Why don't you relax eh? This will be quick, doctor."
The words echo on in Dr. Murphy's mind as a swathe of calm overtakes him, settling down on him like a comforting blanket that covers his whole being. He almost falls down from the sudden relaxation of his muscles.
The intruder grins widely, one that is covered in malice before he plunges his teeth down the doctor's throat. He sucks the doctor's blood in big gulps. The scene all happened too fast that in the blink of an eye, Dr. Murphy fell into the ground. At last, the intruder laughs, one that is manic and loud as he looks at the unconscious man before him.

At Detective Kingston’s Apartment
Ellara groans as she felt her face slowly getting wet because of the thing that is excitedly licking it. Albeit reluctant, she opened her eyes only to be greeted by the sight of her dog's nose.
"Woof." The dog barks, making her let out yet another groan before she wraps her arms around the small of its body. Stirring from her position, she saw the clock and realized what day it was.
14 Jan ’19 – 05:00
It's so early omg.
But it's not like she could complain. And she is feeling pretty excited about today too. Who wouldn't, when it's the first day that you are officially your town's detective? Ellara chuckles to herself, scrambling to stand on her feet.
She stood in front of her bedroom mirror, carrying Sol with her. She stares at herself, and oh does she look like a disaster. But it doesn't matter. She can do a lot to fix it.
And so with Sol still perched on her arms, she walked to the kitchen starting her morning rituals with breakfast for the both of them as usual.
Everything feels like the usual except from the rapid beating of her heart inside her chest. She doesn't even know if it's excitement, or just her nerves trying to make her reconsider all of this. Well she wouldn't, would she? She dismisses the thought by shaking her head. She proceeds to continue eating as she happily watches her dog eat with the same enthusiasm.
A few spoonfuls and minutes later, she found herself cleaning after their mess. It was quick, as she only ever need to wash a single breakfast set. Maybe I should sleep more.
"Woof!" Sol calls out wagging his tail and getting his owner's attention
The woman's eyes immediately went to him and she gave him a very fond smile. A smile that is a lot more genuine than a lot of her others. She crouches down and pets the pupper, "Wanna go for a walk? What do you say, boy?"
"Woof, woof!"
And that was all it took for her to understand the answer.
After the walk
07:15
"I hope the walk was enough for you, baby." Ellara smiles as she detaches the leash from Sol's collar, letting him run free around the apartment again.
Thankfully, the weather isn't hot, and the walk wasn't that much of a bother. Getting ready for work before walking Sol is probably the best decision she ever made this week. Especially with Tina's message.
Ugh, a murder? As my first case?
Her smile turned into a frown just thinking about it. Wayhaven is a quiet town. And it's the first murder in town ever since she was born. It shouldn't even bother her, but it does anyway. Ellara values all of her firsts, so it's only natural that she's reading too much into this.
Her thought was cut off just as she heard a motorcycle engine start up loudly. And, when did someone own a motorcycle in this street before?
Curious, she quickly pulled her blinds open. Peeking on her window, she saw a figure sitting on a big motorcycle. The person has their back facing her, and with a black helmet on she can't even catch a glimpse of what they look like. The motorcycle zooms away.
It must be her new neighbor. She saw a car parked in front of the apartment yesterday. Unfortunately, she weren't able to meet her new neighbor yet. Oh well, maybe she'll knock later at night just to make sure they're settling in. With a shrug, she closed her blinds once again.
07:30
She looks around her apartment making sure that everything is in order before she grabs a box of dog food from her kitchen. She puts plenty of it on the pet feeder she had managed to assemble. At least now, she won't feel too worried for her dog during work hours.
The dog catches up to her, and follows her closely behind until she stepped outside the door. Sol sits on the floor inside the apartment at a close distance. She crouches on the floor to level with him and smiles.
"Bye, boy. Be good okay? Mommy will be home before you even know it," she says, giving Sol one last kiss before she stood, locked the door, and finally left for work.
At Detective Langford’s Apartment
14 Jan ’19 – 04:15
Eliana had been staring at the ceiling for almost an hour now, her racing thoughts still not calming down. She was woken up by a nightmare earlier, but considering her line of work, it’s not really much of a surprise to her anymore. The things she’d seen in the city marked her, haunted her. But it also made her stronger, fiercer. Things normal people would easily succumb into and feel squeamish about. But still, she persevered. She continued working hard. She continued doing her job well. She continued pushing forward towards her goal – to be the youngest police captain in the history of Metropolis Police Department. And for a while, it seemed like the universe was finally on her side. Her career was advancing according to the time line she had planned for herself. But of course, as it always does, something eventually happens to prove her how wrong she is to think that the universe is on anyone’s side. Just as she was finally getting the hang of being a detective, she was reassigned out of nowhere into some backwater town: Wayhaven. A wrench in her carefully-crafted plan. A wrench in her career.
So that’s how Eliana had found herself staring at the ceiling of her new apartment in Wayhaven, wondering if she was maybe cursed from something she did from her past life. Luna – her pet puppy – was snoring beside her. Her furry companion’s head resting on the crook of her arm. Careful not to jostle her too much, Eliana turned her head towards the clock in her bedside table to look at the time. Knowing that she will not be able to sleep again anytime soon, she fully turned her body towards Luna and cuddled the puppy closer to her chest. Counting down from five to calm her nerves, she inhaled the familiar scent of the puppy and planted a soft kiss in her forehead. Luna turned sleepily towards her and licked Eliana’s nose as a response before going back to sleep again. Chuckling softly, she gently extricated herself from Luna and scratched her ears before sitting up on the side of the bed.
Going to work early is not exactly new for Eliana. So with that in mind, she pushed herself off of the bed and started her morning routine. She changed from wearing her night clothes to her sportswear before she started stretching her limbs to prepare herself for a little rigorous exercise. After a few minutes of exercising, she proceeded to place some dog food on Luna’s bowl, causing the energetic puppy to clamber off of the bed in a hurry to get to her food.
Eliana went to her kitchen to make herself some much needed coffee. Whenever asked, she always say that she prefers her coffee as dark and black as her soul. While waiting for the coffee machine to finish, she sat on the bar stool in the kitchen island and searched the internet for the directions of the police station. Bookmarking it, she prepared all the stuff she needs for work and finished drinking her coffee, which actually counts as her breakfast.
After Luna finished her breakfast, Eliana spent a few more minutes spoiling the little girl with pets before fetching the puppy’s collar and leash. With a smile on her face that only her furry companion ever witnesses, she turned toward Luna and asked, “Who wants to go for a walk?”
“Bork, bork!” Luna exclaimed while wagging her tail enthusiastically, already running towards her human.
God, she loves that puppy, even if she’s not really on good terms with the one who gave Luna to her. Fastening Luna’s leash on, the pair of them went outside to do their usual morning run, but in a different area and surroundings now.
05:30
After an hour of running, Eliana decided to walk around the neighborhood with Luna, just to acquaint herself more with her current residence. The stares of the townspeople as she and her puppy passed was something she expected. After all, she knows that it’s not usual for people to see someone from the city transferring here as she herself is not even sure why she was transferred here. But what else can I do right now except to suck it up?
Taking the other way around towards home, Eliana and Luna walked together at a leisurely pace, knowing that there’s still a long time before she needs to prepare for work.
After the walk
07:00
After arriving home, Eliana rested for a little while before finally taking a shower. Enjoying the hot shower for a few minutes, she turned it off to get dressed and get ready.
Having finally finished dressing-up for work, Eliana stared at herself on her full-body mirror. Her hazel eyes stared back at her, the only memory of her late father that she remembers. Her lean form is hidden beneath her black button-down shirt that was tucked in a tight-fitting black jeans, with her police badge holder clipped on the side of her belt. A simple gold necklace is sitting prettily on the base of her throat partnered by stud earrings of the same color, three on her right ear and two on the left. The black combat boots she’s wearing gives her an extra two inches on her height, but even without the boots, she’s already taller than some of the detectives in the city. A black leather jacket completes her whole look, helping her fight off the chill when she’s riding her motorcycle. She’s about to turn away from the mirror – seemingly satisfied by what she saw – when her eyes zoomed in on the roots of her hair. The light brown color is reappearing again, a reminder that no matter what color of hair dye she chooses and uses – underneath it all and despite everything that has happened – she’s still her mother’s daughter and having that same hair color of hers is an evidence of that.
Making a mental note to buy more hair dye in the town square, she went outside her room and secured Luna’s playpen. She double-checked that the automatic food and water dispenser is working then kissed Luna goodbye. She shouldered her bag and her black helmet and turned to leave.
Not really knowing what to expect (although she thinks that she’ll most likely be bored to death on her first day as a detective in Wayhaven), she took a deep breath and went outside her apartment, locking it behind her.
Eliana went to the parking space where she left her motorcycle. Securing her helmet on and starting the engine, she decided to first try out the coffee shop she saw near the police station as she still has plenty of time to spare. Maybe she’ll stakeout outside the station for a few minutes, just to see how busy and active it could really be, this early in the morning.
Making up her mind, Eliana drove away from the apartment block’s parking space, the roar of the engine of her motorcycle heard by the detective living next door to her’s.
